This is why Star Trek was & is STILL great! It tackles real issues from then and takes us 20-40 years to realize it was more than just entertainment. Just like the Law and Order shows. And we haven't learned much since then.

Sure we have. There hasn't been institutionalized racism in the USA for half a century. We had a 2-term black president 3 administrations ago. And we have an Indian-Jamacan Woman as VP. What are you talking about? The UK just had its first PM of color!

@@geovaughan8261 Yep. We did indeed. That's why institutionalized racism was eliminated by the Greatest Generation who were in power at the time. It took the boomers to undo all that during their tenure over the past 30 years.

Your naive look on things is cute, but also dangerous and dishonest. if you think having a few persons of colours in high position s means institutional racism is gone you are quite mistaken. Racial profiling, people in power literally still wishing they could linch people(the recent Oklahoma tapes), property rights which still negatively affect the black community, disproportionatel incarceration rates, I could go on and on. Yes it has improved, but we still have a long long way to go.

They ALWAYS criticized this episode for being TOO moralistic or TOO heavy handed. I actually liked it in terms of the times and what technologies were available to the TV series. I think TNG blew it because they were STILL alive at the time SO they could've revisited the story and cleaned up some loose ends.
@SantomPh

In a novel No Time Like the Past where Seven of Nine meets Kirk and ends up on Cheron with him, she says that in Voyager's time the Federation avoids the planet because of those two still fighting their war (they are literally the last two left). As the planet no longer has warp capable ships or interstellar communication, they are left alone to eternally fight each other. TNG would not really visit this place because Roddenberry liked the open-ended episodes and later so did Moore and other writers. In fact TNG hardly ever revisits locations from TOS when you think about it. Given that they have the same powers and are of the same race and age, no one will truly win this one.
@kanaric
@kanaric Жыл бұрын
They basically didn't want to include aliens like this in TNG. Like even the Andorians only make a cameo. TNG was an era where they were not embracing the TOS at all despite the early seasons being similar.

This episode is still relevant today as it was in 1969. Lokai and Bele hate "monocolored trash" (i.e. humans and/or humanoids), a millennial-long chase from one end of the galaxy to another, and both Lokai and Bele finally have confront each other aboard the Enterprise, Bele believes he has won until they both discover Cheron is a dead world because of 50,000 years (perhaps longer than that) of mounting, pent-up hatreds literally exploding into a planetary massacre. Both Lokai and Bele continue their useless battle on Cheron knowing it will end in their deaths. Hatred, rampant and unchecked, will destroy ANY civilization, planetary or Galactic. We humans are trying to AVOID that same path in the 21st-Century, whether or not we will choose unity or division, order over chaos, hope over fear and MOST IMPORTANT, creation over destruction! Also included, freedom over tyranny!!!!😃😃😃👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏

Great story idea to tackle race, haves and have nots. I used to think the black, white color split would never occur in nature like that, ie a straight line, presumably all the way down their body, but to make it simple, made the actors wear gloves and covered their bodies. ...until I saw cat videos here showing cats with a perfectly straight color division on their face and head, often orange on one side and black on the other, also saw one black, white face split just like Bele. Trek nails it again

Lore may have had a nasty chip in his shoulder for humans, but he's a freaking saint compared to how vile the Cheron-natives are. Then again, we only know Lokai and Bele. Most likely the species as a whole were not extremists like these two.
@SantomPh
@SantomPh 3 жыл бұрын
in the novel "No Time Like The Past" Kirk and Seven of Nine (yeah, go with it) end up on Cheron in a series of time jumps and it is revealed that Bele's side tried to kill Lokai's side with a eugenic weapon, a virus that would kill Lokai's people- only for Lokai's people to attack first and accidentally release the virus early before it is perfected. Hence all the unburied bodies and empty cities the Enterprise finds. What's worse, Bele and Lokai now live on opposite sides of the planet, scheming ways to kill each other. The Federation in Voyager's (therefore DS9 and TNG) avoids Cheron given how long lived and powerful the last two of their native species are. Hence from the dialog in the episode and the beta canon, we can surmise that Bele's people were just like him, and Lokai's people were also just like him.

Wow. I've stumbled upon a bunch of old Star Trek clips that point to The United States (and the world) today. First, in "The Children Shall Lead," the kids finally recognize that the hateful, murderous "angel" they have been following isn't trying to make things great. And now, Loki and Bele show how humanity leverages the smallest difference into the biggest bigotry and hate. Humanity too seems to be destined for a last battlefield.

the cruelest irony here is that they are of the same race and color ratio on their skin, but consider themselves different due to ideology, and both are radicals of those ideologies. Kirk's statement of "I don't see the difference" is the rest of us thinking "oh my god, these guys are so petty."
