Short story. Struggling with mental health and self acceptance, it was damn tough in life. I was so down. Alhamdulillah I found celeste.Celeste made me accept who I am, my desires, my insecurities. It made me to accept failure and try more irl. I saw failure as one step towards success. These are some ways celeste impacted me. I am doing B sides now, I was someone who died in the first screen. Me doing B sides now. I always thought I am a failure. Despite people quoting otherwise. I am planning to make a video soon on story. The story is just so deep imo. You know what's so great about Celeste's story? It tells you that Madeline wants to climb the mountain to get over some stuff, because that ideally will make her better, it will help her get over something in her life; however her insecurities and anxieties tell her she won't really be able to, that it's an impossible task. As you progress through the story she's able to make peace with the side she doesn't like about herself, understanding her reasons, why it makes her act in the ways she does and by doing that she the becomes able to start actually improving herself. In fact she needs the entirety of herself to finally climb the mountain, all of her energies channeled through correctly make her able to achieve her "impossible" objective. So you climb the whole mountain again in level 7 and it's amazing, the music helps you fly through the challenging levels and you finally reach the summit to the stunning view of the valley below, Madeline reached the top. Except it's not really Madeline who reached the top is it? You did it, you reached the summit of Celeste, quite literally, you put aside all your insecurities and took all your patience and determination to push yourself further, the more deaths you accumulate in each level, the more it shows how willing you are to get to the end, even against all odds. The game shows you that no matter the adversities and the difficulty of the task at hand you can do it if you're determined to and the mountain gets even steeper with the B and C sides and then farewell, but the gist is always the same and enough determination will get you to the end of those too...

I'm really stoked about your video on this! It's my favorite game ever. I had a similar experience to yours: I played through the campaign, really loved it, thought that the B sides were too hard and then put the game down. I'd play it on flights occasionally but that was all. I had about eight or ten hours on it at that point. About a year later I picked it up again when I heard that a DLC had dropped and was able to complete my first B side. I got absolutely hooked and kept going. I eventually was able to finish the DLC (I won't say how many hours I had on it by that point lol) and it was an unbelievably rewarding experience. There's so much more here and it's beyond incredible, the game just keeps getting better and the best of the level design by far is in the DLC. I'd consider continuing with it, I appreciate it so much more than I did after just finishing the campaign; it went from a game that I loved to something way more than that. I've watched a lot of your videos and from what I've seen I think the experience and the gameplay might appeal to you. I'd be beyond stoked to see a second video with your thoughts after completing the DLC.

Love how you have a few critiques, but by the end of the video you're glowing about it and praising it, and I barely recalled any critique other than the minor story stuff :P Having only played a few levels of Celeste, to what extent Mark of the Ninja is a platformer, it's my favourite, though it's also one of my favourite games period. In a single anything goes playthrough, you can only avoid so much platforming, and doing so usually means slicing and dicing all the way. It is crucial to staying alive and away from enemies, on harder difficulties, and in certain playstyles. One element of 100%ing the game is beating levels in different playstyles, like being a pure ghost never getting spotted or touching a soul, I've done some nasty hops right over enemies in the dark just scraping their vision cones. It's definitely not a pure platformer given other stealth and combat options, and not fast paced like Celeste, but it's done well where it counts.

Hey man you ever heard of sundered? One of my favourite games and is a side scrolling action platformer with a heavy souls influence. So many people shafted the game cause they didn’t like the constant hordes attacking you and wouldn’t give the game a shot. It’s my fave cause of the story, world and atmosphere. An evil hostile world, that you can’t escape. Not even death will help. Travel across 3 massively different areas, from science labs all the way to eldritch cities. 4 cool boss fights (one for each area and a final boss), Multiple endings and a system called elder shards; hand them in to make your abilities eldritch and way more powerful/cool or destroy them and buff your abilities in more standard ways. Such an awesome game and I think a lot can be learned from it, would love to hear your opinions on it, since it’s such a small/hardly talked about game. It only cost me $5 and I got over 100hours out of it, steak of a deal imo.

