I lived in Den Haag/ The Hague, for more than 13 years, and my job took me away a few times, ultimately that in 2006, I didn't return to The Netherlands, following my work in Houston, Texas, USA, much to my dismay. Even though I am English, I've always loved The Netherlands and the people. I am still in touch with my Dutch friends from the 70s, 80s and the 2000's and as much as I enjoy living in the USA, I can never, ever forget the friendships, the lifestyle, my church and everything else about the country. As a child I used to play Amazing Grace on my recorder to my elderly neighbours that lived right next door to me. Never really knew whether they liked it but their cat seemed to enjoy the tunes. I continued playing and to my surprise weeks later my elderly neighbour called me over to theirs and we had some great times, discussing different things, and was shown all the hand made crafts, the old black and white photos of her family, mostly departed ones and the ones that lived on the other side of the world, in Australia. I sensed the empty void, that the level of loneliness had brought with this great couple, and it was then that I asked if I could be their friend and I remembered the smile they gave me when replied with a yes. They gave so much love and kindness while I gave them the music to lift up their spirits. They are no longer around but I've cherished those memories and carry them on today.
