What people need to keep in mind is that individual JWs are still people. The problem is that the org, and more specifically the Governing Body, is exploiting and manipulating them to keep them subservient. They are repeatedly bombarded with inflammatory propaganda, fear mongering, dogmatism, gaslighting, supremacism, and misanthropic disgust to make them into mindless soldiers. They are indoctrinated to view anything, even human life or wellbeing, as worthless if it doesn’t benefit the group in some way. It’s unhealthy, dehumanizing, inhumane, and incredibly dangerous. These people need help and guidance. Most people that dragged into cults tend to be either impressionable or emotionally vulnerable.

Another thing to consider is that cults usually aren’t black-hooded figures sacrificing people in a forest. Most modern cults are actually very welcoming , presentable, and manipulative, and they have to be in order to survive in the modern age. They prey on impressionable children as well as emotionally vulnerable or traumatic adults to exploit. Steven Hassan’s BITE Model is a great tool for identifying cults, both audacious and subversive. My advice? Do as much research as possible and analyze other perspectives to get a wider view of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Both from JW itself, former JWs, articles, records, etc. Even if not all of them are factual, you’ll at least have a general understanding of the org and it’s history. Don’t let people drag you into an biased echo chamber.

I still consider myself "nice" as an Ex-JW, but I wouldn't advise Anyone to get involved in what I now know is a Dangerous and Narcissistic Religious Cult. Only Harm can come from being involved with it. I suffered personal harm and still do to this day thirty yrs later. With JWs ,as with all people; You have Narcissists that appear on the surface as being friendly, caring people, who truly are not; and, You have Empaths that truly have the best intentions and are actually loving, yet are misguided and indoctrinated with incorrect information and codependency towards a Narcissistic group of Leaders. Children against parents, parents against authority, authority against God. The JWs are one of the only religion that actually have structures in place to discipline and maintain order. To the point of disfellowshiping a person from the org. Anytime you have these type of measures in place there bound to be resentment and disgruntled individuals. How many religions will Disfellowship you for unclean habits as smoking, drug abuse, premarital sex, adultery. The list goes on. Always keep in mind that the JWs NEVER study the Bible. They study Watchtower publications exclusively. They CLAIM to study the Bible and they offer to study the Bible with others. But they, in my experience, ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to study the Bible with others. They will go to their publications first, last, and foremost. Many years ago I and my then wife studied off and on with JWs over a period of about 10 years. Not one session passed without me being able to refute what they were teaching from their literature by referring only to the Bible. Yes, their literature is randomly peppered with quotes from and references to the Bible but, all too often, the quotes and references are either misquoted, misinterpreted, or taken out of context. They demand you take a critical look at your beliefs but refuse to take a critical look at their own. When one points out an obvious Watchtower error they will invariably point not to the Bible, but to their own literature to refute the Bible saying: "I appreciate (they like that word 'appreciate" a lot) what you are saying, but . . ." And yes, they do prey on the vulnerable. Best thing to do when confronted by JWs is to send them packing. Be nice. But send them packing.

The average rank & file either doesn't know about it or won't dare getting into that kind of convo. And given that child abuse is a topic that any person with some humanity would feel strong about, it would be probably easier to argue against the JW on such a topic than anything else. When I say 'easier' I mean if it were me, I would find it easier to take a strong stand against a JW on a topic like the WT's handling of child abuse, or even on blood, because they are such black & white topics. As a result, my position would be an absolute & firm "no way you can convince me either it's acceptable". I agree with Lloyd’s assessment that JWs act like vultures. My mother and did their Bible studies for years. We were both vulnerable because we were both very depressed, and like Lloyd said I’m sure they picked up on this. They didn’t want to baptize either one of us because our best wasn’t good enough, and of course that was an absolute blessing. My mom was already not active due to illness when I told them I wanted nothing to do with them. I deliver mail, and several JWs are on my route. They’ve tried to preach to me in the past, while I delivered their mail. Telling me not to leave jehovah. 🙄 Being at work can make you a captive audience. At first I could counter with bravado telling them how happy I was not to be with the organization but my mother’s health has since further declined so it’s very difficult to utilize such bravado. Come to think of it, I probably am giving off vulnerable vibes as someone else on my route tried to get me to go to their Mosque, just today! I feel resolute in my return to my beliefs in Sanatana Dharma, but I feel if I indeed have such a vibe it has more to do with coping with my mother’s poor health than any theoretical crisis of faith. I once “unwitnessed” to one PIMI right after they tried to witness to me. They said they’d pray for me and I didn’t see them for a while. That worked fine for me. It’s a horrible feeling to be a captive audience. Especially when the “performer” has a proclivity of taking advantage of someone in a family crisis. And I find it very insulting that JWs and others consider me a soft target for their institutions. To be clear I’d never consider going back to JW for anything. Lloyd’s videos and other sources did a fantastic job exposing the organization’s horrible flaws. Watch the four corners documentary for a great presentation.

