Julia talks about how deeply Christian she was, and how leaving it created huge effects on her mental health, including thinking her homelessness was due to her going dancing!

I knew a woman who said that she had been driving to visit a friend but suddenly realized she was on the wrong street. She said, "Hmmm, I wonder why God wanted me to turn down this street." Very much like what you talked about! It really does get that crazy!

Thank you for sharing and your sense of humour is brilliant I wonder if we could wave a magic wand and get rid of religion how much the mental health of people would improve. I have said the same to Emma I am a former JW and as I listened to you I was nodding thinking yes I recognise that perhaps not as extreme as you but the pattern seems to permeate most religions

It's hilarious how Christians will bare their teeth and sharpen their claws if you even hint at keeping the Torah JUST LIKE JESUS DID, they'll scream at you "GRACE!!!! We are saved by GRACE through FAITH!!" But then talk to any of them and, if they're honest (oh woeful Christian who's not!) they'll tell you that they are struggling to be good enough, to be a better Christian. I was one for over 30 years--I know that drill. And they'll tell you you're sick or poor or your baby died because you don't have enough faith. If that's not WORKS RIGHTEOUSNESS, what is????

You’ve never heard of Messianic Jews? Or “Living Levitically - One church’s audacious experiment in being perfect.” Never mind that. While generational punishments are mentioned in the Bible, it’s not exactly Biblical to say your baby died because you weren’t good enough. What is biblical, though, is that God is close to the broken hearted!

You're right I was a Christian for 45 years. They say "We are saved by grace and salvation is free." But you have to "Believe" well that's works right there. You have to do (believe) to get (salvation).

Childhood indoctrination is the only reason religion still exists. It always breaks me watching people struggle with the logical conclusion of God not existing while being so emotionally attached to him.

I knew lots of people who would insist that all you had to do to hear a personal message from god was to open the bible and land on a passage and read it. That's it. That was his message. As you can imagine, the results were sometimes hilarious. Totally random.

You are living in a prosperous country moving to enlightenment with science like Eqypt was when it was building pyramids and Greeks had their great Philosophies ... before Christians and Muslims made them feel ashamed of themselves for everything and then if you convince yourself you are going to dogs your plight is same as it is today in Mid-east or Greek economy.

Ok, but must Muslims live in south East Asia, and that’s ignoring the fact that the ‘Mid east’ (don’t forget this is a term virtually invented by Americans) has some good economies.

By the way, just because someone in the church does something bad to you it doesn't mean God or Jesus doesn't exist. We have to be really careful not to decide our fate and rightstanding with God because of other people. What this woman went through was horrible, but certainly no grounds to reject God. If we do wrong then own up to it, and if we were wrong own them up to it, not God

Yes I think there’s underlying unresolved mental issues with these people. I think their situation is more their fault and not God’s.

@@emmaswain3084 well in terms of the mental aspect I suffered from bad scrupulously. It got so bad that I started slowly not being able to distinguish my own reality vs what was actually happening in a situation (part of scrupulously is seeing sin where there is none, so this led me to seeing real-life situations not as they actually were). One time it even led to me calling the police. What really helped me to begin working towards resolving my situation was coming to a better understanding of God’s mercy (thanks to Saint Faustina). I don’t know these peoples’ lives but, I can relate to them a little bit. I just know my mental situation was my fault because I was viewing God from an incorrect perspective and I have a feeling it’s the same with them. As for the child part, idk. My first thoughts are “Human beings are sinful, we live in a fallen world” or “God is so merciful that he’s giving the sexual abuser time to repent instead of striking him dead”. However I’m sure if my child was sexually abused I’d be singing a different tune. I don’t understand how God works but, I understand enough to know that God exists.

No matter what the church denomination their churches are filled with people and people make mistakes. The main thing is what churches' fundamental doctrine on how to be saved most closely resembles that of the first century church written in the book of Acts ? When we concentrate on individual believers excesses and mistakes we take our eyes off the Lord and isolate our self from an important source of spiritual strength and that is worshipping with other children of God.

No offence but I get the impression that this lady is blaming religion for what appears to be a preexisting mental health condition. She presents as erratic and all over the place. I get that she is blaming religion for that but the way she has interpreted Christianity is a little bit wacky ... and suspect her interpretation of God and religion only exacerbated her mental health problems .... & Yet again LEGALISM LEGALISM LEGALISM

We are the body of Christ on earth. Instead of teaching people with abusive parents to chant random phrases, we should be minimising the situations that lead to abuse in society, promoting temperance, and treating the mentally ill as well as encouraging mental health care.
