This is THE best myth buster I have seen on Ceramic coating. I only have one tiny bone to pick. 99% of people misuse the term "spiders" and "swirls" and they think they are interchangeable. Technically they are not the same. (I am not referring to you since I'm sure you know the diff ) Maybe you can do a video showing exactly the diff in how they look. Spiders = fine scratches when viewed in the sun look like "spiderwebs" its short term or long term abuse of the clear coat ( poor hand wash technique, wiping using anything dry, auto carwashes, assembly line "hand wash" places, california dusters, and a million other types of things that can cause clear coat abuse) *also 99% of people THINK spiders are "minor" scratch damage ....it is anything but and to correct takes experience, skill and time and for a daily driver not worth the $500-$600 to have a pro correct. **If people only knew how dang easy it is to prevent the vast majority of spider damage. Swirls = "holographic looking scratches" They have a very different pattern and much more broad vs tight spiderwebs. Swirls are caused by poor rotary polisher with wool bonnet technique primarily by rookies at production collision shops. I see it in parking lots ALL THE TIME. Or inexperienced "detailers" trying to to a "quick" polish on a car using a rotary and wool. There is a very specific pattern and technique when using wool and a rotary so that you do not cause "holographic scratches " and precious few Pro's understand the technique. Its far easier to keep from causing polishing mistakes using a modern style direct drive DA.. Keep up the great work! Karl

Awesome demystification of ceramic coating! Thank you and I agree. I will definitely get ceramic coating for my truck but only because I want it to be easier to clean -- I will clean it just as often as I do now, though. Not to be scratch-and-dent-proof, invincible, levitating or any of those myths. I considered a clear bra and vinyl wrap first but soon realized that my truck spends a lot of time in the sun and those solutions would give me one year of returns at best on a $4K investment. Pro ceramic coating may fair better maybe for up to 5 years if I am disciplined about covering up my truck.

All I know is that I went to go volunteer at my local wildlife sanctuary and I came outside and there was a goat standing on the hood of my brand new 2019 insight. Luckily the month prior I got it ceramic coated all I had to do was take the hose and a microfiber cloth and wipe off the hoof marks and the dirt. The only thing there is is one small scuff mark. I'm sure it can be fixed, it's not even that noticeable. The ceramic coating saved my car. I couldn't be happier.

I haven't bought into this ceramic coating seal. Very good video on pros and cons. However, I've the same results for over 40 years using Maguire's mirror glaze formula which is applied in a 4 step process. If one is willing to spend 6 to 7 hours on the first time after one buyer a new vehicle or repainted.. you'll end up with a deep mirror finish result. After that just maintenance.. but also not scratch or elements proof.

Hey Jason, been doing a lot of research re ceramic coatings and would love some feedback from your years of experience with metallic finish cars. We’ve had previous new vehicles with metallic paint that have had ‘coatings’ applied by dealers (I know, but we didn’t know better back then). One was a black metallic and the other white, and in both cases, in my opinion the metallic finish was underwhelming. The paint was ‘glossy’ but defiantly looked flatter, and I didn’t think much of it at the time. My current car has been professionally prepared and coated, and it too has metallic paint - much more metallic than the previous vehicles, and it too appears to have has lost some ‘sparkle’. Yes the finish is glossy with awesome beading & highly reflective, which seems to be the finish the detailing guys all love, but it’s enhancing the flecks of metallic I want. I’ve scoured the internet and only come across 2 detailers who agree with what I’ve experienced. To the point that I’ve been told it must have been poor preparation that caused this ‘side effect’. However I have screen shots of numerous vehicles showing a highly flecked metallic in a before shot and an almost ‘sparkle free’, glossy, reflective finish in an after shot. I’m changing my car in a couple of months, hence the research, and coming down on the side of wax to keep the sparkle. So what do you think? Does the desirable glossy, mirror like finish you get with ceramic type coatings reduce how obvious flecks in metallic paint are?

Thank you for making this great video. I have questions. 1) How significant the vehicle become scratch resistance when we apply ceramic coating vs uncoat? 2) Do wax, sealant, and hybrid sealant has same level of adding scratch resistance level compared to ceramic coating? So glad and appreciate if you have time to answer my questions. Thank you. :D
@1kontrabida Жыл бұрын
Let me answer your questions since no one had the time to answer.... ANswer 1. I would say about 4 ot of 10. answer 2 i would say 3 of of 5. Now heres a quick tip, if you maintain ur car religiously a sealant would suffice. Also the most important everyone needs to think/ decide is slickness that is why ceramic coated cars have the ability to repel dust, rain and snow better than of non ceramic product which in turn makes maintaining and upkeep of your vehicle is much easier and enjoyable. That is the bulk of ceramic coating and what everyone needs to know. Sealant and waxes does the same but lasts fort about a month to months or on your next wash because their not as resilient as ceramic. Can i get 2, 3-7 years on ceramic coating? yes if u leave ur car inside and dont drive the car if u drive it out it'll be expose to all the elements and decreases its longevity. What is a realistic time frame for ceramic? imho and as my golden rule for cars being driven daily is i would be happy to see one year then prep the car and strip whatever is left on the paint off of ceramic, clay and polish the whole car or only polish areas that needs it. Then apply the ceramic coating of your choice. Hope this helps

