A small detail that's easy to miss if you're just referencing the chair on the website: the darkerthandark chair has a couple of nubs that extend above the backrest. They're black, which makes it hard to see them against the page background, but you can see the outline of one under the jacket/blanket and a pixel of highlight on the other one (you can also just view the sprite against a light background to see it). I don't think any chair we've seen has these. This doesn't disqualify town hall, since that's still the closest match, but it's worth noting. To me, “nubs” like those make me think of dining chairs in particular. If the Mayor's design sensibilities extend to her home, then what if it's a dining chair in the Holiday house?

so, i didn't find this out, and idk if they want me to share their discord name, but somebody on discord found out something about this page that's really funny but also hurts my brain it turns out that the chair page is kind of just an obscure reference to a really old AVGN video lmao... it's from a 16 year old video called "halloween (atari 2600)". he plays a weird obscure game for the atari about walking around a house in the darkness, and the character sprite in that game is literally identical to the eyes on the chair webpage, just white instead of yellow and pink i thought it was a coincidence when i first saw it, but then i kept watching, and there's a part where AVGN says "as the game progresses you can't see the walls. the game's gotten even darker, that's right, it's gotten DARKER THAN DARK" the fact that toby decided to hide a reference this obscure in something that's like genuinely important is just......... toby.........

I think the chair getting darker is simply an example of an object turning into a Darkner. Maybe an image from the future showing when the Mayor's office becomes a Dark World, there might be a chair-like NPC, but not necessarily an important character. It wouldn't be the first time we've seen a scene from the future of the game, since we had one right at the beginning of chapter 2.

I just realized something by looking at the chair sprite more closely. There are two little spikes that come out of the top of the chair. Maybe it's part of the chair, or part of the blanket, but what if it's something or someone that's hiding, maybe under the blanket ? It could just be Toby/the Annoying Dog, with the two spikes being the ears. Or maybe it's something entirely different that we've never seen before. Or maybe it's just nothing.

I am about to write three paragraphs about a chair in a videogame. May my ancestors forgive me. The ones in the hospital waiting room remind me more of the joint bench-like chairs you'd find in hospital corridors. I don't want to just assume that the mayor's office has similar chairs even if it makes sense, so that makes me dock points from that choice. I'm not gonna discount the chair in Rudy's room just because "one looks like it has a cushion and one doesn't" and "their hues of blue are slightly different" when Deltarune's art is famously inconsistent sometimes, and this chair is seen from a different angle, a different scale, and different lighting. The thing that especially draws me towards Rudy's room is personal experience. The blue of the "coat" heavily reminds me of the blankets you'd find in hospitals. Having had someone close to me hospitalised before (Nothing serious, no worries!), I have, in the past, spent a night or two on a chair in a patient's room with a plundered extra blanket before. Also, on another note, the whole thing with people hearing "darker than dark" and immediately assuming "dark world within a dark world" really annoys me. It seems obvious to me that "darker than dark" is a flowery mataphor for a dark world. We have no evidence that a "darker world" is even a thing. Queen seems to think that opening a fountain within a dark world would just expand the current one, and Ralsei, the person who knows the most about how the dark worlds work, never challenges that assumption.

Well she calls them neo dark fountains, and so does Noelle mention them, Toby uses the word Neo to name things New and “improved”, spamton Neo, Mettaton Neo, every thing that is Neo has been a better version of its last. So it doesn’t out rule the fact that this expansion may be a bit darker than the previous.

@@Genericspam_G Nope, Noelle never uses the term "neo dark fountain", and neither does anyone else. Not even Queen herself uses it before or after that one time. Furthermore, she continues that single use with "then another, then another", which wouldn't make sense in terms of sentence structure if a "neo dark fountain" is supposed to be a single term rather than it just meaning "a new dark fountain". It's most likely just Queen's technobabble quirk (As neo literally just means new, Toby didn't invent the word). There is, literally, not a single thing that points to there being a layer "beyond" the light and dark worlds that we see. I don't know why it's so prevalent in the fandom. Like, it is cool fanwork fuel, not going to lie, but there is no reason to bring it up when theorycrafting about canon.

