Lucky bugger, the one in the thumbnail looks like the yumier breed up the NT way. Good ol mullet or lamb head split in two. Cooked chicken frames go well but are unfortunately, also a favourite of snappy in these parts. And a decoy pot made of a float tied to a weight and fish hooks threaded into the rope is great insurance. Place the decoy in the second closest position in your string of pots.

hello Brother, funny how I am doing the exact same thing on the other side of the globe complete with cold beer and a bearded cohort like yours :) we use square pots though.. and fresh bait..either bull lips or chicken necks usually. stay safe and good fishing to you!!
@Hugh-Glass4 жыл бұрын
also, in regards to fresh bait vs. aged bait I was told by an astute old crab fisherman that fresh meat releases oils into the water while the aged stuff has long been stripped of its scent. when something dies its a rush to consumption and (according to his mind) crabs of all sort prefer fresh bait..usually chicken necks which leave an oil sheen when introduced. crab dinner bell, always at dawn. you earned my respect with the statement about putting back what you will not eat. you are a steward of nature and a fine gentleman.

Something to keep in mind when crabbing:- Most people chuck their crabs in a pot o' boiling water when they cook 'em. Just like you would if you were chucked in a vat of boiling hot water, the first thing your crabs do is shit and spew their guts up. If you use stinking rotten shit for bait then that's whats in their guts when you cook 'em. You end up boiling your crabs in a soup of the same rank chook or rotten roo road kill you used for bait. Good luck with that skiddy

I live in Pacific Northwest USA about 200km S of Victoria?Vancouver BC Canada. We Don't have mud crabs like you do in Australia, but we have Dungeness Crabs, I've thrown pots for Dungeness for almost 50 years. My experience has been that stinky bait, like old chicken and other meats no longer fit for consumption are better at attracting crab if the crab population is too sparse where your pot's sitting. On the other hand, if there are lot's of crab around, you'll be more successful with higher fat content fish - Pacific salmon is best. Spiny dogfish ( small 2'-5' shark) chunks work but not as well. I have even known guys who would use canned pet food successfully if they didn't have fish/meat chunks for bait. Just put some small holes in the can with an old fashioned can opener or screwdriver blade. Remember - really stinky bait will draw em in from farther away, really quality seafood scraps seems to be a better attractant if they are close enough to catch the scent.
