How long before that drain is full of leaves and mud? How often do you pull that flat drain to clean?
@benjaminreinhardt2593 жыл бұрын
No need to use a fernco for the cutting in that wye. You can use a repair coupling - it is a PVC coupling with no socket bottoms. You slide it onto one pipe, put everything together, and then center the coupling on the joint. Not criticizing your work, I've watched a handful of your videos and you do good work. Appreciate you sharing your work with us.
@GCFD3 жыл бұрын
How do you get the repair coupling in place before the glue holds it? I’ve never been able to pull that off.
@benjaminreinhardt2593 жыл бұрын
@@GCFD Let me preface this comment by saying I'm not a plumber. BUT, I've done my fair share working on the house. It's drain pipe, so it will never see pressure. I prime the coupling, slide it onto one of the pipes, make up the other joints, prime the pipes, spread glue on the pipes, and slide the coupling into place. No glue on the inside of the coupling, again no pressure. Make a mark on one of the pipes at the face of the fitting so you can center the coupling up on the pipe. I'm no pro, but that has worked for me on the drains in my house and the gutter drain pipes out in the yard.
@nathanlothamer4570 Жыл бұрын
Why do you not add cleanouts to the downspouts?
@GCFD Жыл бұрын
Because the rectangular downspout into the round coupler leaves enough space to fit a snake or jetter hose. If I have a request for a cleanout I will install a wye and male adapter+plug. They do look very industrial though.

Would you use a channel drain like in the video along side a sloped, curved and downhill gravel driveway that also has a lot of water run off? On a second note, I sand the end of the outfall and spray paint it with a like color to the surrounding to give it a more natural look.
@GCFD3 жыл бұрын
A lot of homeowners do that and I recommend it!
@jrooney583 жыл бұрын
Nice to see you use a channel drain that way. I’ve done that before and found it to work well. The discharge on the round catch basin seems to be rather high. I get it that a high placement helps with fall, but aren’t you going to have a lot of water trapped in the basin after the rain event? Do you drill holes in the bottom of the catch basin to allow it to escape?
@GCFD3 жыл бұрын
Yes we drill holes or sometimes fill with concrete to the outlet pipe.
@alanostner3 жыл бұрын
@@GCFD I fill with Conc too. Our clay soils don’t drain when I drilled more weep holes.
@weejohnbb3 жыл бұрын
Why does the water pulse like that from the outlet at the rip rap? 15:30
@GCFD3 жыл бұрын
I don't know why it pulses like that. I see that on almost all the outfalls.
@ThierryC23733 жыл бұрын
That's because there is no air vent in the system, so water accumulates at one point in the circuit, then pushes until it flaws in cycles.
@GCFD3 жыл бұрын
@@ThierryC2373 I wondered about that but all the connections to gutters are open so I wouldn’t expect a venting problem. The pipes are not full either.

Hi Shawn so do you make a map of pipe installs for every property just for future reference ?
@SlackerU4 жыл бұрын
He should make a few to destroy the corrugated delusion, & the maps should show manufacturer GPM ratings for every chosen product to ensure every inch of 4in pipe is maxed out for the situation. There is a company here with pics online showing 18 4in grates for three 4in pipes using 4in popups.
@GCFD4 жыл бұрын
Hey We've found it easiest to lay the pipes out and spray paint our trenching lines. It's funny that things do change as we are working on a project. On this particular project we discovered a better line going under the deck - Less digging, less yard disturbance, even though we couldn't get the trencher in there and had to hand dig it. My helpers all feel free to question my plan and very often they make things better as in this case.
@Matlockization2 жыл бұрын
That pipe that went under the house I though was odd. maybe could have been redirected to the edge of the roof or have a shorter pipe drain on to the roof. It seems to me that most of these water problems stem from roof water flowing into a level backyard.
@Chase_C3 жыл бұрын
Why does the water seem to surge out of the outlet?
@GCFD3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure! A lot of these pipes do that whether they have high or low flow.
@SlackerU4 жыл бұрын
10/10, The only suggestion I'd make is to take advantage of that woods-discharge area & eliminate the catch-basin-maintenance, & any standing-water issues in the CB, by filling it with concrete or something. Instead of cleaning the bottom of the CB the debris-maintenance would be at the discharge. Similar to how sewers are done in Europe. I like my low-profile NDS #1230 far more than the #1200 b/c crawfish & other bugs don't get trapped in them.
@GCFD4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice Bob! I've been looking for a lower volume catch basin so I will look into the 1230. I talked to the customer the other day and she's very happy with how the system is working. She no longer has water eroding her side yard and walkway. There is no longer water flooding the back yard.
@bcwindowcleaning73604 жыл бұрын
Just drill holes in the bottom of them to drain the water when not raining. Lesrned awhile back these catch basins are necessary to help filter out the debris that gets sucked into your system.
@SlackerU4 жыл бұрын
@@bcwindowcleaning7360 I understand that method but in my situation I discharge into my own yard more than 25ft from the public-ROW so using the CB as a filtering device is unnecessary. Before I filled my CBs I experienced smells from dead-native-crayfish & chopped-yard-debris that went anaerobic with a pile-of-dead-worms smell. Now I don't scoop any of that & simply rake it all up in the discharge area.

Do you ever run into legal issues concerning the diversion of surface water?
@GCFD3 жыл бұрын
I never have. Homeowners are not responsible for surface waters flowing off their property. But you can't discharge onto another property.
@bcwindowcleaning73604 жыл бұрын
What about the debris from the gutters? Leaf guards or whatever peps use not 100% and there's no wash out or way to flush it. I got charged 4 grand and the sob still flooding my garage in the back. Seems the connection at the ends of my gutters need a vent. Serves two purposes, flush the crap from roof and to help vent the water flow so I dont get rotten eaves bc my gutters aren't draining fast enough.
@GCFD4 жыл бұрын
Yes! I insert the gutter into a coupler so there is space around it. This allows for venting and allows space for a snake or jetter hose to be inserted. I also install 4" cleanouts if they request, but this gives a more industrial look. By properly sloping the pipe everywhere the next rain will blow out the debris that may have collected. I design these systems to be self cleaning. I also keep up with my customers, especially by texting them after a hard rain and so far no problems.