It wasn't quite about self doubt or believing in yourself. It was about someone with crippling anxiety finding a way to cope with it by throwing themselves at something impossible and then dealing with the anxiety still not going away. It was a bit of a self insert for the creator, who later realized their anxiety was because they were trans. That said, it was a story many who suffer from anxiety and depression were able to relate to quite deeply as it wasn't just about self doubt and believing in yourself, but about where that 'just do it' belief can fall short. Boiling it down like that is a bit misguided, I am surprised to hear you say the story was obvious but then seemed to miss quite a bit of it.

I disagree with the strawberry compass idea. I'd say after completing the main game, you should just be able to backtrack or maybe even pick what screen/section you want to start on. A simple "return to previous screen" button in the pause menu would do wonders. This way you still have to find the strawberries yourself, but it doesn't turn into too much of a grind where you're replaying and dying on a bunch of screens.

In regards to the story and themes being too obvious and on-the-nose, I don't really have a problem with it because the characters are so compelling. It's worth noting that in conveying the game's meaning, sometimes they have to be as obvious as possible, depending on the game, because when there's any level of ambiguity or being open to interpretation, especially regarding the game's final ending (we all know the one), fans can get VERY obtuse, which introduced a level of toxicity to the game.

Why haven't you used the "Assist-Mode" to clear the B & C-Sides? It was explicitly implemented for that purpose, so that even the weakest most unskilled and disabled player can achieve 100% & all achievements that are to get there. Celeste is highly influential in that regard because it establised a new standard for video games "assist modes" that allow you cater the gameplay experience entirely to your will, no hurdle can be too big, if you slowly decrease the difficulty around to your skill level, up to invincibility, infinite dashes, endless stamina and even the abilitiy to skip chapters you don't like. You missed out a lot of stuff in this game, although the assist mode would've allowed you for seeing all its content. There are absolutely no downsides to it, so you don't have to feel bad using it.

due to ur intro, i'll just write this, hope u'll see it. Do not force yourself to play more games, if you dont want to play em it's fine, if you want to open your eyes to a bigger wider world, it's fine too. But forcing yourself just for the sake of "ppl've played it, i should play it too!" or something that is not your own motivation but others asked you to mindset, you'll kill your interest extremely fast. I come from a different background but in short, i love video games too, but due to my own biases and taste, I was not able to enjoy other games for a very long time, JRPG / RPG was not my thing for over a decade, i had no interest on First Person Action / Shooter genre due to how boring + chore those games were (i knew doom 3 back then, but i didnt enjoy it either), and due to specific event happened back in 10 years ago, i've started become extremely jaded to this industry, and no matter how many "goty" games i've tried, 90 percent of these games are just big fat meh to me. I used to play something when other ppl said it's great because, the games that i loved was not available for a very long time, and i thought they were all dead because "Modern Trend". Im still very jaded to this very day tho, but hey if you truly like something, just enjoy it, do not force yourself just play for a review or for something else that is not for your own enjoyment, I have zero interest Celeste despite i am a big fan of side scroller action / platformer, and as soon as i've learnt this game has a "great story" first and then gameplay comes to second, and most of the ppl just said "damn it's f@cking hard", i'll just ignore this game instead :/ i mean come on, modern games always have this vibe since.. dark souls? and i dont like dark souls or souls genre in general (code vein is an exception tho), maybe it is a really great game, but i doubt it is for me, i miss light gun games, great super fun n hard arcades, and i want more games like dmc, doom eternal, god hand, bayonetta, grip (combat racing game), gvg extreme maxi boost on, tales of arise etc. im so done with modern games no matter if they "retro" or not, i just want a game, not a story simulator.. anyway.. it's quite long but well, hope you'll read it and have a good day!

They never waved a giant sign in front of the player saying " Hey this is about dealing with your insecurities incase you haven't noticed". Honestly while the game didn't need a story...the story made the experience somehow that much better then it already would have been and it really helps make this game one of the best indie games I've played.

I played through this once, but after seeing this I may try it again. Also, I LOVE the "WARNING: DOOM ETERNAL REFERENCE INCOMING" so much. just a great meme to annoy the haters.

