There was never any hope for a happy "what if", because even if she had loved him as he was, he despised himself nonetheless and his self-loathing burned more powerful than love. His "love" for her was little more than fuel for his self-hate, and given the things he did as the General, manipulating innocent soldiers to their deaths and refusing to admit any failure, and as the Nowhere King, where he created the minotaurs to be his "family" yet routinely devours them alive on a whim, it's clear he would have been a hateful, sociopathic and likely emotionally abusive partner even if they did end up together. He wasn't a good person "turned" into a monster: he was always a monster, deep inside.

Ironically it shows how his insecurities were passed on to elk and not the General. Elk is the one who held himself back where as the General didn't. In retrospect, it kinda of makes sense why the General didn't want to be joined to Elk.

They were the same person, the difference is one got everything he wanted and the other did not. So the General became emboldened and the Elk even more crippled by self loathing.

@@philipgood5041 I think it's worse than that. The General is a lot more bold and confident than Elk is. Even in his own backstory, Elk is easily flustered, unwilling to take credit for his accomplishments, or make any kind of personal change, content with letting himself be led by others. And what are Elks known for doing? Being skittish. I think Elk contains the General's shyness and awkwardness, all the things that kept him from pursuing the woman. Free of those things, he had nothing holding him back (except for Elk). Elk who puts all his self worth into his human connections, and refuses to seek out other Centaurs to be loved by. The story is about two halves, one who didn't let himself move on, and the other who saw no way past his insecurities, other than to remove them entirely.

Mom or even grandma timeline for this series is a bit iffy. Cause the woman is at least 100 years old. Our youngest centaur is 47 years old, and no one in human world remembers why the war started besides the general. Most of the centaurs don't really remember the war either and each backstory except for Wamawink's is after the rift closes. Zulius is the only one who mentions really knowing something about the war. Besides hey war we don't talk about it. So both were probably very young when it started. Wamawink might have even been in her 20's-30's by the time she meets Glendale.

Actually, it it more to do with Centurworld's magic itself. Remember, Horse's Design didn't change until later in the series, when she learned to _Not_ take things so seriously. The same applies here. Elkerto _looks_ serious because he held himself seriously... But the moment he saw the princess, he completely dropped all seriousness and looked Goofy.

Haven't seen the show but the general didn't seem to be evil... for someone who has read the wikis and seen some clips, don't get why people are hating on him so bad. He hated himself sure..and by doing that. he locked up his other half for over 10 years... and it seemed to cause a huge mess, creating a real devil. but he was no mass murderer. the human part. I think he's no different than a lot of humans. I know he stabbed that girl who did not know of his connection to the nowhere king. but who wouldn't stab someone if they knew a persons actions would end their life. and who doesn't hate themselves sometimes and go for years sometimes decades. we humans are just lucky I guess to not have magic potions to split ourselves apart. thank heaven. lol
