Cleaning your gs500 is only kerosene or diesel fuel, and oiling is only heavy motor (or transmission) oil...anything else (wd40...)may damage the chain gaskets.

Got a question man I got the same bike is it bad to straight pipe these? Some people say it’ll mess my valves up

I agree it's easier, but freeplay is different on side and centre. I think if you adjust it on a centre stand, it might be too tight when it's on the wheels, what do you think?

@ around 7:54 you alligned ther chain. But you skipped the whole "aligning" part. Where do you correct the rear sprocket position (along the axis of the wheel) from? Anyway nice video, keep it going!

Align the chain and wheel u would just turn one of the ajustment nut opposite side you wanted to wheel or chain to go

Great video - to be honest I just wanted to find the torque spec, but wound up watching most of it. I haven't adjusted a chain in quite some time, this was an excellent overview of how to do it. Cheers!

I purchased one of those laser alignment tools and I'm glad I did. They are great at trouble shooting alignment problems.

Do you have to loosen the Left Side Nut at all with the Cotter pin?

11:17 Those hammer hits are to move forward the rear wheel and align it right? Because otherwise it is not possible to align the wheel of the GS500 by just touching the axle nuts and tensors

put a wrench between the chain and sprocket and wind up the wheel, that pulls the wheel forward god i hate those old gs adjusters...

Cheers for this fella, really helpful. Question for you, or anyone else! Is the swing arm the same for all the GS500’s? Looking at a 2003 arm for my 1994 bike. Thanks 🙏👍🍺🤓😊

I've always adjusted mine on the centre stand or a paddock stand always had enough free play when I put it back on the side stand. Plus you need to have the wheel off the ground for it to move when you adjust.

Nice Video...and good explanations...it works this way...but did you recognise that you have sprayed the lubricant also on the surface of the tire....this is dangerous. Better clean and lubricant directly at the rear sprocket.....

Been told to use plain WD40 to clean mine. Have always cleaned and then oiled mine with the engine running and in 1st but my fingers go no where near while in motion. I just use the full length of the nozzle extension when applying.

Whats the point of lubricating just one side of the chain anyways?

Diesel rusts the chain out badly. Use chain cleaner, wd40 or equivilant, or kerosene. It's the additives in diesel that rust it out. I thought the same I soaked my chain and sprockets in diesel and used it for cleaning. 2 months later my chain stretched right out and was rusted right out.

NEVER ever use a WD40 to clean the chain as it will destroy rings in it. Use kerosene or Motul (or other) spray cleaner instead. I use kerosene in small plastic spray bottle - safe, easy cheap way to do it. You can buy empty trigger spray bottle for a dollar on ebay and kerosene in any DIY store.

You could if you wanted to, it's easier to work with on the centre stand.

So you get the best life out of your chain and sprocket set. The straighter your chain runs on your sprockets the longer they last, because the chains runs where it was designed to on the sprocket tooth. Wearing out the sides of your sprockets does nothing except shorten the sprocket like and make noise.