I Love how Toby on one of the recent Newsletters said that making all the chairs on Kris's house their own characters one by one would be ridiculously tiring (something like that), and that's also one of my favorite things about Toby, he's always teasing us and making us go insane with details like that, and that also gives me hype for knowing what's gonna be on the chapters aswell, I just know Chariel and the Eyes (maybe Image_Friend) could be potential and amazing characters showing a great concept of these chair darkners, mostly the Eyes one for the Darker than Dark theme... (Also, I belive Cowboy Section is still there in Chapter 3, but that's not the case for a Secret Boss thing Imo)

I mostly associated this chair with the valentine's letter, when it says: "NOW PUT ON YOUR COAT AND WASH YOUR FACE! / OR PUT ON YOUR FACE AND WASH YOUR COAT. / NOT NECCESARIALLY IN THAT ORDER" (Dr. Wing Dings Gaster 1). Also, the closest reference that we have for it getting darker than dark within the game is when you are supossed to run around a circle to make the screen darker in chapter one, revealing a tree with a switch on it. Maybe if we could make it even darker, the tree's image would start shifting, just like the chair. Perhaps, being darker than dark reveals things that wern't there before, like the eyes that are revealed to us/the tree in chapter one? After all, only those blinded by darkness can see the way forward. 10/10 video, missed listening to you talk.

However, I do not like the idea of him being the egg man for several different reasons that ultimately don't matter to the conversation. I don't even really believe that Gaster wrote it, I just used him because I thought it was funnier for the mla citation joke. I believe the most likely candidate is _FRIEND. However, if it does end up being Gaster, I do think it can work if we read his character as becoming more and more incomprehensible over time. In the code of undertale, abc123 changed from being an anti-data mining message to incomprehensible laughter. If we account for writing on the wall theory (which I personally love + agree with), there is even more evidence for it. Combine this with mollystars device theory, and you get an incredible story/character arc for Gaster, all accomplished with minimal interaction from him. Anyway, under this thought process, the letter could be from a time before Gaster totally lost the ability to even speak or somehting, idk. The timeline seems hazy, but I think it could work. _FRIEND is the best option imo. But yes, you are correct. lmao

I personally think the chair might be a chair in the Holiday household that was originally for Dess. Since the entire Sweepstakes is focused around Noelle, I think this chair would have at least some relevance to her. The "Darker than Dark" bit might be alluding to the depths being where Dess is but I'm open for other ideas. I don't think we'll see the chair in-game since the sprite looks quite strange when compared to others we have seen so far

9:19 Something that intrigued me about this is the sepia-coloured map in the office. It's possible it's so old the town layout changed, but SURELY the big building in the bottom left is the church... except in the map it's right across the road from several buildings. This could be way off base, but I wonder if this is one of those clever double-meaning phrases that Toby Fox is particularly talented at weaving into his stories. (For example: Determination = staying determined, determining one’s fate, and de-termination/reanimating the dead). In this case, “what if things could get darker than dark” might be a way of alluding to how the story’s secrets will unfold. Whoever’s jacket that is draped over the chair, we already have a suspicion there’s some darkness lurking in their past and/or present, but maybe it all goes even deeper and darker than we imagined. To be completely honest, that’s how I feel about Undertale’s story. You think the lore is a lil dark when you get a neutral ending, then true pacifist takes some of the wildest, most horrific turns that no one could have predicted without prior insights. That sh-t was indeed darker than dark.

tbh, if you put the picture in paint and flip it upside down, it looks like theres a tower in a cliffside with 3 amongus looking shadow people at the top of it. or, it could actually be that youre seeing from behind someone, looking out of a screen at 3 shadowy people. And it looks like the head of a robot, like a super nintendo ROB, with a mask on its face or something made out of cloth. I dont think the chair is necessarily the actual object of focus though. When I thought chair theory I thought you would also bring up the inconsistency between Undertale Chariel and Deltarune Chariel. (In Undertale the chair in Toriels room is named Chariel, but in Deltarune it's her arm chair that's called Chariel.) when I first saw it I thought "oh, Undertale Chariel with a blanket." It's not tho. Undertale Chariel has slats like the dining chairs.
