Catching a MASSIVE Bass While Walleye Fishing the Pueblo Reservoir! (NEW PB!)

I went out to Lake Pueblo State Park a few days back to target walleye & saugeye, & I ended up with the surprise catch of a lifetime! I've been targeting hybrid striped bass (wipers) on & off all this year with no luck until now, & this fish did NOT disappoint! Stay tuned to see how it all happened! 🤙

I've only caught two so far, but I can't wait to get into some more after landing this one & a 24 incher last season. Definitely a great tasting fish though! Even at that size, I'd compare it pretty closely to walleye meat. Just way more of it on one of these big boys!

Nice fish, I'm in Utah and night fish out here.. landed a 15 lb wiper.. the same thing happened to my beast. Long fight, landed him and couldn't revive him, it's to much fish and they tire out after that huge fight...fillet it up and it didn't disappoint. Great catch man.

Nice. 15lbs is a big boi! I didn't know it at the time, but you're one of many people who has told me now that wiper will basically fight until they exhaust themselves to death. I knew something seemed odd because I handled it as carefully as I handle any of my cats & other bass species, but this one just wasn't pulling through. Good to know 👍

Thanks man! That's for sure. I admit I wasn't as educated on wipers as I should have been to be fishing in waters they inhabit, but the only way to land this one on the gear I was using was to fight it to exhaustion, so I'm fairly confident it wouldn't have done well regardless.

It being a species that doesn't reproduce on its own should be more of a reason to be upset😅. Nice fish anyway hopefully the next trophy survives.

Depends how you look at it really. The way I look at it, one fish that can't reproduce represents a single fish, but one that can reproduce represents 1000s of eggs either laid or fertilized every year. Wipers just eat other fish, while other species actually contribute to populations. Thanks though man! I've released plenty of trophy fish, sometimes that's just not how it goes.

Nice not sure when you got that beast but when you get them home filet them and make sure you get all the red off from the skin side once that's done then make a very cut down the center to get the vain out if the center them that is one of the best white flaky meat

Thanks man! I caught it Sunday night & already filleted it & ate some of it. That's basically how I did it though. They have big mud lines, but the meat was definitely delicious once I cleaned it up! 😋

If you still have the measurement and the weight you can submit it to be a Colorado master angler fish and you get like a patch and a certificate I caught a 28 and 1/4 in 10 lb 4 oz wiper out of Pueblo res last year and did not know that it was a master angler fish and did not have the picture of weight so I couldn't do mine

I didn't take any pics of the measurements & didn't weigh it, so idk if they'd accept it or not. I've always thought it was pretty dope that the CPW does the master angler program though. & Nice man, that's a big one! 👍

Unfortunately, I believe the CPW app is a little outdated because I'm pretty sure that old 25inch record has been broken a few times now. I actually have friends who have caught bigger in the same reservoir. Still mega happy with the catch, I'm just not certain it was a record. I wish though! lol
