I absolutely love CCR's version of this song. But I am so glad you did Screamin' Jay's first. You get to see where the inspiration comes from. Plus, I believe because of his theatrics on stage that he was the originator of "Shock Rock." It brings Alice Cooper to mind doesn't it?
@DocRobert
@DocRobert 2 жыл бұрын
And speaking of Alice Cooper… If you’re gonna listen to this version and CCR’s, you kinda gotta hit up Marilyn Manson’s version to hear the 90s take on a classic song. (Ok, that transition was a stretch, but… Manson is kinda the 90s version of Alice Cooper so I just went with it.)

I heard this was originally going to be a typical R&B song, the producer wasn't feeling it. So he bought some barbecue and beer for the guys. After they got drunk, this is what they came up with. Love it.

I think Nina Simone's is the only one that's is just as good as the original. Just how she sang with a different angle... actually made it her own.

Now you know why he was known as "Screaming Jay". He was quite a character. Used a fake birth certificate to enlist in the Army Air Corps in WWII. Became Middleweight boxing champion of Alaska and starred in a few movies and well as "singing" and songwriting...

I never knew that about him. Thanks for sharing. I would tell him thanks for His servie but unfortunately he passed away. Hawkins was in the 50's and Credance in the the late 60's. Music changed in the 60's.

The first version I ever knew of this song was Nina Simone's cover, didn't even know at first it WAS a cover, and hers is thus the definitive version for me, and you should 1000% check it out too. But damn this man could SANG. What a delicious blues song, yet still a precursor for so many different styles...and pioneering goth on top of everything!

Screaming Jay had a role as a santeria/voodoo priest in the 90s movie Perdita Durango which was known as Dance With the Devil in the US. It was a crazy little film with Javier Bardem and Rosie Perez, and of course there was some Screaming Jay on the soundtrack.

The world and his wife have covered this song. Alan Price(ex The Animals) had a big hit in the UK with it and even the band I was in at the time did a version! Very different from the original though. But probably the most well known--and arguably best version, is by Nina Simone. You should give that a listen.

Love this, brings me back and makes a perfect Halloween song. That along with A purple people eater, by Big Bopper, And With Doctor Bt David Seville and The chipmunks. Remember Hawkins was done in Nov 1956, Yes the 50's I believe it was meant to be a little scary, and I do not get that from Credence, also they did a good job of their own style. This is the first time I've actually Seen Hawkins too. Only heard him on the radio with the rest of them unless I saw them on American Bandstand.

Dude it's been 9 months. Just put out ccr's version. Alot of people don't realize that in the 40's 50's and 60's especially, music was made for the expressed purpose of being weird. A sort of comic relief, and opportunity for those not so perfect. There was even a separate top 40 kinda thing for it.

I love it because it's so subversive. Consider the context - this must have scared the shit out of some white people in 1956. I'm white too, but man, people who might have expected a black guy to act subdued to them instead wasn't afraid to be completely crazy and a freak show. It's the epitome of rock and roll - challenging people, rather than bowing to their expectations. So many artists drew inspiration from this - black and white. It's raw, it's guttural and it doesn't ask for any apologies.
