How to fix P0706 Code: Transmission Range Sensor “A” Circuit Range/Performance
The Transmission Range Sensor tells the computer (TCM/PCM) whether the gear selector is in Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, or Low.
A P0706 Code is set when the computer sees an issue with the signal from the Range Sensor.
Depending on the vehicle manufacturer, the Transmission Range Sensor is also called a Neutral Safety Switch.
Possible Causes of a P0706 Code:
Bad Transmission Range Sensor (Neutral Safety Switch)
Wiring (Open/Short)
Transmission Issues (Valve Body, Lead Frame)
Bad Computer (TCM/PCM)

that was a very helpful video! so I accidentally spilled soda in my '09 Optima's gear selector. I superficially cleaned it, but a few weeks later, my check engine light came on, and it reads this same code. do you think it could be the reason?

I used backprobe and in Park or Neutral there is voltage (B+). In other positions its ground potential. So this means one of the module is bad. Could also be the IPDM module, HYbrid control module (it’s a hybrid infinity) or defective TCM

Yes you can drive it but it can make the car go into limp mode. And it can cause more damage . Buy the part off rockauto and install yourself . Very easy to fix
