Like...some people are just all kinds of light-hearted, to take their minds off of how stressful their lives otherwise are. Jennifer...came across as 100% genuine to me, and I feel betrayed that you didn't finish it, since the ending...was completely bonkers, and that's the one part I wanted to hear you speak your mind about, since IDEK how I feel about that part, honestly. As an MCU fan, She-Hulk Series (despite having some good things about it) is not that great. Talking about positive things about the show, I do like the She-Hulk character, both episodes 1&8 are the best episodes that it offers, it’s great to see Abomination again, the Norton joke in episode 2 is genus, Madisynn is a hilarious bad character, the fourth wall break are unique, seeing bootleg versions of The Avengers in episode 5, a nice nod to The Incredible Hulk series in the finale, I now ship both She-Hulk and Daredevil & Wong and Madisynn, and most importantly it’s better than Eternals because at least I feel more about the characters from the show then almost every character in Eternals. Other than that, She-Hulk Series is the weakest Marvel Disney Plus series, I’ve ever seen. There’s barely any action scenes, tease a character (Daredevil) that everyone wants to see but have to wait two episodes to have that character show up (that’s something that the Hawkeye Series didn’t do), where it takes place in the timeline can be confusing, no mention of either General Ross nor Betty Ross (someone that we haven’t seen in live action since Incredible Hulk), was looking forward for a Hulk and Abomination rematch which they didn’t go forward with it, and the finale didn’t live up to the hype from the ending of the last episode because it is the most anticlimactic episode I’ve ever seen (even with its ultimate fourth wall break which they should’ve waited until Deadpool 3 in a situation like when the world is ending in the Fox universe, so he gets himself out of the Fox Studios and walks to the Walt Disney Studios and asks K.E.V.I.N. to be in the MCU).

The problem was that the writers admitted they cared more about making fun of trolls over writing a good story. Which stinks, cause She Hulk is a fun character and Tatiana Manslany is a great pick to play her, but it just feels like they got the wrong team to write this show. Daredevil was fun though.

Back in the day I’d play Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and She-Hulk was one of my favorite characters to play. Her attitude and fun-loving personality was a good contrast to some of the other characters (granted most of them were quite serious, even She-Hulk at times). Also in Lego Marvel Superheroes, She-Hulk is great, and I do like the actress they picked in this show, and I agree with you that they squandered the opportunity to make Jen Walters come to life on screen to instead make it about themselves. We need quieter stories in the MCU, no ensemble casts. Make Iron Man 1 for She-Hulk, then throw her in with other characters. It’s like they want to take the easy way out instead of creating compelling characters, but in the long run, people will lose interest. They lack confidence in their abilities, and then pull in fan-favorite characters like Daredevil and handle them with the tact of a toddler with a chainsaw. They need to focus up, tune out the incessant politicking, and write good character.

This. Jen likes She Hulk. People close to her prefer Jen. Her story is about a woman growing into herself and becoming more of who she wants to be and naturally getting backlash from people who prefer the "old Jen" whether they have good intentions or not. The most important part of this is that Jen likes She Hulk more than anyone else on the planet and it's arguably the single most important part of her character. It's what makes her immediately different from her cousin.

My main problem with this show is that in the comics Jen is very chill. The meta jokes are more about her and what she’s comfortable with like not wanting to be shown nude. Here the meta jokes are only used to try and make people mad so they’ll get publicity online. It’s what’s called “rage bait” and that’s not what Jen was ever about. To take a chill character and make her all about wanting to piss off the audience is a disservice to both the character and anyone trying to actually enjoy the show. That’s why I hate this one.

Marvel Phase 4 has its really high highs, and REALLY low lows. This, is a really low low. And there's one major reason why. I'll let Theo from Haunting of Hill House explain it best "People f*** up. I guess you don’t get that, you don’t really get it until you f*** up. REALLY f*** up." Don't put characters on a pedestal. Challenge them. That's how you fix the writing issues in Marvel rn. Phase 4 focused too much on the agenda and the message and that's fine to have diversity, and something important to say. But if that's ALL your movie or show is, that's all people are gonna focus on. Too many characters especially the women of Phase 4 were used as role models, to be icons vs human beings. And here's the thing about being human: we're kinda trash. So you should show that. Not just in your villains, but your heroes too. As a woman myself, I found Jen INSUFFERABLE but not for any good reason, not like Allicent from House of the Dragon, who you hate but understand. I just DON'T like Jen. We don't need characters who are simply icons, and nothing more. We need characters who feel human, whom we can relate to. If you don't like the character, you won't like the story they're in. We don't need stories that hammer in the message, because that's when people roll their eyes. We need stories that have us analyze and think critically without even trying. If you outright say "hey we know our writing is bad" in your finale, that doesn't fix the problem, it just highlights the fact that yeah, your writing wasn't good.

