I’ve been a Protestant Evangelical pastor for 8 years and was just received into the Catholic Church on Pentecost Sunday 🙌🏼 I’m JUST now learning about virtues and vices and have been wondering why I never heard anything about them in a Protestant context. I wonder if they miss discussions on virtues because of the belief of Sola Fide… from a Protestant perspective, virtues may not need to be discussed since there and no “works” involved in our salvation. I’ll need to sit on this more! This was interesting!

@sirimiridays I understand what people say but just worry because the point is to know God. That's why Jesus says I never knew you, it's really subtle, but you need to know God. For instance in the old testament over and over over God says then they will know that I am the lord. They always knew he was God but God is talking about knowing his ways. And read Jeremiah and Isaiah/Ezekiel, they worshipped the queen of heaven in the past and they said we have not chased after the baals we worship God. In the very end the Rev 13 9 I believe but don't quote me on that, the second beast has two horns like a lamb but speaks lile a dragon. The false church looks like a lamb but speaks like a dragon. As long as you have a relationship with Jesus christ I don't care what you call yourself but make sure you do for many on that day will say lord lord and he will say I never knew you. Not I knew you once, NEVER at all, in fact you're practices of evil. How can that happen? The answer is knowing the lord. A real key is what Jesus says to peter after he asks who peter thinks he is. Was it revealed by Mary who points the way? No it was revealed by the father himself, no one cones to father but through Jesus and no one knows the son but through God himself, God himself is our redeemer not his creation

IMHO, the reason most Catholics don't quote scripture is because the mass and the faith is ALL based on scripture. We don't need to "Proof Text" or existence or defend our faith. Just study the early church fathers and try to disprove the mass step by step. piece by piece. Line by line.

What in the world? "Where do I find exhortations to virtue in the evangelical world?" Go listen to any sermon. Protestants and evangelical communities do a *better* job of instilling virtue into people than we do. Our homilies and our communities are dry and empty (most of the time). Show up, boring homily that doesn't engage, everyone leaves without talking to each other. Do it again next Sunday. Now go to an evangelical community. Everyone does life together, studies the Bible together, prays together, encourages each other to live for Jesus, the sermon is engaging and edifying. As far as Mary being the mother of God, yeah, but that doesn't necessitate Mariology, much less "co redemptrix." There is something to be said for the intellectual side of the Catholic faith and what it can offer in comparison to what Protestantism (practically, not intrinsically) offers. That and the devotion to Mary expressed by apparently holy and wise men, are the only two things this speaker mentions that has substance in regards to choosing Catholicism over against evangelicalism.
@richardounjian9270 Жыл бұрын
If the priest you mentioned is boring, find a more inspiring parish. What, you think all protestant pastors are like Jimmy Swaggart? Fyi, you don't go to Mass to be entertained or to socialize. You go to offer yourself to God, give thanks to God and to receive Jesus in the Eucharist.
@taylorbarrett384 Жыл бұрын
@@richardounjian9270 I've been to thousands of Masses in a hundred parishes all around the country. In that time I've heard only two homilies that were engaging/convicting/helpful. And I spent years living with and studying with and going to Mass with the Dominicans everyday. But virtually everytime I go to any Protestant parish, the sermon is always engaging/helpful. This is a fact of reality that everyone with experience of both sides testifies to. You don't need to tell me what Mass is about. I teach Catholicism professionally. And while we aren't there to be entertained, we certainly are supposed to be engaged, instructed, etc. You can belittle attempts to arouse our emotions, but the most important book in the Old Testament is entirely about expressing our emotions and arousing our emotions to God. And that's part of what hymns, incense, stained glass, gigantic cathedrals, etc, are supposed to do. The fact the Mass is boring is a great tragedy, something we should work to fix, not something we should be defending. And Mass may not be "to socialize" but it certainly is supposed to be a social gathering, a real community event, in which we all come together as family. And that's not what it is now.
@richardounjian9270 Жыл бұрын
@@taylorbarrett384 well, I accept what you say. However, I too travel quite often and I haven't found the same experience. Sure, I have heard poor homilies but, they are the rare exception in my opinion. Dynamic speaking is an art. Unfortunately, I have heard from several sources that priests are told that the average person in the pew has an attention span of about 10 minutes. Keep the homily short. For some who aren't artful speakers this may be good advice. I have a priest at my parish who is a tremendous speaker. He can deliver a half hour homily and you think it only was a minute. The other issue is just time. If you have a string of Masses on a Sunday morning, you have to keep a schedule. As a fellow Catholic I think you would agree that the Mass is more structured than a protestant service. Unless the service has a liturgical nature the sermon is the main event. In those "low church" settings if the preaching is poor that minister won't last long. I believe that artful speaking is a prerequisite for that ministry
@TruthHasSpoken5 ай бұрын
@@taylorbarrett384 All the criticism aside, how do you suggest "fixing" the Mass ? I don't have the same experience as you with the Mass or the experience at Church. And, I would never trade protestant grape juice and crackers - which I can get in my kitchen - for the Resurrected Christ in the Eucharist, a means for receiving his grace, as all Christians received for the first 1500 years.

