I managed to catch a queen on accident. I woke up this morning and saw this huge winged ant crawling in my room. Now, I usually kill insects that get into my room, but your videos gave me a soft spot for ants, so I caught her and I just came back home from releasing her into the wild. She broke her wings off while she was in my container... so I guess future ant generations will tell the story of the gentle giant who led their mother to the promised land? XD

In temperate regions (for example, southern Illinois in the US), you can find newly mated carpenter ant queen ants hiding in rotting/moist pieces of wood at least six in diameter with holes/hollow caverns. They tend to start their colonies in the soft wood in forests, as it is is easy to burrow through and provides quick and easy shelter while their initial brood develop. Once they get more workers, they tend to expand into the surrounding soil, but you can catch really young colonies (2-6 workers) in wood. Smash the wood, and try to carefully shepherd the fleeing ants/queen into a container.

I've just ordered some glass tubes and an ant nest from your site and impatiently waiting your order :) I caught two carpenter ant relates few weeks ago, in Kapuskasing Ontario- Canada and kept them in seperate small Tupperware containers until I get the tubes. One of my ants is apparently a female that did breed because she has at least 8 eggs I've seen so far. I'm so proud of my first small achievement.

Once I caught an GIANT ant, but 8 dunno what it was, but it was strong man, I tried to pick it up and it bit me, so I trapped it, then I hid it in my room, so a month later the container I pit it in was a sea full of ants, I was terrified so I just gave the jar to my friend who loved ants, and he put it in his fish tank, but then, the giant ant died, and my friend gave them food, but after the queen died, ants started planning an escape, since my friend did not know what to do, so he just let them plan, a week later they all escaped, and they were everywhere. But now till this day, I catch ants and give them away for care.

Liam Van Bouwel well if you are a new ant keeper wouldn't you like to see your ants ? also that slow colony growth rate sounds nice because you can get more items for their set up and learn more about caring for the colony before it gets large and takes more ability to manage :)
@Aarantula7 жыл бұрын
...welp. Enjoy your new test tubes. Lucky buster...
@swornsword10837 жыл бұрын
Liam Van Bouwel Well, to be honest my knowledge of ants is limited, but I would assume because they're larger and easier to see, you can feed them more easily and check to see what they're up to easier. Also, they're probably better hunters because of their larger size. Lastly, you can see them easier and enjoy the sight of your colony at work instead of having to search for them throughout their habitat. Just my idea, but you may want to double-check me on that.

I have a huge colony of camponotus ants that has a main nest in a dead fallen tree back in the wood’s, and it has a constant trail for 4 years now in to a satellite nest in the siding of my house. And they often tourment my mom every june because they have their nuptial flight out a crack abover her window sometimes.

Carpenter ants are slow growing ants, and during the first year or two don't have huge population explosions like solenopsis. This means beginners antkeepers can take their time and slowly gain experience keeping! They are also larger ants, so they can't as easily escape and are much easier to view!

Caught 1 Queen 2 weeks ago (still had their wings on), caught second Queen (also with her wings on) kept them for a week to see if they would break their wings off, but no luck. So I let them go, the same day I caught 3 males lol! And no Queens!!! Went to my local Park in New Zealand (South Island, Blenheim) and caught a Queen. And she laid eggs (x20). So I ordered a small nest and will wait until the new workers are born and then transfer them out to their new nest. Can't wait!

As a kid I thought flying ants were a freak occurrence that just happened for no reason every now and then. Remembering back I do remember it did tend to happen around the same time as thunderstorms. It's great to finally understand what the heck is actually happening with flying ants. I had no idea it was so common amongst ant species.

A few weeks ago I saw a bunch of ants laying on the sidewalk. At first I thought it was an ant war but none of them were moving. So I took a stick and dragged it through them (cause that's just what you do) and they all started moving. What was going on?

No? they are pretty tame, so long as you don't jostle their nest, even so they prefer to hide in the nest rather than actively defend it