My friend tells customers with obvious visible tattoos “You put sunscreen on your tattoos when your out in the sun to keep the color, right?” 98% of them all say “Oh yeah! It works too, this red/orange/colors etc hasn’t changed a bit in 5 years...” Then he explains the ceramic coating on car is about the same thing or principles of sunscreen. Yes, still wash your car and still wax it depending upon your weather & road conditions. He’s only had one guy get pissy w him and it was on a rather ABUSED & NEGLECTED Bentley GT. Guy obviously had been doing drive-thru BRUSHES car washes from the telltale slashing marks that they leave after too much use of that “style” car wash. However, owner of detailing co made the Bentley jerk a “deal”. He said “I’ll strip all the layers of whatever is on your Bentley, clay bar it ALL, give it a light buff and THEN ceramic coat it BUT you have to bring it back in 2 weeks for a touch-up. I promise you will be satisfied and your Bentley will have a mirror finish.” Guy went for the “deal” and they basically just stripped ALL the garbage wax & polish that was on the car and gave it a really solid ceramic coating 2x wiping it up/on/around for 35-45min thus NEVER letting it dry until rinse off time. Used blowers and tons of CLEAN micro towels to get EVERY SPOT DRY AND SHINED UP. Owner was elated when he saw the car and happily paid in full, plus promised he’d be back in 2 weeks for touch up (that he was getting a discount for). Sure enough! Guys back in two weeks and still thrilled with the looks of his Bentley. NOW he sets appointments for every 2-3 weeks and even has sent in probably 35-40 “friends” with high end cars for same treatment. Creative customer service basically doubled my friends business and EVERYONE is satisfied with amazing look of their cars. Some even going as far to say “It didn’t look this good when I bought it!”

I was charged $2000 for this coat to be put on because I was told (1) It would last 5 years, (2) It would prevent scratches, (3) I could just rinse the car off because the seal was that good, (4) I was never told about a boost every three months, and had to buy this Boost to apply every other car wash , it was like what was the purpose of having this done If I have to apply something every other car was? Is it true that if I have to park in the open and take the damage of the sun, a ceramic coating is a waste of money, I am better off waxing?
@nin9liv9s63 Жыл бұрын
Heck no I'd say that is incorrect. Ceramic coatings are excellent for UV protection, also keeps it more permanently sealed so stuff won't stick in the pores. I have my own small detailing business, I'd recommend Clay bar, polish, alcohol wipe down, then I like to use the Adam's advanced graphine ceramic coating. It's about $115-150 depending on if you also want the install kit which is good for people wanting to do it themselves. If you do try to tackle yourself just make sure you are following dry times, this is much more important than wax. As soon as it starts to change color start wiping off, maybe a minute to 3 depending on temperature. If you leave some on on accident, it's literally going to take paint thinner to get it back off so wipe it more than once. Buy an entire pack of new microfiber car towels just for this process. It's

Well if it's hydrophobic you can tell you have some form of protection on the vehicle. Because coatings last a long time the hydrophobic properties can diminish with the build-up of above surface contaminants, We recommend doing a coating maintenance detail once a year to remove all the tar, sap and iron particles that will build up. You can remove the coating with an aggressive compound and machine polishing.

Comment regarding one of the replies relating to scratches. My brand new vehicle had a long hood scratch after the first car wash. I thought the car wash did it. However, each time I brought it in, the scratch got longer. Obviously, the dealer waxed the scratch out. I had paid a premium for an upgraded paint. Upsetting. After I had my car detailed the scratch disappeared until I had it washed again. I thought my only option was an expensive paint job. I guess, having it detailed again, and then having either a ceramic or a wrap applied, makes sense. We are talking the lower hood. Very visible. Is ceramic or a wrap the best option. My neighbor had her hood wrapped halfway. The wrap itself looks good, but there is a very ugly line separating the wrapped part from the unwrapped part. A half hood wrap makes no sense.

i'd be after the dealer for that, they sold you a car that had a defect from the get go. while my little kona isn't something fancy, i've worked in automotive from body work, detailing, to repair. when i bought my kona in oct, i went over that thing with a fine toothed comb. some damage can be hidden, as yours was, i deliberately viewed it in different lights when i was going to buy it looking for something like that since i knew i wasn't the only one to test drive it(it was the only model of the trim i bought and had 80kms when i bought it). so if this was a recent purchase i hope you brought it up and go after them about it.

@@kellynnd5361 Unfortunately, it was several weeks before I brought it in for a car wash. Now 20 months later. I was not as diligent as you and really didn't look carefully. I'm sure I wouldn"t have noticed it. I had my car detailed last fall and the scratch completely disappeared until the next few washes. Detailing really makes it disappear. On the plus side, I was lucky and got a really good car. Everything is perfect on my Fusion Platinum which has every conceivable technological option. It should for a $ 41,500 list price.