Mary cooperates in the redemption, as Noah cooperated in the building of the ark, and Moses cooperated in the parting of the Red Sea. God's action, their cooperation! Except with Mary, it's the added mind-blowing mystery of God incarnate taking on the DNA of mother, and becoming one of us in one of the most mysterious and intimate ways possible. We don't know why he chose to involve us at all, but it certainly shows forth the mystery of his love and his plan...

Eve was instrumental in the fall of man. Catholics consider Mary as the new Eve. Thus, Mary through her flesh bore the Christ. Her flesh in Jesus participated in our redemption. Then you have Lk 2: 25-35. 35 being important. As an aside, in traditional Catholic art the Immaculate Heart of Mary is a figure of Mary with her heart aflame pierced by a sword as refrenced in v 35. Hopefully this helps

Not in Evangelical thinking doesn't always mean not in Protestant thinking. You couldn't find these ideas in any of the works by Presbyterian/Reformed, or Anglican, or Wesleyan, or Lutheran thinkers or writers?
@mattswaim8366 Жыл бұрын
For sure, as a Wesleyan, we believed we should progress in virtue, with the aid of grace, toward "entire sanctification," possible in this life. But any discussion of the Virtues proper, and breaking down the elements of how they interact with one another, I had to get from Aquinas and the rest. For sure, Wesley called people to cooperate with grace, avoid sin, an lean on God in the path of Christian perfection, but that conversation about the philosophy of virtue and the components of each virtue was new to me when I discovered the Catholic perspective on it (incidentally, I DID hear about it in philosophy class at.a Wesleyan university, but our interlocutors for those discussions were Aristotle, Augustine and Aquinas). Ultimately, I found that the way the Catholic Church talked about the virtues was completely consistent with how I thought about them in general as a Wesleyan, but it was such a larger and deeper and more complex, and to be honest, exciting conversation that I had ever been able to have in a purely Wesleyan context. I'm sure there have been Wesleyans in the intervening years (my studies in this were in the 90's) who have done more to unpack this conversation, and probably even formally dialogue with Catholics on. I can't speak on behalf of Reformed theology, other than to say that it's a very different kind of Christian anthropology and view of Grace than the Catholic/Wesleyan view, so I can see it being a very different conversation about what is meant by virtue and how the virtues work.

As a Lutheran this demonstrates the poverty of American Christianity more than anything else; thank God the Spirit brought him out of that into a synod that affirms the 'two natures in Christ'. That said, we don't view Thomas Aquinas as of a different tradition; rather that the Lutheran tradition is a continuation of Christ's Church down through time. He's a fallible saint, like Luther and Cyril. Today there is more in English (has taken us a while to translate), yet we often prefer the older works (Bonhoeffer, Gerhard, Luther, St Cyril of Alexandria, the Cappadocian Fathers, etc.). The only difference in virtue ethics that I've seen in the Lutheran tradition is the recognition of spirits driving people in different directions (spirit of wealth, or pride, or whatever). It's not just 'justice' or 'courage' these are influenced by the spirits. In the right order under the Holy Spirit all is good; in an evil order justice is not justice nor is courage courage. (But that's just an application of 'sola fide' so I wouldn't expect that in Roman Catholic circles). (sources are my previous pastors, various literature mostly non-academic, and the laity; sorry I don't have anything specific yet Bonhoeffer's "Life Together" is usually appreciated)

Here is a long reply, but these three paragraphs from the Catechism are needed here. This is how we should all be approaching our separated brethren. 817 In fact, "in this one and only Church of God from its very beginnings there arose certain rifts, which the Apostle strongly censures as damnable. But in subsequent centuries much more serious dissensions appeared and large communities became separated from full communion with the Catholic Church - for which, often enough, men of both sides were to blame." The ruptures that wound the unity of Christ's Body - here we must distinguish heresy, apostasy, and schism - do not occur without human sin: Where there are sins, there are also divisions, schisms, heresies, and disputes. Where there is virtue, however, there also are harmony and unity, from which arise the one heart and one soul of all believers. 818 "However, one cannot charge with the sin of the separation those who at present are born into these communities [that resulted from such separation] and in them are brought up in the faith of Christ, and the Catholic Church accepts them with respect and affection as brothers .... All who have been justified by faith in Baptism are incorporated into Christ; they therefore have a right to be called Christians, and with good reason are accepted as brothers in the Lord by the children of the Catholic Church." 819 "Furthermore, many elements of sanctification and of truth" are found outside the visible confines of the Catholic Church: "the written Word of God; the life of grace; faith, hope, and charity, with the other interior gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as visible elements." Christ's Spirit uses these Churches and ecclesial communities as means of salvation, whose power derives from the fullness of grace and truth that Christ has entrusted to the Catholic Church. All these blessings come from Christ and lead to him, and are in themselves calls to "Catholic unity."