Love bombing becomes rejection bombing when you let down your possessive lover. So too members of high-control groups such as JWs switch on the love bombing at will and just as easily switch it over to rejection bombing when you don’t fully comply with their view of how you should be.

In January 2020 two JW elders visited me . I raised the issue of CSA and they referred me to a WT article that purported to demonstrate that there are measures in place which protect children. I promised to read it and discuss it with them on a follow-up visit but only on condition that they looked into case 29 at the ARC, especially Jackson's testimony and we woud allocate an equal amount of discussion time to both topics. A sure fire way to stop their persistence?

Hazel, Cults have outsider doctrine and insider doctrine. When JWs talk to other people, they will present the outsider doctrine. Much of what is discussed on channels like this is insider doctrine that JWs know is more controversial and only introduce little by little, over the course of months and years. When a cult is recruiting someone, they are going to be very nice and very friendly. And they oftentimes might be that way sincerely, often the recruiter is an indoctrinated victim of the cult themselves. Cults lovebomb prospective members. Of course, once the person is through the long indoctrination process and committed and cannot walk away without punishment, then that is when much of that friendliness goes away. It is then time to perform and work. By then, raise the wrong question, break the wrong rule and in an instant, you are treated like public enemy #1. Rather than look at the entry level cult propaganda they are sharing--look for the study propaganda targeted to members. It can even be found on their online library if you did. Study it backwards. Rather than start with basic agreeable sounding stuff, start with: if I needed a blood transfusion to save my life, would I refuse and die? If my family member or friend were a JW and was disfellowshipped, would I shun them? Do I believe that Jesus invisibly appointed the Governing Body in the year 1919 as his Faithful Slave and then chose the Watchtower religion as the one true religion? Do you believe that if you do not actively witness to non-JWs that you have blood on your hands and will die at Armageddon? Do you really believe you need to fill out a timesheet to your witnessing activity every month? Would you believe that merely 10 hours a month might not be enough witnessing, but you need to simplify your life to do more, becoming a pioneer and doing this for 70 hours a month--and if you don't, you aren't giving God your "best"? I've never been Catholic, but I do believe being an open-minded Catholic is healthier than getting involved in a cult. I do know there are problems historically and currently as with many groups, but as a denomination, they do accept science, including evolution. Catholic scholars do approach the Bible with an approach of higher criticism. Or perhaps you can find an open-minded spirituality apart from it if that is your choice. But whatever you do, research any group that is actively trying to recruit you.

Yes, modest dress and sincerity along with slick marketing can easily sway the naive, uninformed and even educated folks. ‘Studying with these true believers will lead you into a world of logical fallacies, loaded language, peer pressure and 140 years of doctrinal refinement that is presented with high tech videos designed to pull on the emotions. The Watchtower has long presented their belief system in a monologic discursive presentation that has traditionally been used by educators to teach the math and sciences . Social Sciences including Religion should be presented using a Dialogical approach. This is an arena to express feelings, ideas, views and perspectives. The Watchtower presents faith based ideas and conjecture as ‘Truths’ using Monological language which is less likely to be challenged. For example: “when Jesus became king in 1914”. Speculation presented as fact. The public talks and literature are rife with this language.

In my home area in Germany Catholicism is predominantly a cultural thing. Most people are Catholic, believe the main points, but don’t really do anything about it outside of annual events and special life events (baptisms, first communions, confirmations, weddings, funerals). It’s 90% tradition-based membership. About 10% go to mass weekly or more often. When I was a teenager, the witnesses tried my little Catholic village and came across me, home alone. I wasn’t your typical Catholic though. I was an altar server group leader, a lector (I read scripture during mass), and a confirmation teacher (I taught candidates for confirmation, which is equivalent to teaching candidates for baptism in believer’s baptism religions. Having said that, they naturally thought I was an easy target. They left when one of them started agreeing with me and never came back.

Same in America (though we do have higher rates of church attendance than in Europe), we call them Cultural Catholics, Cafeteria Catholics (they pick and choose which parts they observe), and C & E Catholics (show up only for Christmas and Easter time). In America Catholics get offended if you 'switch teams' to a different religion but could not care less if you're apathetic, unbelieving, and non-participatory because at this point it's more of a traditional background inheritance more than some living belief system.

