Nostalgia Critic. You fail to mention that the main reason the second movie sucks Its because they ruined the ending of the first movie. They only adapted the first half of the book, Bastian didnt came back on Falkors back, he had to find his way... When they change that, they removed the motivation for the second half, they were forcé to divert from the source material and by doing so they fuck up the logic of the rest of the story. It was the end of the first movie that killed the franchice.

Carlos F. Campos Urteaga At least the sequel did as well as it could with what was left. The thrid flim... didn't...
@TheOnlyTherazan8 жыл бұрын
A great problem also, is that they keep plot points of the book like losing memories, but none of the meaning they had. For example, Bastian lost his memories because, while wishes are the appeal of Fantasy, losing his self and sense of reality is the danger of it, and they can't be taken apart. In the movie it's reduced to a villain's gimmick rather than being the nature of imagination.
@Engel9908 жыл бұрын
Carlos F. Campos Urteaga They could have ignored that and picked up the story when Moon child and Bastian shared the peck of dust that grew into Perilin. It was just a silly ending all in all. They could even have it all explained why Bastian looks different or even the golden eyed commander of wishes. To even think about it how they managed to fuck up the Never Story they could have totally ignored Bastian's adventures for part 3 or that stupid "tales of.." series and just finish the unfinished stories in the book. Oh my, look at my rant.

I don't really know much about Johnathan Brandis or his work, but I really loved his performance as the child version of Bill in the IT tv mini-series. If anyone doubts his acting ability when he is given a good role then I will point to his work in that as evidence of his abilities. His suicide was tragic, especially considering the reason behind it. From what I've heard, he was worried about his acting career going downhill due to his getting older and work was drying up for him. The stress got to him to the point that he took his life. That kind of burden is difficult for anyone in that position, adult or otherwise. If that really was the reason I can't help but mourn the loss all the more. Needless to say Hollywood potentially can be a truly hazardous place for child actors, sometimes even more so than it can be for adult actors.

@@trippcory I recall hearing from another KZbinr who reviewed THNS2 that the second movie was originally supposed to begin production right after the first movie came out with the same cast and crew. I suspect that from the fathers perspective the story revolves around the failing relationship between him and his son, the loss of his wife, dealing with life as a single parent and eventually with the disappearance of his son. When Bastion goes missing, there's no indication of how much time which has passed so in reality, all his father knows is that his son disappeared without a trace and no one has seen him on that day except for the sketchy book keeper who disappears shortly after. It sounds like a classical kidnapping. So now the father has to come to terms with the fact he might never see his son again and the police are likely scratching their heads. Media coverage may or may not have grabbed this story and has it on air. Until, all of a sudden, he shows up unexplained on the doorstep unscathed however many days or weeks passed. It's a good thing the credits rolled when they did or the rest would be a roller coaster in therapy sessions.

When I was younger, I liked this movie much more than the first Neverending Story, simply because first movie was darker and more disturbing (horse dying in swamp for example). But now, as adult, I like first one more just because is much darker and disturbing and clever. I have same issue with The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi. Hell, this movie is like another Star Wars prequel.

Interesting fact, they actually had Looney Tunes short, Box Office Bunny, attached to the theatrical release. It even joined it on its video release- they even promoted it as such on its cover. Unfortunately, it also started the Looney Tunes Curse- any WB film with a short on it would bomb. This had films like Richie Rich, Cats Don't Dance, and as recent as Happy Feet Two and Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls of Ga'hoole. The only films that have thus far avoided it were Yogi Bear and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, both being decent hits financially, if not quite so critically.

Loved the Neverending story (first one) and somewhat tolerated the other 2 growing up, picked up the book recently and was a little disappointed that movies 2 and 3 were just poorly made, still love the 1rst movie. Turns out all the movies are bits and pieces from the book but changed for some reason. Like the part when Atreyu was hanging was actually 3 out of 4 strong knights who swore to protect Bastion that got caught and tortured. There was another version called Tales From The Neverending Story i have yet to see it.

9:41 this is actually really similar to how I imagine how Superman could deal with his problems . I mean superman has godlike speed and strength , and Lex luthor is apparently a dastardly villian who causes a bunch of problems I guess . So , Superman could use his super speed to lex's building , and then clap his head , and boom hes dead , a huge threat taken down , and he could do that in less than a second in theory , and I don't care if superman doesn't want to kill , it still is bullshit like that scenario in never ending story 2 now that I'm really thinking about it !

True! Maybe if/when Spielberg does it he can "wow" us with those movie moments that make a Spielberg film become a classic (e.g., E.T. flying bike silhouette and full moon, J.P. T-Rex "rawr" moments, Indie Jones giant rolling rock, etc.). If it's whimsical, Steven can make it happen.

*Let me help you folks : Bastian's mother name was MOOOOOONCHHIIIIIIIIiiIIIIIILD! there you go, you're welcome* So , some people still think the first movie was the first Neverending Story ever ? Haven't anyone heard of the book ? .... If you want more after watching the first movie, then go read the book, it's even better and gosh do I love the movie! Also the second movie isn't THAT BAD regarding it took some elements of the actual book from the part Bastian in ACTUALLY REALLY ENTERING FANTASIA and the first city we see is the City of Silver . Well he doesn't fight in a arena and doesn't bump into Atreyu bc of that and there isn't fireworks to celebrate him and he doesn't watch it while holding Atreyu's hand , but yeah it's from the Novel, Xayide too. (yes the book is kinda weird sometimes, they do hold hands and you never know why. ) But they jumped a lot of shit , and also Bastian never returns to the regular world after naming the empress he actually stays in Fantasia with the Auryn and can wish upon the Auryn whenever he likes to like in the movie and that Xayide bitch just push him to do that for the same reasons as in the movie. But it doesn't end there. Spoilers if you actually want to read the book : Bastian goes crazy and think he's the emperor and wants to enter the Ivory Tower and just blow everything up and fights Atreyu and Atreyu nearly dies and still save him in the end. Atreyu is either in love with Bastian or too kind and a bit stupid. (Do I sound like a brat ? I do sound like a brat when I talk about books/movies adaptations)

Hey Critic, have you ever read the original book? For some reason it's extremely difficult to find (I happened to stumble upon an English edition at my university bookstore in Tokyo), but if you can, I HIGHLY recommend you read it. It more or less combines the plots of the first two movies into a deeply thought-provoking and utterly bizarre story that is definitely NOT for kids. I was 22 when I read it, and I found it completely baffling yet overwhelmingly satisfying. Definitely seek it out.

The kid from the first movie was not that bad. Imagine yourself being an actor at that age, I'd say he did pretty good. He was supposed to be shy and quiet and scared, so a nerdy withdrawn kid is exactly what he was supposed to be.
