Been a big fan of Valdez since early on in his career. He is a true Mexican warrior in the ring and proved it against Scott Quigg when he won with a broken jaw! A lot of people wrote him off after the Shakur and Navarette losses and even said he should retire. Glad he is a champion once again.

This is what I have loved about his left hook. As shown here, the TELL is INTENTIONAL to force you to confuse yourself. It works as a feint, but in reality, is part of his motion. He can decide where to land as the opponent adjusts. The best tactic is USE YOUR FEET and move away to the left with a foreman-style crossguard or something skin to that. Cover the face and the cheek as you are on the way out. Because he throws everything into that punch, and plants his lead foot so heavily, anticipation and controlled movement can evade the punch, Stevenson, yes, he is another level, and defense and avoiding shots, even by catching them, is his goal. He wants you swinging air, but he showed that just a nice half step timed right can avoid it. Valdez has scary accuracy with that punch, so movement is the way to go. That or you need to CATCH IT. Knock it down, but few Valdez opponents, if any have or will be confident enough to do so. It is that good, and it is or should be the MAIN concern of EVERY Valdez opponent 3:39

I don't watch boxing that much, don't know of all its history. First time I've seen this boxer and I couldn't really figure out his hook. I wonder how I have nerver heard of him before as he has such an impressive footwork. I would rank his hook first because it's scary strong and one can't really predict it coming.

@Mobri5 ай бұрын
That is the nastiest hook I've ever seen in my life. It shouldn't be possible to be that fast AND hit with strange timing at odd angles. He actually shifts his body back, or rotates away, to get the distance he needs to unleash a haymaker at closer range. It's so dangerous with a stance change and if he's retreating with nothing at his back, that punch will make you pay for overreaching. You think he's gonna wind up a right and then a shattering left hook hits you where you didn't expect it. In the final knockout you could tell that the other fighter had absolutely no idea a punch would come that fast, that hard, from that angle. Not because it isn't possible, but it's just not STANDARD. Being able to make adjustments to the distance by shifting your body and rolling your shoulders makes it impossible to predict the trajectory. I've just never seen it so FAST.

Good breakdown! It’s almost like he’s throwing a check hook because a lot of time his opponents are moving forward when he throws it. Also on a lot of them he slides his rear foot to the outside of his opponent lead foot and throws it all in one smooth motion. Like you said, it’s like Tysons jump shift, like he did against Buster Mathis, but not as extreme with the foot shift. But at contact he’s pretty square and that shot lands flush.
@TheModernMartialArtist5 ай бұрын
Yeah when he stays put to counter rather than step forward it is like a more closed off check hook, he pins the foot rather than side stepping like Floyd. Good eye!

PEDS don't make champion fighters....except for Bob Sapp. Bob Sapp couldn't strike, grapple or clinch he just waved his tree trunk arms at people and threw them around like free weights...until a much smaller man (crocop) decided to not be intimidated by a 400lb man with abs and blasted him with a straight that aerosolized Bob Sapp's right orbital and left him crying on the mat. TLDR CroCop was fucking awesome.

@ndalby51785 ай бұрын
his hook is like a slider in baseball. maybe a cutter or something faster, but movement, violent movement. the fighter anticipates the straight, then they fear the opening to the side of the head, and at that point... BAM. Left hook to THE FACE. Pinpoint accuracy. It is a pitch with insane MOVEMENT. Very Golovkinesque 1:32

He may be left handed. As a lefty who fights conventional, my go-to counter for jab is a dragging left hook. All trainers tell you not to drag your hooks, but I also found my dragging left hook to be my best weapon. Left hook counters to jab are great. Once your opponent is conditioned to avoid them, you change up to a straight right counter.

@quillanjacobson14785 ай бұрын
Valdez absolutely has one of the best hooks in boxing, but i’ve noticed that’s also his greatest weakness. Against Shakur specifically, oscar couldn’t get to him. He needed to have good feints and straight punches against the lengthier guy but nope. It was hook after hook. Shakur could just pull out of range over and over leaving Oscar to hit nothing but air. The same would have definitely helped against Navarrete too, having only 1 great punch is just too predictable at the highest level.

Hmm. I've been thinking about a formula for maximizing defensive movement while maximizing offensive power. This may be an example of it. I call it Attack From The Back. Meaning, if you are primarily aiming to land shots with your rear hand, you will move around more, making you more evasive, and it will always add more power without having to try as hard. It turns footwork directly into offense. It also develops laser accuracy because you won't have a choice

It’s basically a cross… but he pivots his torso. Very common when both throw this punch and usually one hits and one gets hit. But yes, the pivot allows the contact point to occur at the forward point of the punch and not to the side like a traditional hook. Interestingly, he does not have any head movement. This punch usually draws the head off the center line naturally as the punch connects and the shoulder is centerline.