@@paulstein9258 it's only because of my history that i am, plus replacing my old escape last oct. i didn't get a choice last time(it was used and a trade in at a dealership my hubby worked at, and i was in desperate need for a vehicle to get to work). with canadian winters and the amount of salt/sand used where i am... any potential loss of protection from scratches etc means rust fast. this time i bought new.. sadly she's already got a tiny dent from ice falling on it(mother nature hates me), from a storm that i'm keeping an eye on.

@@kellynnd5361 Dents? I always extra warranties and am ahead on those. I got Ford Triplecare which includes dent coverage up to the size of a quarter. Got a dime size ding. Dealer has an expert in dent pulling come every two weeks. Perfect after he repaired it. Supposedly the metal remembers. After a few months, the dent reappeared. Coverage is for 7 years. If I trade it, I'll have it fixed again. No deductible. FYI. The coverage also includes tire and wheel replacement. Helpful where you live. Glad I got it. Each wheel on my Fusion Platinum costs $ 1000. Shocking.

@@paulstein9258 this dent is in an odd spot, you can only see it at certain angles, barely dime sized. it's just below the middle of the drivers window, from the angle etc, it's from ice falling from above. it's really not that noticable, except to me, and not really fixable with the usual methods.

My friend ceramic coat h9 that is scratche resistance but not scratche proof is the hardest in moh scale (10 is diamond)needs sanding to take off after a few years because scratches dose not remove by polish or compounds or any chemicals,i don't know about the softer H4 or H6 therefore car mast be sanding that means that the factory paint will be thinner...and you can do this max 2 times the second time factory paint will be so thin that is forbidden even to polish the car,so be careful with this shit.if the car is close in garage and you brive it only weekends with good conditions then o.k but for every day use you may think twice before you put this on your car.

@chicago Auto Pros. Just wondering if you have heard of a ceramic coating called Zombie. My friend applies it and he does 10 coats. I have ceramic my car by using gtechniq. He brags about how his is better. But the cure time is he uses a heat gun to dry it then re apply thus really having no time gaps between layers. Just want to know your feedback.

A carmaker needs to make an option for a titanium nitride or silicon carbide coating for the whole car. No paint, just a titanium nitride or SiC coating. You can wash it with steel wool and it'll be fine 😂

The thing I hate is dropping your truck off to be ceramic coated. For all I know, he could have polished and waxed the damn thing. I hate to be a picky asshole, but I want to SEE what I'm paying for! It's hard to trust people these days. When the guy ceramic coated my truck. I got it back, looked at the roof and I knew he didn't do it because of clear coat scratches. I took it back and he admitted it wasn't done and blamed it on his crew. Got it back again and they did a half assed job. Scratches don't look as bad but they are still there. One day, I hope to find someone that really takes pride in their work.

Thanks for the coating series. I’ve seen some videos on internet with some scratches tests on ceramic coatings and I actually a little confuse of what they can offer. I have a new Mazda and the paint is terrible, and even when I try to do my best when washing, using mostly Meguiars products and towels, I still get more and more little scratches that are becoming a pain in the ass. It get scratches only at looking at it. I was thinking on a ceramic coating to prevent scratches, but now I’m not sure if it worst the investment. I’m on a budget, so I was thinking on applying Optimum Gloss Coat. What do you thing of this ceramic coating and what you recommend for prevent scratches on the terrible paint that my car has?

Just bought a new car a couple of days ago. Got the heavy paint protection service product. The salesman said it is not “ceramic” coating, and it was lifetime guaranteed. Any idea what that process might be? He wouldn’t describe the process, accept that his quote was not good if roll off the lot and didn’t buy it now. I know it’s car dealer bullshit, but the purpose of the question is to find out is there a more “permanent “ paint protection outside of ceramic coating? The one thing I will agree with he said was that car paint has been forever wuss-a-fied because of the environmental impact, thus not giving the chipping protection post 2012.

I'm not sure what this dealer put on specifically, but generally speaking, a dealership will put on a sealant of some sort. It's 6-month protection at best. The lifetime guarantee is complete BS, there is no product on the market that will protect your paint for a lifetime or that is "permanent". This is a numbers game to them, (did you read the fine print BTW) you probably paid thousands for the same service we charge $75 for. An entry-level coating Ceramic Coating will cost you $700 - $1,000 dollars and will last for about two years, A pro level coating will cost $1,200 - $2,500 and will last 5-7 years and that's if you are properly maintaining it. (again everything is relative here, you can spend $2 k for a coating and not take the proper steps to maintain it and it will be done in a year.) The biggest cost of doing a coating is the prep time, which again I can not speak of this particular dealership, but most will not do any prep at all, and most of the time you don't want them to do the prep because they guy doing the work is most likely not properly trained and will do more damage than good. Sorry to hear this man, Live and learn.

I figured as much. That’s why I didn’t pony up the G for it. He did say that it was not ceramic, but did not call it by name. I assume it was something else.
