That Shut Up And Train vid is pretty good actually, reminds me of the James Hawkins approach to Kenpo - Functional Kenpo he calls it, takes out all the bs and has fun doing it. @blackdll - The first step of that technique is to stand out of range, distance and timing is the first you learn. A jab or hook would never hit you due to the distance. Moving out or in the movement of your opponent is the second thing you learn. So it's still your choice to get touched or not. As getting hit by baseball-bat, the end of the arm (fist) is the thing you want to avoid to hit you with full power. So after holding your distance, the enemy has to move to you. Over the years of training you learn about his range and you learn, when his body is dangerous and which part of it. So being always out of range gives you the advantage here, makes the opponent less dangerous and brings him out of balance. Bringing the opponent out of balance is also an aspect you learn while training. The success of the opponent's move stands and falls with his balance, his range, his distance.... And while training you learn to avoid and break all this. ..... The grabbing (the only thing you see) is the last thing you will do. You grab the opponent, when is balance is already broken, when the power of his move is gone while the movement, when his hand/fist has come to stop the movement. ....... But this is something that will open your eyes only after some years of training. ........ It's like watching wrestling. The moves look hard at first, but when you learned to "read" somebody's movements, you will see how they land on their feet for a short moment, before they fall on their back and similar stuff. By the way: In 1:08 you can see, how Soke makes first a little step backwards (distance) and a bit to the side, before he even grabs and does his technique. It happens so little and so fast, you dont even realize it happened. The opponent does not see that, but it's always there.

I don’t doubt his technique or his martial arts abilities. These demonstrations look to rehearse or his students are larping hard. I don’t know about you, but I’m not holding on to a weapon as soon as any discomfort ensues. He just disarmed me. No disrespect, but the demonstration was just to slow.

the thing is, is that as soon as his student comes to attack him in any way and enter his space the technique is already done because he's already controlling the space and manipulates your body with either a hand or finger because he's connected to you and messes with your body alignment to brake your structure so no matter what you do he's already 10 steps ahead of you. In your mind your thinking of different ways of attacking him and you'll do if you had a sword and trying to cut him but his timing is so precise, he makes you think you got him but he'll move at the last second and before you know it your on the floor in pain or trapped

Went once with a friend to check it out. He's got some basic moves but mainly bullshido for the gullible foreigners. The first thing I noted, and as you can see here, there are mostly, as in over 90%, foreigners in his classes. The real Japanese, and foreign, martial artists know real from imaginary. Most of the techniques lack any real power....that's my personal opinion.

The schools of the bujinkan were used in feudal Japan, so it obviously works. How you practice in the dojo is always different from street fights. Most martial arts dont even punch at the head during training. They punch the the left or right, but they're not going to do that in an actual fight.
