I played this video to my mum who worked at Rolls Royce in the 70's as a leather upholsterer.. she told me that the techniques were the same, but they did it 10 times faster, and they didn't use staples to align the leather. They also triple stitched and glued both seats and backs. She also said that the smell of the glue made her feel light headed. Gluing was done by all men, while the stitching was all women, though they worked together in the same workshop.

Thanks for sharing with us a nice story of your mom! How interesting would be to hear from her how leather upholstery was done at that time inside that prestigious Rolls Royce factory. I understand in a factory the procedures should be done in a faster way. On the other hand, most of my videos are educational and should be performed at a slow pace to make interested people understand what about. Regarding the use of staples I inspired myself from clothes tailoring process. I remember long time ago I wanted to baste pieces same way tailors do. I had no much success and I inspired myself to use staples instead. Thin stationery staples for thin materials and sturdier staples for thick materials. I put staples on some important 'points of reference' (V notches) and it really is very helpful to get precise junctions.

Thank you for the amazing videos! I have a consew 225 and any time I use rubber cement or double sided tape, the machine will skip stitches. How do you avoid that and getting a gummy needle? Thank you 😀
@Cechaflo8 жыл бұрын
Let the glue on both surfaces dry for quite a while (10 min. approx) to avoid a skipped stitch. Rub some 'sewing machine oi over the needle to avoid the gummy issue. If the problem persists, perhaps the time for the 'shuttle hook point' is reaching the 'needle scarf' too 'fast'...it should be 'delayed' or moved backwards a little. The machine you have is a very powerful and excelent.

@Cechaflo4 жыл бұрын

Hi Cesar, my skiving machine requires me to pull the leather between a blade and a roller. After it is skived the leather will become stretched. I am afraid this will create wrinkles in my cover. Will this be an issue? Should I try to shrink the leather? Thanks, /John
@AREA-sj4ec8 жыл бұрын
what stitch length were you sewing with on that leather. and do you change lengths.
@Cechaflo8 жыл бұрын
The stitches are of 3 mm long and they go 3 mm from the center. I'm using a thin polyester thread. If I would use a thicker thread, I'd use a 4 mm stitch length, but 3 mm from the row of stitches to the center line. I also like 4mm stitch length and 4 mm to the central line. If I would do car seats I'd use 5 mm stitch length and 1/4" from the center line to row of stitches. Thanks for watching the video!

As mentioned in video description the distance between row of stitches is of 6 mm and the stitches are 3 mm long. Some pieces of car interior such as consoles, dashboards have these measures. I think it is matter of taste.
