For sure enjoy these. The remittance man is an oft-overlooked part of the history of western Canada and the US both. Up to and including many who theorize the Mad Trapper of Rat River was a remittance man that turned to violence. Used to hear references to the odd one around here in northern MT, typically they were viewed cautiously or from a distance and most of the stories the old folks tell revolved around them being odd or awkward and usually playboys. Taking a native wife occasionally or having a string of girls to help them spend some dough, but never making much of their actual farmstead. Love these stories, please keep 'em up.

We had a similar breed down here in the antipodes. Around the same time your story was set, one of our local delinquent gentlemen was libeled by a colonial newspaper. He sued, and the judge found in his favour. Such was the value of his reputation, the magistrate awarded him a ha penny in damages.

there's the real life of "lord" darrell duppa , an English adventurer, who supposedly received some kind of family remittance from Great Britain (he always had money but didn't work or have a profession) ... he was shipwrecked in south america and made his way to the "wild west"... he's credited with naming many of the famous geological features and cities (notably the city of Phoenix, where his home is still located )... he rode with most of the famous arizona "wild west" legends and was friends with the King Woolsey and Jack Swilling... the best story that i was told by old timers about him was how he held off an apache raid on his ranch... they wanted a shipment of whisky which he had but he was able to hold them at bay until he drank the entire shipment and at which point the apaches realized their raid was worthless to continue... (edit... i'm always amazed that a movie hasn't been made about him... he was an amazing character)
