Spoiler Alert. Things missing from the book: 1. There is a thing called the Mist, which prevents normal mortals from noticing the Greeks gods. 2. Percy is a hilarious protagonist with all the one-liners. 3. The mission is to get Zeus's lightning bolt back from the Underworld, but Percy is only really going to save his mom. 4. The pearls they're searching for in the movie were just given to Percy in St. Louis in the book. 5. Sally stays behind in the Underworld, while Annabeth and Grover only try to sacrifice themselves to save Sally. 6. Percy has a fight with Ares, not Luke, at the end of the book. 7. Percy can talk to horses. 8. Capture the Flag was more fun in the book and Poseidon claimed Percy as his son when it was finished. 9. Percy was twelve, not sixteen. 10. Percy was given the quest by the Oracle and left Camp Half-Blood in full view of everyone. He didn't need to sneak out. There is more, but these were the biggest inconsistencies to come to mind. I'm not saying the movie was perfect, far from it, but please, read the book if you want the whole story. I'm afraid the Critic's mean-spirited critique toward one of my favorite book series might be turning people away. Also, leave Harry Potter alone. He doesn't deserve to be yelled at and abused by the Critic.
@revstalker7334
@revstalker7334 4 жыл бұрын
Also, why people aren't using guns: Magical metals. The weaponry in the series is made from specific types of metals that are the only thing that can hurt the mythical beings of the books. In the half-blood camp the most common is Celestial bronze, thought there are others. And vice versa, these don't work on mortals.

I know I've never read the Percy Jackson books myself, nor have I seen the movies, but I'm glad to see someone defending a book series they know and love so well. Respect! :) I will say that it's the Critic's job to review movies, not the books, so I am kinda split on how he should review movies based on books. I mean, if he's not interested in reading the books (maybe to save on time), I should say it should be fair for him to at least consult the fanbases for the books the movies are based on so he'll know some facts going into a review. I mean, if he's seen all of Avatar: The Last Airbender before reviewing the Last Airbender movie, why can't he go to a little more length on stuff like this? If he doesn't like it, fine, but I'd say if he did do a little more research of the films based on books he's not a fan of, it would show a little more respect for his audience(s). Also, I totally agree, Harry Potter is awesome. He does not deserve to be abused by the Critic. I honestly thought that was the most mean-spirited part of this review. Very disheartening. :/
@elizabethjanemorgan3607
@elizabethjanemorgan3607 4 жыл бұрын
@@AishaVonFossen I get that the Critic is trying to judge a movie on its own merit, but at the same time, no movie is going to perfectly represent a book. Rick Riordan, the author of the Percy Jackson series, has five books to get through the story. It makes the experience much richer, especially since we're in Percy's point-of-view. You feel like you're there with Percy, learning and growing with him. As for the two movies, they only had so much time. We're not in Percy's point-of-view and so you feel more like an outsider and the things they change make the story feel muddled. I agree. It is disheartening that the Critic is so dismissive of both Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. They are both well defined, spirited characters and he just ignores their best qualities by choosing to only focus on what he considers to be their worst aspects.
@AishaVonFossen
@AishaVonFossen 4 жыл бұрын
@@elizabethjanemorgan3607 Oh yeah, it is common that movies aren't always close to the books, though I will say that some film adaptations get closer to the original source materials than others. I'm sure the books are much richer, as they take more of their time to tell a much more elaborate story. And to be honest, I kinda like the idea of the "wowed youngster" cliche, since we are seeing it in the main character's point of view, as someone connected to the fantastical world, and yet entirely brand new to it as well. I will agree with some of the tired tropes that the Critic points out about the "wowed youngster" cliche, but then again, who wouldn't be wowed by being introduced to a new world? One of the ways that made Harry so relatable for me is that like us, he was always wowed by being introduced to new parts of the Wizarding World he had never seen before in every book/film. And based on what you say, it sounds like the same thing for Percy. Yeah, I can see what you're saying about the movie's point of view. I guess it's pretty common in movies for their points of view to shift between all the characters, I guess in an attempt to flesh them out, but then again, it can also distract from the point of view in the story that really matters, like, as you say, Percy. Yeah, while I agree that Harry had some weak points in his character (but then again, as any character does, even the best ones), I agree, Harry is a well-defined, spirited character. And honestly, Harry has had to do a shit ton of work that really a lot of the adults in the Wizarding World should have been more on top of themselves, instead of, you know, leaving a *KID* to save *their* day! I don't care if he was some kind of prophesied "chosen one," he was still a kid who was thrown into a whole other environment that started out completely new to him, and he had to learn how it all worked, on top of defeating a powerful overlord, AND juggling his wizarding studies and personal life all at the same time! Harry definitely has my respect for surviving all that crap. LOL

the beauty of the percy jackson books and fandom is that the fandom doesnt need to imagine themselves as the main character, and we dont want to. we imagine ourselves as another character in the world, we go along with percy and his friends. we're with him and cheering him on his first day of camp, crying with him as he see's beloved friends die, and we laugh at his corny jokes. the books use that angle to give him an actual personality and make him someone who we love. he has good and bad traits, he has people he loves, he has things that are usually sacrificed to make a character more "relatable". hes unique, and not really like anyone. i cant relate to half of the things he does and is, however i relate to the world itself. a place where kids who dont fit in and lose hope in themselves belong. its even easier for me, a kid with adhd who's disorder holds them back, it gives me a place to feel like i belong. it even gives a way for people without adhd or dyslexia to see themselves in this world, with characters such as percy's mom, and racheal, but they too have personalities and goals many people dont. when my problems to do with adhd get really bad, i'll often start reading percy jackson books. you know what i wont do?? watch the FUCKING movies that take everything i love OUT THE WINDOW. they are a disgrace to the books which make me feel warm and comforted, and i hope the show is better then the clusterfuck that were the movies.