Here’s what I have to say about you not finishing the show: That information coming from a critic is infinitely more valuable than anything else you could have said. When it’s your *job* to watch stuff and review it, but even this was too much, that says a lot. I’m a children’s librarian and while there is no way for me to read every single kids book ever published so I can honestly give kids reading recommendations, I do try to read as many as I can. And there are plenty that I get through ~50 pages and I cannot do one more word because it’s so bad. I don’t have the time to waste slogging through something that I hate. I will simply not recommend it, and I might mention that I tried it, but couldn’t finish it. That might not be exactly what’s going on here, but don’t apologize for not finishing a show or movie you hated. Even if it’s for a review. Like I said, that’s valuable information too.

Here's the thing: the bits you mentioned liking? Her working as a superhero lawyer, handling superhero cases, even just the thing about her getting drunk as She-Hulk but it only affecting her as Jen? That is all completely, totally, no word of a lie, lifted SCENE-FOR-SCENE from the comics, specifically a 12-issue series from 2005 nicknamed 'Single Green Female'. It's easily one of the best She-Hulk comic stories out there, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that maybe 80-90% of this show was lifted from those comics. The scene of her getting drunk happens in literally the very first issue, that's how heavily this show was based on those specific comics. The bad stuff, like the constant unfunny jokes, the random 4th wall breaking that makes no sense, Jen's childish personality despite her being a veteran lawyer? All added for the show. THIS is why people hated the show so much, not because they hate She-Hulk or hate women or whatever people claim... it's because it took one of the best She-Hulk comics (who was already one of the best female comic characters in general), copy-pasted most of it into the show, then added their own touches that made it worse. As in: imagine the only Batman movie you had was 'Batman & Robin', and everyone you knew walked around thinking that Mr Freeze did nothing but spew ice-puns and that Robin did nothing but whine and complain. AT LEAST they could have change it so the serum doesn't work, hulk king gets turned into a horrible blob that can barely move and is begging for his own death. AND Jen sure, gets her job back due to "catching hulk king" but when she ask if she can be she hulk again, she is told "NO. you can't transform into she hulk. that's what your parole. that had nothing to do with hulkking. you would have to look for a change in your parole at court" (the season 2 hook). ESPECIALLY if her own best friend happily says "just like you wanted. You never have to be she hulk ever again". I felt if they really wanted to show an impactful struggle for her, maybe have her neglected growing up so she had to learn everything by herself. So when she becomes She-Hulk, she wants to handle it herself. She can still have consciousness when she turns, but she can’t control when or how she turns. She’s been on her own most of her life so it’s hard to rely on her cousin. And instead of having her graduated, maybe have her entering law school or in her final two years of law school. She wants to be a serious lawyer and live a normal life, but her new powers keep interfering. But it feels the show would rather make fun of the people who don’t like the show or it’s humor.

This is the same issue I had with Thor 4: no one takes anything seriously. Even when something 'serious' happens, they're too busy making jokes to give it the proper weight needed to make me care when bad stuff DOES happen. I don't mind characters being upbeat and cheerful, but at some point, it starts to feel condescending. I know the argument is made that this is supposed to be 'for kids', but there's a reason I remember 'Arthur' far more than I remember 'Barney'. Even as a kid, I think I'd have gotten bored with all the jokes.

The biggest problem with this show is that She-Hulk is just a terrible lawyer. I'm not an expert on law by any means, but even I was dumbfounded by some of the choices she made (especially in episodes four and eight). Also, is it just me, or did they forget to explain how she's allowed to be She-Hulk again? I know they caught the criminal who released the sex tape, but if police catch the guy who robbed my house I don't think that gets me off the hook for torching my neighbors garden in blind rage.