Hey mayo, I recommend you check out this game called hotline miami. It's a top down twin stick shooter with some great neon late-80s drug trip visuals, a great soundtrack and a really intriguing story. Love ur vids btw

No comments about the temple level?? Man that level is a masterpiece. You go through that level when Madeline is probably at her lowest in the game psychologically. And the way the level designer incorporated this feeling is so masterful. The temple has this haunting dread and sorrow and depressing atmosphere to it. The temple is probably the most twisted level you have seen so far is the game and it complements madeline's mentality. And just the setup in the start of the level where the game slowly introduces to the level's mechanics, to the introduction to the weird octupus monster, to the way you go inside a mirror. What follows are one of the best puzzles in any video game. And when you finally escape at the end, you feel a sense of relief. Ik that you didnt enjoy the fact that the themes of the narrative were very in the face. I get that. But, very few games even come close to delivering their narrative through their level design and mechanics. Silent hill also does it really great where you arent just watching a cutscene, but rather actually experiences all the themes of its story through its gameplay. Most games rely purely on cutscenes to deliver their story which is fine for action games like doom or dmc. But delivering the story like this is truly amazing and makes celeste one of my favourite games of all time

I'd love to hear your thoughts on Rain World. It's a "survival platformer" with one of the coolest art styles I've seen. It's utterly brutal and is one of those games that feels like the world was not meant for you. Rain World isn't very well known so your playing of it might bring it some well-deserved attention.

I'm new to the channel so still getting my bearings on what kind of games you would like but I would be curious on your thoughts on Hollow Knight. It's compared to Dark Souls sometimes but I feel such similarities are fairly superficial as the combat feels completely different and in a way that I think you in particular would appreciate. There is also a lot of platforming involved and a progression system largely based around new abilities and expanding your moveset rather than stats. The setting is also probably more interesting to you - think Secret of Nimh but with bugs. It does have a fantasy edge to it but the sheer variety of environments as well as the unique scale introduced by being a bug should keep your eyeballs engaged. It's also in my opinion, a gorgeous 2d game with an amazing soundtrack and in a way that is not trying to ape the retro look.

I like Hollow Knight, but something about the way it feels doesn't really do it for me. The physics and movement. Hard to say why. It's a game I'd rather watch someone play than play myself.

Been playing 2D platformers for 25 years since Mario Bros., and Celeste is one of greatest 2D platformers of all time, almost possibly the greatest.

i scored the collectors edition last year, in my top 3 of all time. i love how the difficulty teaches you the game, and it even says that in the tips, the music is good. its good. but i did play and beat The Messenger before Celeste, so that game kinda spoiled me soundtrack wise. its not better than messenger but a lot of memorable tunes BTW the B side of Reflections is the best level design ive ever seen in a 2d platformer

Sonic games are heavily based on physics and systems mastery in order to become better at the games and get high ranks & speed. A few might make for good content on your channel. Particularly Unleashed and Adventure 2

@infinitedeath13843 жыл бұрын
1:46 Yes that is a controversial statement. There are many original platformers, some of which have had remakes that many consider to be the best. Crash bandicoot and spyro are among these, and I hope you give them a shot at some point.
@underthemayo3 жыл бұрын
Played them years ago. Great games.

@@underthemayo Glad to hear it! I've played the originals as well, and the remakes too. I recommend them, because unlike resident evil 3 remake, the remake of crash bandicoot 1-3 and spyro 1-3 are actually good.

I would like to hear your opinion on Blackhole. It is more puzzle based game but there is some platforming and if you give yourself a challange to collect every selfburns it is pretty challenging.

I’ve played the B Sides and uh… Spoilers ig? Beating all the B Sides (Chapter 8 included) allows you to access the latter half of Chapter 9, which is a super lengthy chapter to begin with. The extreme challenge is nice, but it drags out just a bit too much, kind of like the Pantheon of Hallownest from Hollow Knight but with checkpoints per room. God forbid Mayo ever plays Farewell, as it took me 9 hours to beat it on my first try.
