When the Catholic mass is poorly celebrated, does this correlate with empty pews at the Sunday Mass? The Catholic Church has seen a continuous decline in Church attendance at the Sunday Mass. Why? It a contributing factor poorly celebrated liturgies? What about the Catholic faithful understanding of the Holy sacrifice of the mass? The Catholic mass today continues to see a decrease in attendance. Fr Cristino Bouvette offers some insights into this problem.

This is a special priest! I am thoroughly enjoying these conversations. I have learned that the best way I can enter into the Eucharistic prayer is to bow my head with eyes closed right after the priest makes the sign of the cross over the unconsecrated wine and bread. Then when I return to my Pew after receiving the Eucharist I bow my head once again as Christ enters my body and I proceed to pray some special prayers. That is a great help as opposed to possibly being distracted from the others coming back from communion. I don't know why it took me so long to figure this out but I am grateful that I have. Thank you so much Father and Ken for this podcast🙏🤲💕

This drama about TLM and why this and why that is all fanfare .. we miss out the focus of the mass ... 2 to 3 in faith collect and pray n praise the Lord is how we celebrate mass ... @Rick Downing that is so unkind and unchristian. There is more than a narrow , legalistic view of the Eucharist. This person is sharing her faith - which is incidentally - sacred- between her and God. As your faith is special to you. Have some love and respect. We can learn truth but before that love as you are just being a clanging bell.

Based from my experience as a cradle Catholic...here are some suggestions... Be sure the sound system is clear, not too loud and no echo. Pray to the Holy Spirit to help us focus on the Holy Mass. To forget our earthly life. The Holy Mass is the greatest miracle because spiritually heaven and earth are together. Re educating the people about the Holy Mass what happens SPIRITUALLY.

I find that priests don’t explain or educate people what the mass is truly about. I have learned most of what I know from my own initiative, books, online etc…they need to invite parishioners to come and learn outside of mass times, and truly connect with the parishioners as a community. Many do their job and are just not approachable. That is my experience.

I am a Catholic convert. The pews are empty because the Catholic Church, at least in the US, depends almost exclusively on growing members from the children of other Catholics. Almost everything they talk about is from the point of view of people who have been confirmed in the Church since they were children. The Church does charity work, but they don’t reach out to try to bring others into the faith. Stop spending so much time discussing rubrics. Get out and share the faith with those who are seeking God and hungry for Him. My grandmother was born in 1905 and was raised Methodist. She married. Baptist man and attended a Baptist church. Once, when I was about 12, I heard the Rosary being prayed on the radio. I didn’t know what it was. When I asked my grandmother about what was being said, she explained it to me and told me she had always wanted to be. Catholic. There are many people out here who feel the same way, but they don’t know what steps to take and no one reaches out to them. I even went to a Catholic school for middle school. I wanted to become Catholic then, but no one reached out to me. I went to Confession. I was allowed to just sit at the Mass but I was told I could not go up to receive Communion. I visited a Presbyterian church just before going off to college. A lady sitting by me told me if I wanted to join, to just walk down front. I did and was baptized a month later. In college, I went to hear Pope John Paul I speak in Philadelphia. I never heard anyone speak about God like that before. I finally converted at age 50 because I read and realized I needed to take RCIA classes, but I had to find that out for myself. I am 61 now and very happy that I did. But I would like to see less academic and technical discussions about the Church and the Mass. I’d like to see the Church start focusing on the people’s desire to know God. Too much emphasis is placed on talking about the sacraments in an academic way or on providing for the physical needs of people in terms of charity work. But people like me are out here who would be overjoyed for someone to ask us, heart to heart, to come into the Church. The Mormons reach out all the time. Other churches will see you visiting and ask you right then and there if you want to join. But you can go into a Catholic Church and sit through the whole Mass and leave without anyone saying a word to you. That needs to stop. It’s like a closed system that needs to open. Instead of having these long discussions about the Mass, talk to people and find out where they are in their life. Invite them to church. If you see someone visiting, talk to them before and after services. Yes, Christ instituted the Church. But He instituted it for people. He did not want us to get sidetracked from the main purpose of His coming. He came to bring the Light of salvation to the people. We have the sacraments and many holy things. They are established already. Now let’s concentrate on the people, many of whom have yet to be born but will be seeking God one day. Be there for them.

@@anneherrington8344 I'm sorry to hear that people did not want to share their faith for fear of prejudices. What a shame that Catholics felt that they could only share their faith and experiences with fellow Catholic friends and family. But when I see Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses being bold enough to go door-to-door sharing teachings that are contrary to the true nature of Christ, I can't help but wonder what has happened to the Catholic Church that has caused it to be functioning in some ways like a secret society. The constant talking about the rubrics of the Mass and certain doctrines. But no outreach to people other than charity work. The Catholic Church has so many lapsed Catholics that it's insane. They are not reaching out to people who would receive their message. Trust me, if people will receive the message of the Mormons and the Jehovah''s Witnesses, they will receive the teachings of the true Church. Mormons teach Christ was an angel and Jehovah's Witnesses teach Christ was only a man created specifically to die in the Atonement. Both teachings are contrary to the Scriptures which teach that the Godhead (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) are One. Those who are already within the Church want messages about what's going on in their lives. They don't want an academic lesson on the rubrics of the Mass. This pedantic stuff gets tiresome after a while. That's why some Catholics are flocking to mega "non-denominational" churches. They want more teaching from the Bible and more messages that concern their daily lives rather than a history lesson or a visit to a museum which, sadly, is what some Catholic churches have become. My former neighbor criticized Jehovah's Witnesses for converting her elderly mother by coming to her home, taking her out to lunch, sitting and reading pamphlets with her at home, picking her up to go to Temple, etc. But when my neighbor became elderly herself, the Jehovah's Witnesses came down our street and converted her because she, like her mother, was old, lonely, and wanted to learn about God. The people in the true Church have to rise above these man-made prejudices and do the work that Christ commissioned us to do--love the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), love one another, and tell others the good news of salvation. We can't do that if we file in and file back out of the church like we are in some kind of elementary schoolroom.

