When he was talking about the "fart joke" it reminded me of when I took the theatre in high school, thy actually taught us that a running joke in any play or movie is funny the first time, eye rolling the second, and hilarious the third time. If it's done right that is. Pretty interesting
@puffspetal357 жыл бұрын
Your teacher predicted this movie excepted it’s a bit more shit
@TriniKnight017 жыл бұрын
After the third instance (this is my second time watching the review), I stopped to think about it. I don't believe it's the fact that it happens three times (at that point), I think it's the fact that the comedic timing is spot on the first and third time and bad the second, fourth and last times (where it's really predictable and seems forced). ...did I really say a fart joke seemed forced? Oh dear.
@metademetra7 жыл бұрын

When Brent Spiner came to Ottawa Comic Con this past year, I really really _really_ wanted to bring in a DVD copy of this to get him to sign. Just to either hear his thoughts on it, see a disgusted look...I dunno. But then I remembered he'd have that look/feeling pretty much all day from the Trek fans, so I brought in Out To Sea instead. He's said in interviews it was his favourite project he's ever worked on (and said the same to me when I slid my DVD copy of it across the table to him). Totally worth it. 10-15 minutes of him reminiscing about working with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon was so much more satisfying than irking him.

Doug’s storyline with the fart joke is more entertaining than the entire movie
@FictionWriter957 жыл бұрын
For what it's worth, my analysis of the fart joke: 1st time: (Generally speaking) pretty unexpected 2nd time: Basically an exact repeat of the first time: you're expecting it, the surprise is totally lost 3rd time: You expect another repeat, then he stops laughing and you think they just forgot about putting it in or something. Then he starts talking and farts, creating a delayed gratification, aka "TIMING!", aka subversion of expectations, aka humor 4th time: He'd already farted several times in the seconds leading up to the joke, killing any suspense. Also the actor played it up too much 5th time: So much expectation has been built up (by that joke being the villain's only character trait) that's it's impossible for it to be funny anymore. And again, the Carvey and the others play it up too much. "Look! He farted! Just like all the other times! Isn't that such a great and clever joke we did for the entirety of the movie?" It would have been better if they paused for a second and somebody said, "Yep, he's dead" or something to that effect. I love doing analysis stuff like this :)

To be fair about Dana Carvey, at the time of this movie, he had been out of the spotlight for awhile because of botched heart surgery that resulted in him filing a lawsuit against the hospital that operated on him which he ended up winning. And also, if The Dana Carvey Show flopped, it wasn't because of a lack of talent considering that the writers and performers on his show included Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Robert Smigel, Louis CK, Spike Ferensten, Charlie Kaufman, and Dino Stamatopulous. That being said, there is no question that Critic is completely right about this movie. My impression of Carvey is that his humor was too broad and over-the-top to sustain a successful movie career and he worked best as a co-star or co-lead like in Wayne's World or with somebody to counterbalance him. Here, there's no counterbalance. He's so broad with that annoying accent and over-the-top with those disguises (Indian blackface and Latin brownface was funny to you? Really?). Mouth open is still funny, hee hee!

It's sad that this movie was so terrible because I feel like Dana Carvey is a very talented comedic actor when put in the right role. The thing is he's not the type who can carry a movie on his own. He works better when paired up with someone a bit more grounded to contrast his over-the-top style. For example, Dana played Garth in the movie Wayne's World. While both Wayne and Garth were pretty ridiculous characters, Wayne was the more relateable of the two, and Garth was more of a caricature played solely for laughs. This allowed for the two to play off of each other, explore really absurd comedic avenues, and still feel grounded
