There may be some shortcomings with the 4680 but "fail" seems hyperbolic.

Do Panasonic and the other 4680 producers have customers for them other than Tesla?

It's unclear, but they'd be able to sell them. These aren't the same as the tabless design Tesla has.

@ well we’re all looking forward to seeing you at both events. These are the only two events I can make this year. I’ve got three Scottish events to attend those events I’m used to. That’s why I have a 10 x 10 tent. Don’t worry about dinner invitation for me, my buddy and his wife got the neighbor to invite me over for barbecue Friday nightbarbecue in Tennessee Brian, if you really nice to me, I’ll bring you back a doggy bag😂😂😂

9:16 I'm not that guy, but should I bring my banjo? No I don't play, everyone in Alabama who knows a Susannah is issued a banjo if they show a need. I actually got mine because I developed a dependency for the sound after watching the indie film: "The History of Future Folk". "I See Stars" is a compelling piece of music, at least when compared to "Space Worms". And you haven't heard banjo if you haven't seen the torture scene about 15 minutes into the movie; O Futana never sounded better.

I think BMW or Mercedes or one of the other car assemblers was planning to use 4695 or other longer 46mm diameter batteries. I suppose those could be what Samsung calls 46 series batteries.

@@FutureAzA Cool. thanks. unexpected. I still have a nagging half-memory that there were reports in the (online) media that were repeated here on YT that one of the big old car brands would be using 46xx batteries that were taller than the 4680s, and that the batteries would be produced by one of the major non-chinese battery building companies ... doesn't make it so that I think I may remember part of a thing.
@ziploc20002 күн бұрын
I hope 4680 succeeds, imagine halving the battery weight and volume while doubling the capacity, in any existing EV. You more than double the range because less weight makes for greater energy efficiency moving that weight about. The battery is also the major cost factor in EVs, so cutting the battery cost massively cuts the price of EVs. Fewer cells also lowers the possibility of a cell overheating and starting a runaway thermal fire, making EVs, already the least fire-prone type of vehicle, even safer.
@twostate78222 күн бұрын
4680 batteries were announced over 4 years ago. Even back then, they were a marginal improvement over the 2170 batteries of the time. Tesla misleadingly claimed they had 5x the capacity of the older 2170 batteries, but that was basically because they are 5x as big, 5x as heavy, with maybe a 10-15% increase in actual energy density. It's taken Tesla 4 years to get 4680 batteries to ramp up to actual mass production, and even after 4 years, they still can't make them efficiently enough to replace other battery types. In the meantime, other battery makers have been producing much more technically advanced batteries, while Tesla has wasted 4 years trying to get their battery lines operational for the 4680.
@theGnessКүн бұрын
Drew Baglino stated multiple times (and Elon, I think, at least once) that the 4680 improvements outlined at Battery Day were targeted to be realized by 2026. They have undeniably faced setbacks in the program, particularly with the dry electrode processes, but until 2026 arrives any claims that the program has failed or didn't live up to what was promised are either ill-informed or ill-intentioned
@twostate7822Күн бұрын
@@theGness Oh, so Drew and Elon are using the Toyota solid state battery calendar. Got it. 😂 BTW, if Elon really didn't think the 4680's would be in mass production until 2026, why did he only hype a 10-15% improvement in energy density??? There are have been constant reports that Elon was not happy over delays in the 4680 mass production lines.
@pauld3327Күн бұрын
Agree. The claims made on 'Battery day' were very misleading.
@garethrobinson2275Күн бұрын
It ain't done yet. 4680 is about hyper-production, it stands or falls by that. In essence I think they started it because they thought there would be a huge bottleneck in battery supply. What actually happened is kind of the opposite with manufacturers pulling back from predicted EV production and a glut of battery capacity. Nevertheless the 4680 dream may still become a reality in the coming years.

Thanks. What Brian missed this time is a detailed discussion of Zeng's criticism. Instead, we got a list of companies willing to produce the batteries if Tesla is willing to buy them.