I understand what is being said and i agree with Father’s points being made. I’m in my 50’s now and cant remember if i ever attended mass where the priest had his back to the people, but i remember my mother saying that when mass was in Latin the priest faced the Altar. She said there was a real sense of the Church being truly the house of God . There was such reverence and respect. So how did we end up here today like it is now . How have we drifted so far from the true meaning of the mass , who changed the rules of our religion . I believe in God’s true presence in the Tabernacle . I believe in the Consecration. I also believe we come to mass to renew our Faith , to feed our Souls and offer thanks to God for all His blessings and gifts. Yes there can be distractions at mass and whether the priest faces the congregation or the Altar, he or the Altar Servers could potentially become a distraction if they move at all. At the moment i feel very lucky that we have a neighbouring Parish Priest available to celebrate mass in our Parish ( Saturday nights and Tuesdays) . Our Sabbath shifted , it can now be Saturday or Sunday . In my youth,Sunday was always a special day , it was the Sabbath. Then it became diluted as it were, a choice between two days , Saturday or Sunday, either or, which over time for a lot of people , became neither or. I agree too with Father, physically offering each other the Sign of Peace ( hugging , kissing , waving etc during mass) is for me a major time for distraction . A moment of silent prayer may have been more beneficial for everyone, including Ken who might just have got the children under a state of calm and now they are giddy again 😂❤. Ken describes so perfectly what it is like to get a family to mass on time and yes, I can remember, most of mass being taken up with one child’s need or another = distraction for most of mass. God i hope understands that the intention was good and that a good example is being shown to the children and hopefully the Faith will continue to pass on . Thank you Father and Ken , its always good to listen to your discussions and learn from them .

It does make a big difference between the two; I have always gone to a mass where the priest look toward the congregation, the first mass where the priest faced the altar really reinforced what mass was truly about. This may explain some of the confusion about why a large number of congregation do not believe in the real present in the Eucharist. That coming from a poorly educated cradle catholic. I don't know anyone who went through catechism with who are still catholic. Aslo believe that Latin mass brings a treasure of gifts once a person understand the rich purity and how it open up a more universe approach; knowing i can go to mass anywhere in the US or world and have the same rich experience. Ps. I don't know latin but use a cheat sheet and when ever I am exposed to the Latin mass I learning why it's so attractive. Please excusemy grammarthis maybe hard to read. The priests need to connect with people on a higher spiritual level. A priest’s vocation is to lead the people to God. His goal is to go from point A to point B. To get them from this life to heaven. I have yet to see a priest with fire in his belly. Teach them to pray the rosary, say the Devine Mercy prayer, etc. show them how they can love the Eucharist more. Most people are afraid to ask questions about the church or what things about the mass that it represents. Priests knows these things because they went to seminary school. Knowledge is power. Give the people the power of God by leading them to believe and trust in the one true religion.

I would love to receive the Eucharist on the tongue. But I think it’s respectful to others and the priest not to… because of everyone worried about germs… so I genuflect and take communion in the hand. What are your thoughts?

I feel the same. And I don’t think God holds it against us because the Church is allowing it. We can pray the Church changes it back to on the tongue at the rail.

Receiving Jesus on your tongue is the best way. No need to worry about germs. Remember the priest is the only one who washes his hands.

My thoughts are they have done scientific testing on communion in the hand. They have found out that when the communion is given in the hand small particles of Our Lord falls on the floor and people step on our Lord. I am not making this up you probably can Google it you should not take communion in the hand at all .I t should be on the knees and on the tongue

I'm a convert and I can't agree with this at all. The priest is acting in persona Christi, and Jesus did not turn is back on the disciples at the Last Supper, nor did he give instructions to do so. They were gathered around a table, which is exactly how the first Christians celebrated and what the Novus Ordo has given back to us. It would be horrible to have the priest turning his back on us, separating us from our Lord. I love being able to see the bread and the wine being consecrated. Contrary to popular belief, in the Novus Ordo Mass we are all facing the altar, as brothers and sisters, not as a hierarchy with clerics up front and laity behind. The Council fathers got it right, and questioning the working of the Holy Spirit through Vatican II is a pretty risky thing to do. And if any priests think they are so amazing to look at that they are distracting the faithful, perhaps they need to consider whether pride is colouring their appraisal of things. If people are bored at Mass, that is a call for better catechesis, not a call to turn around and speak in a foreign language as though casting magic spells. This is not Hogwarts.

When you consider that the bishop and the priests are responsible for teaching their congregation… each homily is a chance for the priest to explain a teaching of the church including the real presence. So ignorance of the flock is the fault of the teacher. RCIA explains a lot of church practices which cradle Catholics are not taught. So multiple generations of cradle Catholics will only know what a priest tells them in the mass. These days people have Catholic KZbin channels to help catechize themselves in ways people decades ago could not.

Please God plans never allowed again the priest on the mass be in the back. No way please, never again. This is the Banquet, everyone is invited, nobody is better the other even priest. And please, Father , smile.. some people have miserable life, and in the church, in the mass they are seeking , they are needing some friendly and warm people. I understand this is not the subject , but is important nice greetings.

The priest is representing Jesus at Mass. I wonder if at the last supper Jesus would turn around and give his apostles his back. Reverence is more that focusing in the body’s position of the celebrant. The altar is the center of the Sacrificial Mass and the Mass is a celebration it has its moments of joy, repentance, and mission. 🙏
