I found this after buying a slope recently. Mine needs work, but thankfully nothing major. You turned this one into something beautiful! 😍

Cotton velvet doesn't stretch and fray the way the synthetic velvet does. Your finished box for Auntie Charlotte is beautiful and I'm sure pleased your auntie no end. Well done!

That's lovely! There is not a better way to repair chippy veneer, imho. Also, it was not uncommon for writing surfaces to be covered in leather- cuts cleanly and is way less fiddly to install. Cheers!

Leather would have absolutely been the answer, sadly I couldn’t source anything appropriate in the time frame. I love the look of leather, next time 👍

You did an excellent job restoring this writing box. Its lovely!! I wouls say, if it had been me, I would have replaced the velvet with leather. It would give a firmer writing surface when using a pen. But you did a great job replacing it. CONGRATS on finding a key that worked and replacing the brass shields!!❤❤

Great work. Bought one exactly like this a few months ago with the ink bottles still intact. Getting up the courage to attempt the restoration. Thought i would source a nice soft red leather instead of using velvet again.
@flipitnation Жыл бұрын
Oh that’s awesome that the bottles are still intact! I did look into replacing with leather but was unsuccessful in my attempt to find anything suitable in my country in the time frame I had. Best of luck with your restoration, very satisfying to see the results of your hard work at the end!

I'm impressed. I was given a similar one of these several years ago and started working on it but gave up and sold it because I couldn't figure out how to deal with the missing velvet. Seeing how you did it makes me wish I hadn't given up on it.
@flipitnation4 ай бұрын
I promise I have been in that position many times. I’ve given up on quite a few projects in the past that I would find much less challenging these days, because of what I have learnt. I’m still not a professional and rely upon other restoring KZbinrs when I hit hurdles 😅
@perrych20126 ай бұрын
That looks lovely and I agree with your decision not to make it too shiny. But I wonder why you didn't use slightly smaller flat-headed screws for the hinges?

Just came across ur video. Great job on your first writing slope. They are something you either love or hate. The underneath of the box is normally covered in a material called Baize. Well done on finding a key, here (Cork, Ireland) usually either part of or all the lock is ripped out. Well done anyways 👍

I really liked your approach to patching veneer, which is something I find challenging. The box turned out beautifully. I did cringe when you took sandpaper to it - especially with veneer. Why not chemical strip and clean? It probably had a shellac finish which is easy to remove.

I needed a box for my MTG stuff and I had a wooden wine box. I varnished it and it had dark brown stain in it. Then I took gold craft paint and painted it. When it was dry I took a damp cloth and rubbed away the paint in places. Then I lined the inside with paint and put a new handle on it. It originally had a rope handle. It turned out great!!

Nice work. Maybe next time when you use glue use the masking tape to avoid messy spilling. I like simplicity of your work and unconventional but effective cover-up any little mistakes. Keep doing what you're doing and we all learn from mistakes so next time we know what not to do. 😊

Beautiful work. My one minor criticism is that you used Philips head screws for the hardware. It costs more, but you can still get slotted solid brass screws instead of made-in-China plated brass ones.

Next time use an upholstery spray glue as it will not stain your material. But make sure that after use, you turn the tin upside down and press nozzle til it runs clear. Otherwise the glue will dry in the nozzle and you will never get it to work again. Also look up back tacking strip and its uses on upholstery channels
@jebsails2837 Жыл бұрын
Nice restoration. Perhaps its the camera, however the brass screw heads appear to stand a bit proud. You may to able to use a wider counter-sink or drill bit for a flush fit. Thanks Narragansett Bay
@JoshYoung-l3g7 ай бұрын
Do you have any idea around how old the box may be?
@karendooks62449 ай бұрын
I would of cut a piece of good quality card and spray glued the velvet to that, with a little turn over the edges, then glue the velvet card to the box, doing away with the gold trim
@opticaltrace4382 Жыл бұрын
Just a small point but the attention is in the details, right?.... Consider in future using period correct fixings. This to me was spoilt slightly by the use of Philips head screws.
@cathybenson5119 Жыл бұрын
Mate, why don't try a rotary cutter to cut the velvet. You can buy one from a store that sells patchwork fabrics. They are sharp n you have to make sure that you close it after each cut. You will need a ruler to keep your cut straight. Have a good one. 😊😊🇦🇺🇦🇺

That box was straight grain walnut Should not use mahogany stain too dark Use wire wool to polish brass or it will look over restored. Colour out new veneer. Apply final wax finish Use slot screws for brass work , never cross heads Cut new indents on flaps with tilted router velvet or skivers will fit in better Try using animal glue white glue PVA is too tough
@flipitnation10 ай бұрын
I do this as a hobby, it was a huge learning curve for me. This was the first and last writers slope I’ll attempt but cheers for sharing what you would do differently. I’m sure they will apply to other pieces in the future.

If you have a Dremel or other rotary tool, use a METAL CUT-OFF DISK to cut new grooves into metal. In this video, I saw that you used a wood saw on metal. That does not work well.
