It seems to me you are a HUGE Idina Mendel fan because what Cynthia did was take an already iconic role and made it even more iconic. To say Cynthia Erivo was just ok… is an insult to how brilliant she was in this movie. Since the film’s release, she has catapulted into the Best Actress Oscar conversation. Let’s keep it real here.

Yeah I agree it's like saying she could easily be replaced. If people have favorites he could have just said, he was more into Glinda's character than Elphiba and still give Cynthia her props if he really "enjoyed the movie" but hey it's his take.

Agree. His entire review of Cynthia's performance is clearly his opinion but boy... not a very sound one when you consider that her vocals felt raw, real and punched to the heart and I didn't think that was possible after listening to the original Broadway show live. But she did and she owned that role and remastered it and as has been said, made it her own. Bravo to both Cynthia and Idina! LEGENDS.

The last part of the Wizard and I was the best part of the song!!!! Expand your horizon, bro. And Defying Gravity was broken down in the original stage performance as well, but it was recorded only for Idina's parts; hence the continuity. Without the breakdown and dialogues in between, it won't have the same impact. The most powerful part was when Elphaba asks whether Glinda wants to come with her. Glinda doesn't answer, they both know they have to go on separate journeys, Glinda proceeds by singing "I hope you're happy now that you're choosing this." All this within Defying Gravity. When Elpaha falls and sees the reflection of her younger self, it was so necessary for the plot but also for the greater impact of saying the final "it's me".. So yeah, watch it again!!

I have seen the Broadway version, and I loved this one as well. I think they both did amazing, but where Arianna was almost copying, Kristen Cynthia chose to pay homage to Idina while making the character hers. Both were great, though.

I loved the movie. I was absolutely enthralled from beginning to end and I didn't even realise that the time was passing. I had never seen the Broadway play and I didn't know what it was about other than related to the Wizard of Oz. I went in with zero expectations and was absolutely floored by everything. The sets, the performances, the dances, the story line. Everything was perfection. This does deserve all the awards. Cynthia and Ariana did an amazing, mind-blowing job. Cynthia's voice was pure magic and she threw herself into the role. When Cynthia cried, I got emotional. Ariana was superb as well. In my humble opinion this movie is going to be a CLASSIC.

This movie is SO GOOD!!! One of the few movies that lives up to the hype! I’ve seen it twice and would gladly see it again. My only complaint is I hate that we have to wait an entire year to see part two. Both leads deserve Oscar nominations as well as the film itself. Best movie I’ve seen in years! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cynthia's Elphaba was the greatest most emotional portrayal in a musical I've ever scene, and I've watched dozens and dozens over and over for more than 1/2 a century. Octavia and Ariana were able to emotionally expand (thanks to John Chu's extensive facial close ups) upon the great but necessarily expressively limited performances both actresses Idina and Kristin brought to the stage 2 full decades ago. I won't go into the profound allegorical parallels of the story to how truly repugnant and tragic our world political situation has become. I'll save that for another day. Go see this film...

Anytime you cut from Erivo to Menzel is was shocking how much better Cynthia is. Menzel's voice is so sharp and nasal. HUGE improvement in the movie.

Moving the climax of "Defying Gravity" to just after the breathtaking shot of the Emerald City going dark before they pull away from Elphaba to reveal all of the billowing fabric was brilliant because at that moment, everyone - both the actors on-screen and the audience - was left with nothing but awe at the extent of Elphaba's capabilities.

I disagree with your review of Cynthia. I thought she breathed new life into the role of Elphaba. She made some interesting and (for me) great choices as an actress and as a singer. Sure different from Idina’s portrayal but still powerfully memorable. Although we were all in awe of Ariana and her performance; for me, Cynthia was the heart and soul. She was my anchor. 💚 🩷