That is the scenario this caller's story reminds me of and her customers infuriate me. What they're doing is not nice. They're not "such nice people". They approach her at work because they know she'll be there and they know she can't walk out because she has to work. This caller should be angry. I think this caller should get counseling because she's really vulnerable. It sounds to me as though the Witnesses have used a common tactic used by a lot of religions. They convince people that there is something wrong. And then they offer them the solution which is to join their religion. It's classic.

Catholicism in 2021 is significantly different from even a few decades ago… in the 1970s-80s the Catholic Church was exclusive and condescending in its outlook, and asserted that salvation was a only available within the Church (Roman). To borrow a Hitchens reference, Catholicism now presents as a ‘smiley-faced’ and accepting religion however for most of its history (including within living memory) it has been very intolerant of non-Catholics. I’d say to this caller that introspection should include looking into the history of Catholicism warts and all, including recent history, to understand what sort of religion you’re accepting. I’m a older lapsed Catholic and as a child I was a taught plenty of harmful nonsense by teachers and priests. Things have improved somewhat but there are still very questionable Catholic teachings when it comes to issues like homosexuality… I think further reform is needed.

''Things have improved somewhat but there are still very questionable Catholic teachings when it comes to issues like homosexuality'' I dont think that there is any christian church that accepts homosexuality. I have met people who were openly gay but also thought themselves as very faithful, going to the church regularly etc. Nobody turns them away but if they tried to debate it with a priest they would fall on a dogmatic wall.

I certainly think its wrong when the JWs go into public businesses and start proselytizing to people. Thank goodness my mother has never done that. I never did. I wouldn't have wanted someone to lose their job. The employees are there to work, they aren't being paid to talk about religion with what may be total strangers to them. I feel sorry for Hazel. She probably still feels some affinity for the Roman Catholic Church despite her doubts. The Catholic Church was one of the various religious groups I was involved with at different times when I left the JWs. I have some very devout Catholic relatives. Roman Catholicism certainly has its share of problems, just like the JWs have theirs. No doubt, the JWs that Hazel may work with or serve as part of her job working at a grocery store are probably very nice people. But, just because they're nice people, that doesn't mean that their theological claims are true or that their religious practices and doctrines are beneficial or harmless. Let's say a Jehovah's Witness, for example, a white American Jehovah's Witness, in particular, meets their new next door neighbor who is also white and seems like the sweetest, most likeable, generous, hardworking, kind, caring person in the world. The JW then learns that the neighbor is a devoted member of the Ku Klux Klan -- does that then mean that the JW should think that there must be something to the Klan's white supremacist ideology just because this particular member seems like such a wonderful, nice person? I'm not comparing the JWs to the Klan, I'm just using this imagined scenario as an example.

I do hope that if she is able to, Hazel might be able to talk with a mental health professional if that is an option for her. I do think she should think more about her beliefs, I agree with Lloyd on that, she doesn't sound like she totally buys into the doctrines of the Catholic faith. If Hazel were to visit the local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses near her home, at the meeting for worship that she would attend, she would be love-bombed by the members there and would be encouraged to return for other meetings; then she would eventually be encouraged to start having Bible study sessions with the other members of the congregation who would hope this will lead her to eventually becoming baptized as a Witness. Trust me on this much, Hazel, if you're having a problem with Catholic doctrine, you probably wouldn't find dealing with religious doubts as a Jehovah's Witness any easier. When you're a Witness, you greatly risk losing nearly everything you have when you start doubting the faith and come to the conclusion that you no longer believe in the Watchtower Society's teachings I do think you should polite tell the JWs you know that you feel it inappropriate to discuss religion when you're working at your paying job away from home. As well-meaning as those Witnesses may be, they are attempting to prey on a vulnerable person and that is entirely wrong. Hazel certainly wouldn't immediately learn about some of the darker and controversial aspects of JW culture, doctrine or practices, nor would she automatically be told what consequences she would face from the Witness community if she were to join and then question the faith. No matter what the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society says, the ends do not justify the means. It is simply far too easy to get hurt by the JW faith, and I don't want to see that happen to Hazel or to any other vulnerable person.

Good suggestion for her to sit and write down the questions that she would like most answered. No doubt she wants to remain a believer and she is very curious to investigate the JWs teaching more because of their attention and demeanor and despite her online research. So to get the curiosity out of her system, I say take them up on a zoom bible study with her questions already prepared. Once she gets them out of her system, possibly look up a bible study group with no affiliation to a religious institution and see if she gets answers from there. When it is all done, she might well see that she is fine on her own and ready to go in a completely different direction.

He wasn't following directions. When preaching in business territory you ALL WAYS i mean ALL WAYS go to the management first to get permission to leave literature if they say no, you leave, if they say yes you do it but don't over do it. They may change their minds. Not everyone is going to follow directions. That hurts others who are following the right directions
