In our series, A More Perfect Union, we aim to show that what unites us as Americans is far greater than what divides us. In the small surf town of Seal Beach, California, donuts are suddenly selling fast. That's because customers of a mom-and-pop shop made it their mission to help the owners in their time of need. John Blackstone reports.

@@SuperHuscarl In Asian culture they have a strong belief in dignity and hard work, and tips are considered unnecessary in places like Japan because they don't think good service should be associated with extra reward. Asian people who work tend to want to give good service solely because they are passionate about their job and respect their customers. I honestly have so much respect for them. The entire reason why we have terrorism is because of Islam. Quran (3:151) "Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority". Quran (4:89) "They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks." Quran (8:12) "(Remember) when your Lord inspired the angels... "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them"

There is certainly something to be said for supporting a local business over a chain business. You know that your money is probably going to stay in the are and you know you're helping somebody from your own community and that matters. There was a time around 60 years ago when communities were like this. I grew up knowing who was who, all the firemen were volunteers people knew each other by name. Yes it was a small town. It was safe, polite, children were taught manners, and you could run around outside playing way after dark without fear. Now people don't bother to know the name of their neighbors, who might be needing help, or any of the things that makes a community a community.

there’s also something to be said about that very mindset. while it’s sweet that this man is choosing to work for his money, handouts where handouts are needed is not something that should be looked down upon. even if he decided to accept the community’s offer of a gofundme, i certainly wouldn’t respect him any less. i would actually find it super sweet the community’s eagerness to help him out in his time of need. we really need to stop putting so much emphasis in a persons value being how much labor they contribute.

I'd have to say our last mass shooting is not a terrorism issue. It's something that this country hasn't seemed to take seriously up until now. Domestic terrorism is our largest threat regarding terrorism but mental illness and broken vets who seek help shouldn't be turned away. How many times are we going to allow sick people to LEAGALLY acquire firearms. And how long are we going to ignore mental illness in our inner cities. This wonderful story helps but knowing that politics is going to push our societies true issues into the background is very sad to watch.

There's MANY different Asian cultures because it's a whole diverse continent! The cultures in Iran are going to be different than the cultures in Tibet or Sri Lanka. You can't paint them with a broad brush with the false notion that helping others or being helped is an insult. The most common religions in the Asian continent are Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. One of the most important aspects in each of these religions is charity and generosity. Dāna in Buddhism and Hinduism, and Zakat in Islam, one of the five pillars. And then there's Confucius. "If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help someone else." "Charity, like the sun, brightens every object on which it shines." John Chhan knew he could earn enough with his job to afford everything so he as an individual decided to decline the offer and keep working. The money could go to people unable to do that. That's it. It's not a reflection of "the culture". Plus they're Cambodian so there's a 95% chance they're Buddhist themselves.

Some of you are missing the point entirely. Get to know the people and business owners in your OWN neighborhood and help those in need. Stop asking about how you can buy donuts from hundreds of miles away, and find out what's up with the family that makes donuts 2 miles away. Refugee or not.

As a professional I can vouch for those being the best made donuts. They look perfect(how that glazed ring moved in the tongs to the box means they're light yet rigid, glazed croissant donuts are the only thing more finicky about drain time and heat before glazing which in turn determines optimal crispness) and that takes hard work, meticulous skill, and a bit of experience. Kudos to that man and those who help him.

My mom suffered a raptured brain aneurysm just a few days before Thanksgiving of 2020 during this pandemic. I remember that morning my mom (72) was normal and cooking food for her grandchildren coming over. Next thing later my father found her collapsed face first into the stairs. Fast forward 3.5 months, she is covering and able to walk and move around with a walker. Slowly but surely she is recovering. I hope his wife is recovering well.
