Chaka is one of the most successful black female artists of all time. Since 1973 , she’s been highly influential musically and visually. She changed the game.! This song was written FOR HER by David Foster ( Whitney, Natalie,Barbra ect)… It was an instrumental called CHAKA. Her range, phrasing is genius. She influenced all your favs..Trust!

Hi Empress! I've loved this song since it was first released and Chaka absolutely kills it on vocals. It was written and produced by "the hit maker" David Foster (who also produced and wrote songs for Earth, Wind and Fire, Kenny Loggins, Boz Scaggs, Aretha Franklin, Al Jarreau, Chicago and many more) and he has said that when he was writing the melody he only had Chaka in mind to sing it and the working title of the song was "Chaka".

The first time I heard this song was when my mother or aunt (I forget which) bought the 'I Feel For You' album for me in the fall of 1984. "Through The Fire" wasn't my fire bop but it became apparent, quickly, that it was mom's. So much so I transcribed the lyrics so she could sing along (Chaka's albums rarely included a lyric sheet). And check out the album version. The video/single version edits out the best bits at the end.

Actually, Chaka Khan has said several times in interviews that she can't stand this song. She doesn't like to sing it. She says she was basically forced by her record label to record it because they wanted an 80's power ballad on her album. I've listened to Chaka with and without Rufus since 1973. I love so much of her work with Rufus, and her 6 or 7 solo albums are masterpieces. She has some independently released albums too. I've seen her live many, many times.

@@Johnny_Socko she didn't consider herself to be a top 40 artist. The best music she's done are the album tracks that never became singles. A lot of her music is not top 40 material. She sings unusual and rare songs, she sings a lot of jazz, she sings a lot of very syncopated music that would be difficult for others to sing. I saw an interview where somebody called her a dance music artist, and she became pretty offended.
