An Evangelical Seminary Professor Becomes Catholic - Dr. Jason Reed

Dr. Jason Reed's desire to follow Christ led him to pursue academic study in theology and philosophy. He went on teach those disciplines at an Evangelical seminary, in hopes of helping to form pastors in the foundational principles that might best help them share their Christian faith.
Over time, he became increasingly frustrated at the lack of agreement among Protestant Christians on major theological issues, from justification to free will to baptism and beyond. That led him to ask the bigger question: what is the historic Christian faith that has been passed down through the centuries, and how did it become so splintered?

It's very telling that though many Catholics become Protestant and vice versa, every Protestant I've seen who became Catholic was already devout, and as a result of their passion for Christianity discovered the true Church. Every Catholic I've seen who became Protestant was raised Catholic, was poorly catechized, didn't really know what the Church teaches, and then went Protestant and felt like they found Christianity. Essentially, the best Protestants become Catholic, and the most lukewarm Catholics become Protestant.

@@stsplit8973 Take it up with the Jesus you think you are professing, you'll find it to be the same Satan who will bow th knee as you when Jesus returns and settles all bets with the willfully deceived - see, you have a choice, but you prefer your comfort zone in favor of the truth real relationship. What you folks need to do instead of fighting somebody that's trying to save your souls from what you think you're saving, you have no clue because you don't check, you don't check because you don't want to know, and you don't want to know, because you know what you'll find.. A counterfeit. "that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in the heavens and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." [Philippians 2:10-11] There is going to be a certain vein of wrath preserved and set aside for a grand deceiver that is persecuted the Bride of christ, which is the Christian church... which of course historically, would not be catholics, because they openly persecuted the church. I would look under the hood of who you think you're calling God, you need to go look up your own council of Trent the 12th council of Trent, as a matter of fact, and see what Pope Pius arrogantly pronounces about their contrived doctrine of works v. doctrine of grace Biggest problem with Catholics is you don't look under the hood of your own faith... You just want to live the optic of piety, without the reality of righteousness And you have the unmitigated Gall to even think you can shade Christianity - no, not in your worst nightmare. I agree that evangelicals resist the John 6 passage's meaning. Why must we accept Transubstantiation as the way to explain John 6? I'm asking that sincerely. In all these type of testimonies--which I respect--the convert inevitably comes to Mary and effectively takes a leap of faith to embrace the church's teaching on devotion to her. I saw this in Scot Hahn, too. I'd like to hear the same exegetical approach to devotion to Mary that I heard with John 6.

Why do religious people think they need to "earn heaven?" God is our Father. He loves His children. As a father of 4 children, my happiness is directly related to my children's well-being, and so it is with God Himself! Jesus is our Brother and He is all about love, charity, and acceptance. Meanwhile, most Christian religions teach that we need to earn God's love ("accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior" . . .) Stop making God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ human and accept the fact they are divine and none of our human rules work for them! Marian devotion-and devotion to the saints in general-existed in the early Church, as St. Irenaeus affirms in the late second century: For as Eve was seduced by the word of an angel to flee from God, having rebelled against His Word, so Mary by the word of an angel received the glad tidings that she would bear God by obeying his Word. The former was seduced to disobey God, but the latter was persuaded to obey God, so that the Virgin Mary might become the advocate of the virgin Eve. As the human race was subjected to death through [the act of] a virgin, so it was saved through a virgin” (Irenaeus, Against Heresies, V: 19, 1).