They use celestial bronze (I believe this is the name in English), a special magic metal that does, among other magic materials and relics. But as you can imagine, it's a lot more rare than regular metals, so they save it mostly for melee weapons. One guy has made bullets out of it once in the books, but it was for a special occasion: an actual army of monsters, where it was almost impossible to miss a target and waste ammo. Now tell me if the movie came even close to coming up with something that logical or interesting.

Considering the fact that one of the major conflicts in the series was godly parents being divine deadbeats who allowed their children to die/suffer without any love, support, or protection, the whole Poseidon-bails-Percy-out-constantly thing is a huge slap in the face. Percy has a complicated relationship with his father; he wanted to make him proud but was often let down and hurt/confused by his distance. Like Luke, he had to struggle to come to terms with his identity and godly heritage and even though he didn’t betray the gods, he never let them off the hook for their shitty behavior, either. GOD, the book is so much better, I’m going to go back to pretending it doesn’t exist

Having just re-read the series, one of the things that stands out to me watching the movie first time through is how Ms. Dodds immediately tells Percy in her first attack "you stole the lightning bolt" instead of just assuming his guilt and attacking him on sight, and then later asking "where is it (without saying its name)" like she did in the book. By being vague and indirect, it set up the Kindly ones to be more mysterious, left it up for Grover and Annabeth to theorize that maybe there was more going on there than Hades being the Thief. Just a perfect early red flag that story telling and Subtlety had no meaning in the movie lol.

Plus it’s explained in the extended book Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods that ghosts can’t lie, so when Luke’s judged in the underworld by the three golden masked men, a lot if not all of Kronos’s plans would’ve been unveiled to the Gods, and they could’ve stopped him while he was still weak in Tartarus. It sounds like making the character come across as "I am obviously going to betray you" and not "obvious red herring who tries too hard to make the audience think they're a traitor" will be extremely tricky and require almost as much luck as it will skill and effort. If you're talking about Snape with your last example, I'm still not convinced that spying on Voldemort for Dumbledore makes him a good guy. He was a true-believing Death Eater who switched sides for the sake of one person (NOT because hate crimes and terrorism are wrong) and continued to spend literally the rest of his life abusing children and being as much of a dick to everyone as he possibly could. Interesting fact: In the movie Hades seems like an evil asshole, but in Mythology. He's actually one of the most respectable, honest, loyal and most humane. He doesn't bitch or whine like the other gods, he just does his job. He doesn't punish people without a proper reason like Athena with Medusa (which is litualy a bitch saying "your not aloud to be prettier than me" and turns her into a snake. He a reliable husband that doesn't cheat on his wife like other gods (yes I'm talking to you Zues) In my opinion and I bet many others agree. Hades is the best god in Greek mythology, he's just misunderstood because of his job. It's like hating on a Lawyer when their just doing their job to provide for their family and life. I would actually like to see a movie where Hades is a good guy through out the entire film.

A FEW of the dumb changes they made from the book: *Percy and Annabeth are 12 in the first book, not teenagers *No mention of Clarisse (daughter of Ares and Percy's nemesis) in the movie. *No Mr. D aka Dionysus (overseer of the camp) in the movie (Yes I know they were both in the sequel but let's face it the movies were already dead to society by then) *Persephone's pearls were something they happened across by chance, not Dora the Explorer-type checkpoints *Percy didn't learn he was the son of Poseidon until the water healed him in capture the flag *Annabeth was the first person Percy met at camp, and they don't start out with animosity, just tepid awkwardness. *Percy is SENT on the quest to the underworld to get the bolt back from Hades and clear his name (he doesn't just sneak out), who everyone thinks really stole it. *Ares the war god is SUPER important in the book. HE gives the crew the lightning bolt hidden in a backpack given to him by Luke. *Luke being revealed as the villain isn't revealed until after Percy gets back to camp, and it's actually a decently done twist.

To be honest, at the beginning of the series most of the other demigods were indifferent to Percy at worst. If anyone in the book called Percy a "loser" (other than an unconvincing Clarisse), that person would be Percy himself. Considering his background with an abusive stepfather and multiple expulsions until he turned twelve in the books, this self-depreciation is somewhat justified.

13:24 Ok, any readers of the books already know that this is easily explained away by the Mist, which is essentially an invisible, magical gas that protects the vision of mortals from seeing anything they shouldn’t; usually by transforming it into something ordinary. However, for some reason, they chose not to include this concept in the film? It was mentioned in the sequel, but it worked completely differently from how it’s portrayed in the books. I honestly have no idea what the writers were thinking here...

In 7th grade my history class watched both the Percy Jackson Movies. I remember actually being upset when I found out there weren't any more Movies made after the sequel. Not because they were good, but because me and my friends enjoyed ripping into it.

Seriously. The first movie screw up so bad I don't even know HOW they managed to make a second since all the actual story elements were botched. The whole plot of the books hinges on anticipation for Percy's eventual sixteenth birthday due to a prophecy. So naturally, lets make him already 16 in the movie!

The books were actually pretty awesome. Instead of the lightning bolt being able to destroy the country, this movie was able to destroy the franchise. There was a sequel which had some awesome visuals but again had nearly NOTHING in common with the books. In the end, I'm glad they never made a third movie. I liked the movies as a kid, but I'm just a sucker for special effets
