There was a time around 60 years ago when communities were like this. I grew up knowing who was who, all the firemen were volunteers people knew each other by name. Yes it was a small town. It was safe, polite, children were taught manners, and you could run around outside playing way after dark without fear. Now people don't bother to know the name of their neighbors, who might be needing help, or any of the things that makes a community a community.

This man and his wife are a true role model for the American dream: refusing to take the easy money from others, and choosing to work for it and earn it, and not only they made it happen, they inspired thousands with their values. Respect!
@theegote4 жыл бұрын
there’s also something to be said about that very mindset. while it’s sweet that this man is choosing to work for his money, handouts where handouts are needed is not something that should be looked down upon. even if he decided to accept the community’s offer of a gofundme, i certainly wouldn’t respect him any less. i would actually find it super sweet the community’s eagerness to help him out in his time of need. we really need to stop putting so much emphasis in a persons value being how much labor they contribute.
@yourmaker80824 жыл бұрын
@@theegote as someone with the problem you’re talking about I can see where you’re coming from. But, I highly doubt the story would be any less great and people would be any less supportive if he did indeed take the handouts. However, like I said I see where you’re coming from. My family has a little bit of a problem when it comes to accepting money from others, and this includes me. It’s not that we feel we have to work for it, we just feel like if I can earn it myself then you should keep your money and use it on you and not me.

I'd have to say our last mass shooting is not a terrorism issue. It's something that this country hasn't seemed to take seriously up until now. Domestic terrorism is our largest threat regarding terrorism but mental illness and broken vets who seek help shouldn't be turned away. How many times are we going to allow sick people to LEAGALLY acquire firearms. And how long are we going to ignore mental illness in our inner cities. This wonderful story helps but knowing that politics is going to push our societies true issues into the background is very sad to watch.

@MikkiManson133 жыл бұрын
There's MANY different Asian cultures because it's a whole diverse continent! The cultures in Iran are going to be different than the cultures in Tibet or Sri Lanka. You can't paint them with a broad brush with the false notion that helping others or being helped is an insult. The most common religions in the Asian continent are Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. One of the most important aspects in each of these religions is charity and generosity. Dāna in Buddhism and Hinduism, and Zakat in Islam, one of the five pillars. And then there's Confucius. "If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help someone else." "Charity, like the sun, brightens every object on which it shines." John Chhan knew he could earn enough with his job to afford everything so he as an individual decided to decline the offer and keep working. The money could go to people unable to do that. That's it. It's not a reflection of "the culture". Plus they're Cambodian so there's a 95% chance they're Buddhist themselves.
@ginadisbrow93243 жыл бұрын
@@MikkiManson13 That is not correct. The US is not the only country that tips, it is however much more prevalent here than in all other countries. Besides, I have over 100 likes from people who agree, and a confirmation comment from a genuine Asian (Taiwan).
