That's Very Interesting because having been brought up as Catholic in Primary School I was very Strongly Drawn into Atheism in Catholic Secondary School at the age of 12-13 years old. !!! Who Knew???

Catholicism has been a way for Italian kids to rise to the top, in the Catholic schooling system. Not by merit, by convenience. The Italians were the hegemonic force at the time frame in history.

+The Multiculturalist There was an episode 4, it was Benjamin, an ex Jehovah Witness, a sad story. Not sure why it isn't on this series of clips,??

What a horrible story! This woman was forced to get a top-notch education that placed value on human life at every stage (including within the womb) and made to feel included into a community that cared about her well-being. And she was mercilessly shown how people care for others around the world. How DARE they! She's lucky she got out of this diabolical, twisted scheme! I'm surprised no one has bought the book rights to her brave story...

I grew up in a Catholic Family and I went to a Catholic School, and I also was very Catholic... And, yes, I can say that, except a bunch of fanatics, Catholicism and Catholics are very very different whrn in comes to leaving religion, as long as nobody will stop talking to you and you won´t be considered an apostate nor any strange thing. In that aspect, I can say that Catholicism is way more permisive and easy going than any other religion, because if you stop believing in God is not a big deal for anybody and you won´t have to pass through those things that manyother people from many other religions have to pass trough. And, yes, it is also true that many people are doing very good things thanks to their faith and that many christian values are good. However, at the end of the day, Catholicism is like any other religion, you have to follow some God´s plan, and you have to please God over and over again, you have to follow God rules and you have to fear God... You have to live for God, not for yourself, and if you draw away from God´s Plan you just have to confess your sins to avoid the eternal punishment... Catholics won´t kill you nor will stop talking to you or leave you alone if you decide to leave religion, but Catholicism shows God as any other religion: a being you should please and fear, and who has a plan for you, so everything that happens to you is because God wanted to and you should accept it without questioning it. Growing up in a Catholic environment made me realize that the main problem with Catholicism is hypocrisy. The Catholic Church is hypocritical, catholics are hypocriticals, and God is hypocritical. The Catholic Church is hypocritical because it´s full of all those material things that they say we can´t have, catholics are hypocriticals because they only follow their religion the way they want to, and if they do something wrong, they just confess their sins but with no contrition at all, and God is hypocritical because he supposedly love us and wants the best for us, but then we have to constantly be pleasing him and fearing him, and we can´t even blame him for the bad things... I´m no longer a Catholic because I don´t want to be hypocritical. Catholicism won´t make you struggle and suffer (in general) as much as any other religion, but it will make you a sheep and if you are too in, you will just be another prisioner of a supposedly loving God... We can´t compare leaving Islam with leaving Catholicism (and, in general, Christianism), but at the end of the day, this religion can be as awful as any other. I was too in that I never ever questioned things, and is not easy to start questioning things after decades of indoctrination. Leaving this religion doesn´t cause you troubles with the rest of the community, but it also makes you fight against yourself and against your own identity.

@capone70 How would the story be different for you if she was indoctrinated into Islam instead? She wasn't educated about religions (helpful) she was heavily indoctrinated into a single one (abusive - using government funds). And the value your god places on the life of the unborn? Precisely zero. See Leviticus 27:1-7. The bible says nothing specifically against abortion, and has passages overtly supporting and even demanding the killing of the unborn. The holier-than-thou stance of Catholics is beyond the pale.

this does not make sense. You were raised in a society that puts value into your existence, but end up rejecting it? are we just massive groups of cells with not mental capacity to see the purpose of our existence? what is the purpose of our life? what is the purpose of this grand design? is our existence a mistake? why is there a deep need to have someone else believe something as if what we have realized is a product of our own thinking? are we not programmed to think? if then, do we really have the free will to think?
