My lord, I've finally found it. When I was six, I got up and went to my parents room because I had a nightmare (which was pretty common for me at the time). They let me sleep at the foot of their bed, but instead, I started watching the movie playing on TV. All I could remember was it was about a guy in a coma who went to this scary underworld. It was the source of my nightmares for months, and I still remember it to this day, but I didn't know the title. "Monkeybone". Who'd have thought?

I have to strongly disagree with you at around 9:53 because he is a good actor. If you seen Gods and Monsters, The Quiet American, With Honors, and Crash, he can do drama very well. This movie, for me anyway, is like "Coolworld" where it could have been really amazing and thought-provoking, but ended up falling flat after too many rewrites. I used to own this movie and remember hearing on the audio commentary that the film was originally going to focus a LOT more on S. Miley's (I see what you did there, movie) time in Downtown. It was his own personal limbo rather than a mass coma waiting room, and every resident there was somebody he'd thought up/drawn (which they briefly touch on in the movie but only for like, a minute). The rest of the movie is him dealing with the world around him and coming to terms with himself. I don't know if the story would have been any better in practise, but we'd at least get more Downtown visuals, which is the best part of the movie.

6:15 That's Homer as Krusty!
@realshow6897 жыл бұрын
Small trivia, Krusty was initially going to be nothing more than Homer's alter-ego. That's why they look so similar.
@lovelyheiferdev7 жыл бұрын
Realshow Interesting, wonder why they scrap that aspect of the series. Would've been fun.
@guyincognito80437 жыл бұрын
To address the "alter-ego" thing, I believe they just didn't feel like it after a while, and scrapped it. Not unlike the "Marge's ears" thing. They did say that Bart's hero is Krusty, and he has no respect for his father, so they thought it would be an interesting dynamic. I'm glad they didn't do it; I think it would've gone down as a ""Principal and the Pauper".

I don't know why but I am baffled that the title of a movie, that seems to want to be taken seriously, is "Single White Female". I would expect that type of name to come from a comedy. Then again there are worse titles of movies. In fact, I'm making a movie and the title will be "Engaged Asian or maybe Indian Hermaphrodite".

This was made by Henry Selick, who was the true director of Nightmare Before Christmas. And despite his acclaim, this movie was a box office bomb. I can kinda see why. At least Selick went on to make Coraline which is a much better bizarre film. Also I kinda like the closed captions of this episode since it gives a bit of its own snark.

From what I heard, Brendan Fraser is a lovely and funny guy in real life. That's why he keeps getting work. Hell, Ben from Scrubs was created for him. He's also not a bad actor. Guy is charming and inoffensive.

Oh god, Monkeybone... It's a movie I forget exists quite often, but still can never truly forget it. It was such a strange movie that made no sense. I agree Brendan was a big miscast. He doesn't fit the role. He's one of my favorite actors. Not because of his looks, per say. He does make weird faces when firing a gun, which I've affectionately called "Brendan face". While I do like his acting, there's just something about him that seems... kind. His eyes seem honest and compassionate. Of course I'm not sure if he's actually a nice guy, but I've always had that feeling about him. I've heard good things about him, though. But yeah, to me, he's a lovable goofball who was amazing in The Mummy trilogy and Inkheart. He's always been one of those actors that goes under the radar. No real scandals or headlines. He just does a role, then moves on. It's only when the new Mummy movie came out that people started to have Brendan-mania. And for good reason.

Ok. So here is a short story. I was 8 years old when this movie came out, my Dad was flipping through channels and he came across this movie and I watched the scene where Brenden Fraser's character gets possessed by Monkeybone. I remember being completely weirded out by just watching parts of this movie and years later that creepy orange creature (I forgot it was even a monkey until today) had weirdly slipped into my subconscious. Sometimes it would haunt my childhood dreams (similar to the IT creature, except I have never been to Derry so I was safe) and I had legit NEVER seen a rerun of the film, despite my best attempts of looking and scanning the channels over the years. Now today, after 16 years, I have finally found out that this movie is just purely weird for the sake of being weird BULLSHIT. Childhood version of me has finally solved the mystery of the creepy orange monster movie. Thank you Nostalgia Critic. And I swear to god this is a true story!

The Brendan Fraiser's only short comings are that he's not a goofy looking doofus like others, and he likes to take artistic attempts and risks instead of just going for cookie cutter roles. He has a nice natural charisma, and yeah, the guy is good looking and likes to stay in shape. Then, just like how the critic did here, he's judged for being too good looking for his roles and stuff. The Mummy is a good example of roles he should take. Serious but always with a hint of comedy. That's his niche.

Or maybe it’s just that he was never good or funny to begin with, but since he’s the only KZbinr who regularly reviews 90s movies, people come to watch him even though they know they’ll be disappointed
@VideoGuy2324 жыл бұрын
GOODFILMS Not really. I like that he basically shows the stories of movies that I watched when I was younger. So it’s really the movies I come to watch for. I can never make it through his commentary though. His critical insights are superficial and poorly communicated. He says that things “just don’t feel right” a lot. Like he doesn’t even understand his own opinions. And his humor and comic timing are terrible and mostly involve exaggerated faces, poses and tones followed by a mistimed pregnant pause and then a jump cut. And he always includes some poorly thought out backstory that adds nothing to the video nor the movie he’s reviewing. I wind up watching one of his videos after looking up the trailer for an old movie thanks to KZbin’s algorithm. I watch him so infrequently that when I see him in my recommended I think this time it might be better, but I always wind up disappointed. Kind of like most of the nostalgic movies he “reviews”

Is it bad that I loved this movie for years and it actually helped a great deal during a really hard time? Contrary to the critic's tirade, I actually related to Stu a lot. Not to mention it isn't done half as horribly as he describes. This is the kind of movie where if something is unexplained, it only gives further grounds as to why everything is so messed up. If you look into the production history, a lot of things will make much more sense. Admittedly though, a lot of things do get lost im translation.

I have to recommend watching this with subtitles on. Whoever did this made the review even just a bit better. They still put in what was said faithfully, even admitting when they weren't sure, but the occasional commentary was hilarious as well. Whoever did that, good job. I enjoyed it.
