I think a detailed story would not make it a better expirience for what the movie want to be. Its about the emotions of people in a confined space. To show for example the whole war and things behind it would greatly decrease the character element and it would be a completly different movie. Sometimes less is more and this movie plays it well. It's not really underrated, most of the people who watched it even when came out really liked it and was well received by them. The problem was the horrible marketing and most people thought it will be a generic action movie and didn't bother seeing it. Underrated movies usually get mixed responses from the audience have worse reviewes than they deserve because they didn't understand it or was ahead of it's time, but perspective changes over time. Good example for underrated movie is Fight Club. On release the movie was a flop and got both bad critics and audience reviews. But now is a cult classic. The ending can seem confusing to some people, but it really isn't. The attack on the Omega happens the night before the invasion, so Cage has the Omega's blood spill on him right before he dies, so he triggers one last reset. But the reset is always a day earlier, which is why he wakes up on the helicopter and not in processing getting called "maggott". Cage couldn't cause another reset again, because the Omega is dead and the Omega was the one actually doing the re-setting.
@GARYHODGKINSON Жыл бұрын
Except he resets to before the Omega dies, and yet, it's still dead, before it died.
@peteg475 Жыл бұрын
@@GARYHODGKINSON It was the Omega's last reset, and it was mortally wounded. If you're looking to completely solve time-travel paradoxes in movies, you won't have any luck.
@GARYHODGKINSON Жыл бұрын
@@peteg475 It's not a time travel paradox, it's a literal rewriting of the established rules. The whole point of the reset is to, well, reset everything. But it isn't a reset, is it. It's the consequences of the day being carried back into the past, which is what the reset is explicitly designed to negate. It doesn't work. There are two ways to almost make it work, like the days are not being reset after all, it's the Omega physically travelling back in time, which is the only way to get a dead Omega back to the past, and because there are not duplicate Omegas (the rest of the hive wouldn't have died if there was a spare Omega) it means that each time it does, it destroys the original Omega existing in the prior day. So, the Omega is dying, travels back to the past, wiping the version of itself, that was already there, from existence, and then dies. Which is silly. Or, it's a days of Future Past kind of deal, it sends it's mind back into the past, but again for this to work, it needs to destroy the mind that was already in the body, overwriting it like a game being saved on a computer (which would match the videogame inspired plot) but it is a process enacted by the body, not the brain, so, the Omega seeing it's imminent demise, hastily initiates the mind transfer, but it takes a couple of seconds to take effect, during which the Omega suffers brain death, but the body completes the process shortly after that, and the Omega in the past has it's mind erased, and overwritten with the mind of a dead Omega. It's possible to make it almost coherent, but... If you are telling a story, and the audience needs to create their own story to make sense of your story, then you have failed as a storyteller.

What really interested me about this film is that it combines the novel it was based on (the Japanese book All You Need Is Kill) with the World War II operation it also served to commemorate (the D-Day landings). It was even released on the 70th anniversary of those landings. Verdun is also a reference to WWI, and Operation Downfall was another WWII operation, a planned invasion of Japan. Also, can we appreciate that the story of this film has basically become a way of describing Tom Cruise's entire acting career? For his first 15 years, outside of the original Top Gun and Days of Thunder, he wasn't really that much of an action star. His bravery and dedication to his work has increased since he started the Mission Impossible series, just like his character here became better skilled as a fighter with each loop, to the point that he has done his own stunts for many years now.

To address your confusion - The Omega landed on the Earth and dispatched its mimic horde to conquer the planet. The Hordes are controlled by the 'Alpha' mimics (which are blue and not common)... If an 'Alpha' is killed in battle, the Omega restarts time and remembers...It knows what to do to win the battles. As a result, the mimic horde is unbeatable. What happened before this movie was Rita killed an Alpha in Verdun and got covered in its blood... so, she relived the same day at Verdun over and over... She met Dr. Carter and explained her situation and they worked to locate the Omega when no one would believe her. She won the battle at Verdun, but her injury and subsequent blood transfusion ended her 'loop' and her connection to the Omega's power... so time was allowed to continue and she found that the Omega was not in the location she had thought. When Bill Cage was sent into battle, Rita knew this was her last fight without the power... Cage killed a blue mimic in battle and relived the beach landing over and over until Rita revealed what happened to her. With Cage restarting the day, the Omega has no memory because an Alpha was not restarting the day, but it sensed that someone else was restarting the day. Dr. Carter had met Rita (while she was in her time loop) and confirmed his suspicions about the Omega and Alphas 'restarting time'... He brought his findings and research to the General, who refused to believe & dismissed him, reducing him to a technician's role. Bill Cage discovered that his visions were a fake... It was 'projected' by the Omega to bring him out into the open to reclaim its power from Cage (It did the same to Rita)... But Dr. Carter's transponder device revealed the Omega's actual location in Paris. Neither Bill Cage nor Rita had the power, but Cage killed the Omega in the end, rendering the mimic horde lifeless (Both Rita and Cage absorbed an Alpha's blood and got its connection to the Omega's power) ... But then, Bill Cage absorbed the Omega's blood this time and claimed its power to 'restart the day' as he died, bringing him back to the day he landed in London. This time, Cage restarting time w/ the Omega's power caused a surge, which rendered the mimic horde lifeless since Cage had already killed the Omega before restarting the day, and he had no connection to the Alphas or the mimic horde. Rita remembers her ordeal at Verdun, but has no memory of what she and Cage did to win the war.

Yes, Enemy Mine is such a good movie! No time travel, though. I think it borrows the general idea from an old movie with Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune, Hell in the Pacific, where an American pilot and a Japanese pilot both end up on the same deserted island during World War 2. And they have to cooperate to survive. But Enemy Mine takes this idea further. I guess it is also a bit like The Last Samurai, in the way that the two enemies bond.

Operation: Downfall was a proposed alternative plan to end the Pacific Theater of WWII. Rather than using atomic bombs, it called for an invasion of the Japanese Home Islands. he was ALWAYS a major. after the colonel had him arrested, he basically stripped him of his rank and told the recruiting guy that he was impersonating an officer. but he wasn't. but that's what everyone thinks because that's what the colonel told them. but he really WAS a major and he was on television talking about the war effort and all that. but he disobeyed a direct order by someone higher up and got smacked down as a result.

So good but so underrated...Very hard to find a non enjoyable film with Tom Cruise, mostly in the last decade, the man just have a madly cohesive career.

Yup, was just thinking that. He's maybe the only action star that has started in the 80s and is still making awesome movies today

Personally I don’t think you should worry about having to talk. Just react as you would sitting on the couch with friends or family. Then when it’s over you can go over what you liked or didn’t about whatever you watched. People react more than they realize without using words. Just my opinion. 🤙🏻 Hope you don’t receive this as a criticism.

what are you talking about? Bill Cage was very capable of and good at dying... he did it so many times, he himself lost track :o)

I love the camera work showing how he's looking at her while she's talking. :) Such a subtle depiction of how his feelings toward her are growing 😊

The Omega lives or dies in all timelines. Cruise killed an Alpha, the omega reset the day but still blew up on that timeline. Tom comes back to a new day but the Omega is gone