Matt would never been seen in broad daylight with the suit on, and he would never get his suit made from some high profile fashionista, and he would never sleep with She-Hulk after his experiences with Elektra, Claire, and Karen (especially how Season 3 ends, it implies a rekindling of his relationship with Karen). This broke my heart to see. Daredevil isn’t interested in fame or fortune, his original suit was combat gear he bought online, and his second iteration was from a craftsman under the boot of Wilson Fisk who he mutually helped by creating the suit so he could take down Kingpin. He wouldn’t be seen as Matt Murdock, purchasing a suit from this goon. The moment the helmet was revealed in that environment my heart sank. The nail in the coffin was the writers not being able to keep it in their pants and having him sleep with Jen after one single day. He did that in his college years with Elektra, but he was young and stupid, and also… it was Elektra. He’s gained so much perspective and it’s shown in the episode where Karen invites him in after their date, and he refuses, explaining how the day had been perfect, and going with her would cause him to mess it up. That’s a severe level of emotional maturity, and it was not displayed in his depiction in She-Hulk. The one scene I enjoyed was Matt and Jen bantering at the bar, it was the best scene in the show, and the status quo in any single episode of Daredevil. If you want me to believe their relationship, then do the legwork and make me believe it. But as it stands, the ONLY thing Matt and Jen have in common is that they’re lawyers, and for Jen, even that’s debatable. All they had to do was a cameo, and somehow they managed to mess it up. The only praise I can give is to Daredevil’s writing in the episode, he spoke like himself, and Charlie is a true professional, and he did the best with what he had. The only way to get me excited for Born Again is if the original writers and directors and stunt coordinators from Daredevil come back to create it. Disney’s been throwing these meaningful projects to novices like Candy at a parade. I bet you they’ll try to carve out Matt’s religious angle as well, and next thing you know he’ll be killing, and he’ll just be Punisher without guns. You can’t just “have Daredevil.” You need to do your homework and do it right. He’s a nuanced character, and simplifying him is the biggest crime to come out of She-Hulk.

@AJraxUltima I’m not saying it’s not plausible, and I’m not saying they’ve broken canon, I’m just saying from a character perspective, he’s always very protective of his identity, and I don’t think he’d go to a high profile fashion designer. He’s not a vain man. He dawns the devil suit because it’s the name that was given to him, he embraced the role, but he didn’t choose it. Going to a fashion designer, albeit with resources and tech to make the suit block bullets and knives and stuff, just doesn’t sit right with me. And you’re right, nothing was confirmed after season 3 regarding Karen, and Matt was not good for her, despite his best efforts he hurts the people around him, which is why in season 3 he realizes that’s no way to live, and he, Foggy and Karen all grow closer because of it. I’m not opposed to a relationship between him and Jen, but they rushed it and it feels like the character has been violated. They didn’t make me believe that he’d do that. After his life experience, he seemed more guarded with his heart by the end of season 2. But calling the fashion designer from she hulk a deep character is laughable at best, the show is filled with unrelatable caricatures to the point where when they interact with a real one in Matt Murdock, it drags him down to their level.

I'm glad you touched on the character depiction, most reviews I've seen focus on the writing as a whole but the character disappointed me most. Marvel has come out with a new SheHulk comic series that is really worth checking out. I think she's an interesting character because she's shown as being able to project confidence and seems to genuinely be comfortable in her own skin but is also nervous at the beginning because she questions her capabilities as a lawyer, feeling like her time as She Hulk might have set her back. In the show she just felt either bitter or overconfident and never seemed to like taking responsibility for her part in things.

The thing about the show is that while it has quite a few good moments, it is average at best. There is just so much potential for the show to be even better, like getting writers who actually know how to write court dramas and court sitcoms. Also take full advantage of the fact that She-Hulk is a lawyer dealing with the law and the implications of living in a world that is filled with superhumans, aliens, etc; ask the questions of how does the justice system evolve to incorporate those things, expose corruption, Jen fully coming to terms with who she really is. Maybe a little less of the fourth wall breaks, I mean yes she did that a lot in the early comics, especially when it came to dealing with things that she was inconvenienced with or the writers double standards. Like the infamous time where she berated the writers and the audience when the writer made her jump rope completely naked, or the time where she had to get somewhere so she just walked past the panels to the location. At the rate of the 4th wall breaks in the show as it is however, it was like you are just waiting for Deadpool to knock on her door and challenge her in a court of law because he accused her of stealing his schtick of 4th wall breaks.

