You might consider having your canister filter sitting in a plastic tub. If/when the canister leaks, you're going to have a mess on those wooden floors. The outside filter is called a "hang on back" filter (h.o.b for short).

Algae loves blue light. Consider setting it up on a Wi-Fi plug no more than 8 hours a day, maybe less. Frequent water changes will also help keep algae under control.

A small creek and a seine net is a good way to fill a tank and could be another great adventure with the girls. Just be sure to know state laws on net sizes and what you can keep. As far as a name, since the first thing we all think of when we hear green is Googan you could call him Googie.

Did you acclimate the fish to the newer water? Best to put them in a bag, let them sit on top and let the water temp in the bag and tank get the same. Check out some pond feeding pellets to see if it will eat them.

I use the same care for cichlids as sunfish. Ph and gh are different that’s really it. I would use cichlid gold, cucumber slices, and frozen blood worms. At least the tank looks cycled and has live plants plus good size.

Yep, I used a drip to add tank water to the bucket they were in. Once that regulated, put them in the big tank.

The first fish put in your tank is a green gill, that is a mix of a green sunfish and a bluegill. KN fishing smarts is a nice channel to educate yourself and your kid about species of the sunfishes .😊😊😊 I hope I can help

Great fun video. I've kept many different fish in aquariums my whole life. I would suggest maybe adding a small catfish like a channel or bullhead. The green sunfish is less likely to bully it because it doesn't see it as direct competition. A crayfish is cool but will destroy the decor and plants. Plus it has to be big enough that the green sunfish doesn't try to eat it.

Friends of mine had crawdads in thier tanks. One was bright blue. It was pretty cool. Oh yeah, good job getting her hooked on fishing. She's gonna be broke for ever, but at least it'll be for fishing gear, and not less savory stuff. Don't worry, though, you're in good company. I did the same with my youngest boy.

I have around 4 native tanks , if you plan on going with crawfish make sure they have ample hiding space... And are well fed. At their size I'd be less worried about the craw, and more about the fish (especially if you get a decent size)

I tried 2 sunfish at the same time at first, also. Took a couple months to see how much of a jerk one of them was, so I pull him out. 2 or 3 years now and mine gets mostly floating pond pellets and doesn't mind eating off the top. Any leftover worms or minnows is a treat.

That's so cool! One thing I learned with having aquariums is more filtration is better than less. That hang on the back (HOB) filter isn't a bad idea to have along with the canister filter. I had a 75 gallon cichlid tank with two canister filters and a large HOB. Those canister filters had a lot of media for beneficial bacteria to grow on. The media never got cleaned - just the mechanical filter elements. I've heard before if you're feeding fish minnows you want more filtration than usual but I don't have first hand experience. If anyone has anything to add/correct please feel free. It's been a while since I've had an aquarium.

You don’t want minnows or carp species as feeder fish. They have thiaminase, which is an enzyme that blocks the predator from absorbing thiamine. Typically leads to death and neurological problems in the animal whether a fish, turtle, whatever. Convict cichlids are very easy to get reproducing for feeders. Certain livebearer species make great feeders due to their spawn rate.

Awesome vid Debo, couldn’t be more stoked to see a fish tank. Been keeping fish with my father pretty much since I was a toddler. Been keeping mostly cichlids but many people love sunfish. They can become quite personable fish, or a “wet pet” as some aquarist like to say lol. A couple friendly tips of what I do with my own fish. I’d be careful with minnows as many can carry some deadly pathogens. A lot of others are recommending some decent tank mates but in my opinion the green sunfish will most likely not accept others in his territory. From what I’ve heard they will pretty much accept pellets once they learn that you = food. One method that people use is by feeding mealworms or wax worms since they float on the surface. Once the sunfish gets that idea down you can probably drop some cichlid food sticks since the profile looks just like a meal/wax worm on the surface. I’d recommend trying to get him on a cichlid pellet diet since most cichlid pellets are loaded with beneficial vitamins and ingredients and Sunfish and cichlids have very similar wild behaviors. Some of my favorite brands are hikari, north fin, omega one. Very hard to go wrong. I’d try to change 50% percent of the water at a minimum each week. Sunfish produce a lot of waste and are pretty messy fish. Infrequent water changes can lead to some chronic illnesses and deadly Ammonia spikes due to all the waste. Great Vid Debo!! The hang on tank filter is Fluval HoT filter. I have been in the aquarium biz for a long time. Only thing, don't clean the tank and the filters at the same time! Less messing with the tank the better. Your filters are what needs to be kept clean(just the mechanical filters, mostly. After a few months you can clean your bio media in the tank water so it doesn't kill the good bacteria that's breaking down all the poop). It looks like a 40 breeder to me as well. Perfect wide surface area aquarium. Don't overfeed him! If you plan on feeding him that much, make sure you have a good added bacteria, I recommend Stability from Seachem. That could be why your tank is cloudy as it's still going through the nitrogen cycle. Love the new ViDebo collection! I'd name him Greenie! Love the Vid
