You didn't talk about the time he was forced to live an entire lifespan as a member of a dead race, in the space of a few hours. He lived as a family man until his death in this alternate life, and became a musician. On his death in the alternate life, he woke in his real one, and cannot forget any of it. He is the last living repository of a dead spacefaring species' culture, and some of his hobbies, views, and reservations change as a result.

My father didn't usually watch Star Trek with me, but one Saturday he sat down and watched an episode of TNG with me. Dad retired as a full colonel at the end of 28.5 years of service. At the end of the episode he stated that Picard was one of the few fictional officers he'd seen that he would trust and serve with. He wasn't just talking sci-fi, either.

My theory of Picard's detachment from his crew is that he was so distraught by the loss of Jack Crusher, his 1st officer and best friend, that he consciously chose to maintain professional detachment from his crew moving forward. Which is why the only people he seems very close too on the Enterprise are Dr Crusher who is an old friend, and Guinan who saw past his cold exterior and went out of her way to become close to him. But 7 years into the mission he discovers that he does indeed consider the Enterprise crew to be his close friends and family and having seen a future where many of the crew aren't even on speaking terms he decides to change his ways. By symbolically joining the Officers poker game he is deciding to embrace the relationships instead of always maintaining his distance, and they happily welcome him to join the game.

It really parallels Patrick Stewart himself. He was a classically trained actor who spent his entire career on the stage and took his work extremely seriously. Most of the cast were Hollywood actors who were much more fun-loving and jokey than what Stewart was used to. The disconnect resulted in Stewart being detached and sometimes a pain to work with in the early years. There was an infamous incident where he yelled at fellow members "THIS IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE 'FUN'". But he eventually came around and embraced his new job. He became "one of the boys" on even made a career for himself in Hollywood. Something even he thought he'd never do.

Picard deserves more of an action hero rep. The man trains for and leads a black ops mission behind enemy lines in middle aged, during which he’s captured, tortured for more than a week, breaks before being returned to the Federation, and goes back to commanding the Enterprise like nothing happened. James T Kirk eat your heart out.

I don't remember a lot of DS9 and have yet to see Voyager or Enterprise (or the other new series), but I go back and forth between Picard and Kirk being my favorite captain. In terms of rank: as the commanding officer of the Federation flagship, shouldn’t he be a Commodore, or is that simply a Captain that has two or more ships under their command, without a Fleet Admiral?
@chrisortega75218 ай бұрын
A Captain of the flagship has seniority over another Captain if both vessels are needed. The Flag Captain would then technically be addressed as Commodore as they are the senior in command. This would likewise also be the rank given to a section commander in any star system that commands more than one ship but is not an Admiral.

I liked how they sidestepped it in one of the comics many years ago. Story was set before Unification, before Relics, before Generations. Enterprise-D was taking Ambassador Spock and Admiral McCoy to some diplomatic event - some planet they, Kirk, and Chekov had made First Contact a century earlier. Can't remember the actual plot, but two wonderful scenes... One is in Ten-Forward - McCoy says he'd be interested to see Spock and Data match wits in 3D chess. They throw down right there, with the board and pieces only in their minds! Drew a big crown that started taking bets. The other scene was McCoy and Spock discussing Picard and comparing him to Kirk. McCoy asks Spock something like which one he thinks is actually better. Spock doesn't give a definitive reply (maybe something about different times and different talents, etc...) and counters with something like "Perhaps the question you should ask, Doctor, is who you would want as Captain for some critical mission." McCoy looks it him and says, "I'd choose you. And if you tell anyone that - even your wife - I'll deny it."

I know this is old, If you ever update anything to this video, please pay attention that you mistyped the dates at the top of the Left hand column (viewer pov). You have them as 22 instead of 23. arbitrary timestamp is 5:33.