What I love about the show is it knows exactly who their pissing off and how to piss them off even more So I’m not surprised that this show got a lot of hate. ALOT of people already made the decision to hate this show before they ever saw it, and nothing less than a masterpiece could have changed that (which this show isn’t)

One thing I just couldn’t take in this show were the supporting characters. Not the MCU cameos. But Jen’s friends and people she comes across through her job. Without a shadow of a doubt the most instantly forgettable supporting cast in the MCU. Didn’t find any of them funny or remotely memorable. Genuinely could not tell you a single one of their names. They all felt painfully pointless.

@@Phanthief95 things, like him walking around in broad daylight with the suit on for a cheap joke. It puts the people he loves in danger. People talk, maybe someone says “hey I saw Daredevil leaving Jen’s house, who was she with last night? Oh she was with Murdock at the bar? Interesting… he would never risk something like that. The writers clearly wanted to make this happen for a visual gag. Also ordering his suit from a big name fashion designer is not his MO. Again, he keeps a low profile, he wouldn’t go to some big-wig, he’d keep it a closed arrangement, with very few eyes involved. Also he had a one night stand with Jen, after meeting her hours ago, and the only thing they have in common is that they’re lawyers. It’s just a bastardization of the romances from the main series, which are handled tactfully and with nuance. At this point in his life after all he’s been through, I don’t think he’d be so reckless. The writing was solid, and he spoke like himself, but his actions were that of a different person. It’s hard to explain, but I’ve seen Daredevil three times over, and Defenders twice over, and these things clashed with what I know. I recognize he slept with Elektra on a whim, but he was young, and in college, and Elektra was “the one.” She understood him like no other. Jen and him, I just didn’t buy. I liked the scene of he and Jen talking at the bar, it was the best scene in the entire show in my opinion, because Matt was working his charm, Jen was clearly buying what he was selling, but they should’ve left it at that, and if they wanted to do a romance between them, they needed to build it up and make me believe it. But they rushed it. They just made it happen to make it happen. It doesn’t deepen the characters, it doesn’t serve as any growth for Jen, it’s just a thing that happened, which makes me question why it was included.

My biggest problem was the ending. She didn’t earn the level with which she broke the 4th wall at the end. Throughout the show, all she did was talk to the camera once or twice an episode. If she broke the 4th wall in bigger ways as the show went on, the ending would have been more ok, but she was at level 1 for 90% of the show and then suddenly at level 10 right at the end so it was just jarring

Frankly, I have a lot to say on this and similar shows, but I'll keep it simple. 1. I feel like modern "Representation" media is designed to insult the targeted demographic and pit them against the group that are supposed to be represented. Possibly for a create a problem but sell a solution type situation. 2. Marvel as a whole is about going beyond yourself to help others when you have the ability to do so. Sure, I can come up with scenarios where that can be detrimental, but the franchise creates some great stories and characters that exemplify this way of thinking. She-Hulk is not one of them and is in fact the opposite. 3. A person being given powers and just wanting to live their normal life is fine as a story and can be interesting if written right. But this show feels more like a power fantasy than a tv show, which is far from Marvel as you can get. 4. I feel like Disney is hiring writers to do shows like this because they know that there is money in politics and representation. Especially when you can accuse your critics of some form of ism. Which is again as far from Marvel as you can get. Basically, "Media Representation" is a scam. 5. Even outside of the politics, this show was pretty much anti-Marvel. It is immature, uninteresting, self-absorbed, and unpleasant. I would prefer a Marvel TV show written by, directed by, and starring the Jersey Shore cast.

And just to be clear, I'm not against shows or movies about the experiences or struggles of women, in or outside of the professional world. Or ones where they are superheroes or super powered people. I did have a problem when She-Hulk berated Bruce over her own experiences, angrily claiming she could control her anger better than him, while not even acknowledging what he's been through. If you have to put down someone, and negate their own history and struggles, just to tell your own story, it makes me lose any sympathy I have for you. That's why I called this show immature and self-absorbed.

One of, if not the biggest, problem with the show is it was sold as a lawyer show but the writers admitted they had no idea how to write court scenes. The writers were completely wrong on every level for this show. They'd be better at a Girls or wish version of Sex and the City. The general idea of the show could have worked if the had competent writers. Every other thing could have worked, including the set ups for the general plot, if they had had good writers.

I guess I mostly agree with some of the stuff he says except for maybe 2 things: 1) The main character (while kind of annoying at times) is not that bad. 2) The Daredevil episode was wasn't that bad. I'm impressed that Charlie Cox was able to reprise his role with such a straight face in this kind of weird thing. Also he didn't mention Tim Roth as Abomination.