The question is not about those who study. Most of the world is not comprised of philosophy students with enough time, able and willing to think problems through. If you were born Protestant and have no skills or realistic means of correcting the situation and end up as a Baptist, what are we to think about that? Has God abandoned him? In other words, is there a difference between Martin Luther, who has zero excuses on his judgement day and multiple generation Lutherans seeking God? I think the answer is yes. Mary tells us that God has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation. There must be then a Church Invisible along with the visible. Salvation is always through the Church. However a just judge cannot condemn where no choice/gifts are given. That said, anyone with intellectual gifts with full capacity of choice are apparently in grave jeopardy if they do not fully embrace truth of the Church Visible.

The Pagan Catholic Church is full of ideas, but nothing is based on the word of God, just on Pagan traditions, which God strongly condemns. The facts are, that Christianity began in Jerusalem 2000 years ago, Pagnism started long before that, and it flourished in Rome until this very day.

The problem with this argument is that, if you state that paganism entered within the church after the council of Rome, which was the council that defined the canon of the Bible, then you have that a lot of practices and beliefs that protestants criticize nowadays about the church already existed, like the baptism of infants, the hierarchy of the church, some Marian devotions, the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and so go on; and if you state that paganism entered before, you should question the proper authority of the church when it defined the canon of the Bible, and let’s not forget that all the books in the protestant Bible were chosen by the Catholics. Protestants may have removed some books, but they didn’t added none. In other words, you would have to question if the Bible was truly inspired, since supposedly it was a pagan church that defined it’s books.
@benjaminfalzon4622 Жыл бұрын
@@amol_6561 I never heard of the canon of the Bible. I heard about soldiers being used as cannon fodder, but never about the canon of the Bible. The argument is this. Jesus Christ wasn't baptized when he was an infant, Jesus was baptized when he was in his early 30s. The facts are, according to the pagan Catholic church, those who follow the teachings of the Bible are called Protestants, and the ones that follow the Pagan doctrines and Pagan traditions are called Catholics. The reason that the Catholic church is called the Roman Catholic church is that it compromised the teachings of the Bible with the teachings of the Pagan Roman Empire of 2,000 years ago. The Catholic Bible is just like the Jehovah's Witnesses Bible, called the "New World Translation". "NWT". Both the "NWT" and the Catholic Bible have been seriously doctored. The Pagan Catholic Bible has an extra 13 books added to it, which were not inspired by God". The "NWT" doesn't have any extra books as the Pagan Bible does, but the "NWT" added, changed, and deleted many words and letters that were inspired by God. Also, The Catholic church has deleted God's 2nd, commandment concerning idolatry. See for yourself. Compare the Catholic Church's 2nd commandment, with God's 2nd commandment in Deut 5:8-9 This is exactly what the JWs "NWT" does. Also, the Catholic church changed God's Sabbath day, from Saturday to Sunday. Sunday was the day when the Pagan Roman Empire citizens and other Pagans all over the world worshipped the Sun' Read Ezekiel 8:14-16. "KJV". "The Catholic Church still uses an image of a golden sun that the priest holds in his hands during worship during pagan ceremonies". I think you know the image of the golden sun I'm talking about. Correction. It's Called, "Holy Bible." and not the Protestant Bible. The Catholic church had nothing to do with any credible books which were selected for the Bible. That decision was from God. Not the Catholic Church, the only books that the catholic church placed in Its own Bible are the 13 uninspired books. In fact, the catholic church persecuted the Christians who read or even owned a copy of the Bible.

@@srisheo All that the pagan Catholic Church did to the Bible is added an extra 13 uninspired books. The Bible was inspired by God in three different languages. Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. So why does the Pagan Church chants and sing in Latin? Latin was the language of the Pagan Roman Empire. The Catholic Church's doctrines are based on Pagan traditions and Pagan worshipping and not on the teachings of the Bible. The Pagan Church doesn't even have a clue what the Bible is all about.

Ironically, you yourself pointed this out by proof texting Revelation 22:8. Today's meaning of worship is reserved to the Creator alone. Period.