You go by Bible Alone. Ok. Where is the list of books that belong in the Bible? It’s not there. So there goes Bible Alone because the Bible doesn’t tell us what Bible even is. So where did that list come from? The Catholic Church discerned that list in 393 AD. So we had a Church spreading the Gospel for 350 years after Christ and BEFORE we had settled the question of the Canon. As to his teenage conversion experience, it is notable that the word "believe" was not used. Yet the way of salvation is presented over & over, perhaps over 100 times as giving faith (trust in the Lord Jesus, in OT trust in YHWH) as the only condition for salvation: What must I do to be saved? Believe on the Lord Jesus & thou shalt be saved, Acts 16. Regardless of the verbiage, if he sincerely trusted Christ as Savior, then He received a transformation & the gift of eternal life with the Lord Jesus. This, of course, requires that one have "Jesus" adequately defined in one's mind. The Lord Jesus is the risen 2nd Person of the Trinity, God become man, not Jesús the Mexican car mechanic or Michael the archangel. If Reed turned to the idolatry of pope-ism, bowing to statues & pretending to sacrifice Christ over & over in the Mass with worshipping bread, deeming it Christ's body, then I disbelieve that he ever actually trusted Christ as Savior & got the transformation from sinful child of Adam to child of God.

From evangelical to Catholic is an unwitting statement of apostasy, since Jesus was an Evangelical Protestant: He evangelized everywhere He went, even to Sheol for three days. A Protestant is defined as someone who "protests" against the teachings of the Catholic Church, so, since it was our Lord Jesus who established the Catholic Church, how could he possibly be protesting against it? “They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they confess not the Eucharist to be the flesh of our Saviour Jesus Christ, which suffered for our sins, and which the Father, of His goodness, raised up again. Those, therefore, who speak against this gift of God, incur death in the midst of their disputes. But it were better for them to treat it with respect, that they also might rise again. It is fitting, therefore, that you should keep aloof from such persons, and not to speak of them either in private or in public, but to give heed to the prophets, and above all, to the Gospel, in which the passion [of Christ] has been revealed to us, and the resurrection has been fully proved. But avoid all divisions, as the beginning of evils.” Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to the Smyrnaeans, Ch. 7, 107 AD “I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? Vs 54, "Whoever eats My flesh, and drinks My blood, has eternal life; and I will raise him up on the last day." Did He say to eat the symbol of His flesh? Vs 55, Jesus said, "For My flesh is meat indeed, and My blood is drink indeed." Vs 56, Jesus said, "He that eats My flesh and drinks My blood dwells in Me, and I in him." Did He say, 'He that eats a symbol of My flesh...'. How can a mere symbol fulfill this promise? Does only a symbol of Christ dwell in us? I thought GOD Himself dwelt within us, 1John 4:12-13. Vs 59, This verse shows that Jesus taught this discourse to all the people. Vs 60,They doubt a third time when many disciples said, "This is a hard saying, who can hear it"? The Jews were instilled by many Old Testament verses, admonishing them not to consume blood. See Deut 12:23, Lev 17:11and 14. They must have thought this was something akin to cannibalism. Is this what you think too? At any point did Jesus back down? Explain to me, if this chapter is symbolic, why did He not explain the symbolism to them? Vs 61, Jesus did not back down, for He said, "Does this offend you?" He knew their thoughts and He certainly knew the Old Testament verses about the consumption of blood. In the next verse, He separated spiritual things from earthly things. 👍👍Vs 63*, Jesus said, "It is the spirit that quickens; the flesh profits nothing. The words I speak to you, they are spirit, and they are life." Did He say He was speaking figuratively or in parables? This is the second verse detractors use to try to "prove" that Jesus spoke figuratively for the whole chapter. Did Jesus say "My" flesh? No, He said "the" flesh. What Jesus had said was, that we cannot accept this mystery if we accept it in too human a way, by having an earthly view of things. Those who can only think of cannibalism, are they not having an earthly view? See John 3:6, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." Verse 63 means that we should not have a carnal human understanding of His words, but a spiritual understanding. In John, chapter 6, Jesus had not only called the 12 Apostles, there was also much larger group of other disciples. Things seemed to be going pretty well. That is until Jesus said “For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.” This was too much for many of his disciples and “From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.” Jesus turns to the 12 and asks, “Will ye also go away? Simon Peter gives the same answer that I find myself saying to those who tell me I should leave the Catholic Church for this reason or that one, “Lord, to whom shall we go?” No matter what a certain priest does, no matter what scandals hit the church, despite whatever corruption or abuse of power might exist, and despite whatever mistakes the Church has made throughout history, “to whom shall we go?” for here is the body and blood of Christ given for a sinner as miserable as I. Matt. 26:26-28; Mark. 14:22,24; Luke 22;19-20; 1 Cor. 11:24-25 - Jesus says, this IS my body and blood. Jesus does not say, this is a symbol of my body and blood. Matt. 26:26; Mark. 14:22; Luke 22:19-20 - the Greek phrase is "Toutoestin to soma mou." This phraseology means "this is actually" or "this is really" my body and blood😉😉

There was a synfonia between Church and State in the Roman Empire--the Church handled spiritual matters, the State secular matters; no Orthodox clergy ever coronated any emporers, therefore when Pope Leo of Rome coronated Charlemagne, he ceased to be Orthodox--that was technically the beginnings of the Catholic Church (sorry, not remembering the source for that one).

@Troll Patrol catholics forget the reformers were catholic and when they left, they took all that is holy and acceptable to God with them. If you insist on accepting all the history and traditions of men, then you have to be Jewish before you are catholic.

@@kiwisaram9373 Unlike Protestants, Orthodox viewed themselves as Catholics and they do validate the sit of Peter (Rome) as first among equals. Asked any Orthodox if they profess the Creed and in that Creed it was stated the Catholic Church as one holy apostolic. You are ignorant of this because you are knee deep in your heresy and lies that was taught by your pastor for more than 500 years (depending who build your church).

One of the hallmarks of heresy is specialization. They take one idea, concept, principle and exalt it until it becomes the guiding light, to the detriment of all others. Over the millennia it has been, to take just a few examples, icons, the Sabbath, faith, works, the Bible, private revelation, Mary, the Saints. All of these are good in themselves as part of a whole. However when they are extracted and promoted as the one foundation, you are talking about heresy. One of the reasons the Catholic Church is catholic is that it doesn't specialize. It digests and reflects on the entire Bible - all Bible verses, faith as well as works, the Saints in the context of the entire family of God, heaven, earth, revelation and history. It is, as you would expect the Church to be: whole, entire and complete, for every nation, people and tongue.

while you mislabel the Sabbath as a _'heresy'_ - a term which you've misused, proving your Bible illiteracy our Creator has labeled It as His day, His Holy day, a _'Delight'_ and for Christians, a *'Commandment'* obviously you aren't wise enough to follow the same God as the One of Creation and Salvation. *Happy Sabbath!!!* It's a Christian thing, you very clearly won't get it.

There were some local Jewish Christian communities in the first century that celebrated the Saturday Sabbath. However following the destruction of Jerusalem, they disappeared.

@@rhwinner _'There were some local Jewish Christian communities....'_ - again, you're just not getting It. Sabbath was established at Creation - Gen 2:2-3 - this is *2,000 years BEFORE* Judah, the first jew. Sabbath was kept by all in the OT who claim God as their Creator and Kind. Sabbath was kept by all in the NT by all who claim Jesus Christ their King. Sabbath is kept by God's church - 1 Tim 3:15 Sabbath is kept by those who know God - 1 John 2:3 Sabbath is kept by those who love Jesus Christ - John 14:15 Sabbath is kept by those who walk in Truth - 1 John 2:4 Sabbath is kept by those who desire Heaven - Rev 22:14 Sabbath will still be being kept by those in Heaven - Isaiah 66:22-23 _'However, following the destruction of Jerusalem, they disappeared.'_ - not for Christians and Christianity, It hasn't. please try to use sense, Sir. you've clearly proven you don't grasp Scripture - but think before posting my friend. *Happy Sabbath!!!* my prayer is that church this morning was a blessing for all who know God, love Christ and walk in Truth! (Christians obviously)
