Tom and Jerry: A Nutcracker Tale is a 2007 American direct-to-video animated Christmas fantasy comedy film. The film was produced by Warner Bros. Animation and Turner Entertainment Co., and is the first Tom and Jerry film directed by Spike Brandt and Tony Cervone. It serves as the fifth direct-to-video Tom and Jerry film and is a semi-adaptation of 1816 short story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" by E. T. A. Hoffmann, with Jerry in the role of the Nutcracker and Tom in the role of one of the Mouse King's (who is reimagined as a cat) henchmen.

I loved watching this every December as a kid and, as far as direct to DVD Tom and Jerry movies go, it's still pretty good. Definitely one of the better ones. The animation matches up with the music pretty well, the songs are good, (I still get the one where the cats are preparing to go after Jerry stuck in my head sometimes,) the slapstick is great, and Joseph Barbera's presence is definitely felt. I think the ending was meant to confirm that the whole movie was intended like a stage performance breaking into reality. The magic world itself is more like stage becoming an entire universe on its own (you can tell it by the various fake backgrounds the characters pass through). I always liked this movie. There was genuine effort in it and some of the moments were somehow... artsy. The dragon scene for example was completely dialogue free and everything was built on the music, the imagery and the mood. Some of the elements didn't even receive an actual explaination: it was just... suggestive imagery, visual storytelling with moments intended to make the mood and the great Nutcracker music sink in. Yeah it was still a direct-to-video kids movie with all its tropes and gags and so on, plus it's too short to qualify as a full-lenght feature, but you know what? I wish more animated direct-to-video movies back then had this quality (I was born in 2002 and I was five when this movie came out).

I do appreciate how this movie utilized Andrea Romano, who always brought her a-game, and talented Canadian voice-over artists. I'd like to see an animated Nutcracker special that effectively integrated the lesser known aspects of E.T.A. Hoffman's story (like The Rat King being a vengeful monster with 7 heads) as well as Tchaikovsky's music.

The reason for the huge Canadian cast is because of Tom and Jerry Tales. Not only to keep the cast consistent from that series, but also the fact that Tony Cervone and Spike Brandt became directors for season 2 right after finishing Duck Dodgers and prior to working at Nick studios on Back at the barnyard. Eventually, those two returned to WB TV animation for future projects T&J/ Scooby doo projects where they're stilling working to this day. 🥰🥰🥰

yes!! so glad to see other fans of the nutcracker prince. it's the only adaptation that made me realize how dramatic and out-of-place 'pas de deux' is when compared with the other songs. plus, i love how the rat king started off goofy but then became monstrous and terrifying when clara was all alone. with the world-building, i think the film takes a lot of inspiration from the original short story rather than the ballet, but i get what you mean.

I'd appreciate it if Doug looked at a few of the most popular Barbie movies. Princess and the Pauper is legitimately a good film, Rapunzel would be interesting to compare to the Disney version and Nutcracker does have a legitimately interesting and at the time quite original concept of using motion capture to translate the dance moves of the ballet into the movie. Also, Tim Curry as the rat king.

Big yes to this comment thread. I would love to hear Doug talk about The Nutcracker Prince and/or Barbie’s version: still to this day I feel like these are the only two that deviant from the typical tropes in Nutcracker movies, but unlike Untold Story or Four Realms, it’s done in a respectful way to the original story *and* the ballet. Sure, both have their issues mainly around the limited budget considering what they were made for, but exactly that point shows how much potential those versions have to be the ultimate modern retelling of the story. These two will always have a soft spot in my heart.

9:43 Correction: Tom is voiced by an uncredited Spike Brandt, who along with Tony Cervone are a television writing, animation and production team at Warner Bros. Animation and formerly at Nickelodeon Animation Studios. The duo is best known for doing various projects about Scooby-Doo, The Flinstones, Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes. They had also worked on Animaniacs, Duck Dodgers, The Looney Tunes Show and various other projects. Brandt had also voiced Spike Bulldog in various Tom and Jerry direct-to-DVD movies. This is probably my favorite Tom and Jerry special. I've never seen the actual Nutcracker performance, but if it really is without dialogue, then that automatically plays into their favor. They didn't have to rely completely on the characters talking to carry every scene through, they could offload some of it onto the original's score, which I think brings it back closer to the show than the other specials. The dialogue they added was probably to help follow the story and keep attention for its length, as well as add in a few more jokes. The Tom and Jerry slapstick also flows better with the narrative in this one, whereas in The Wizard of Oz and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, it feels more shoehorned in and fighting for screentime with the established story.

Have you considered reviewing 1986’s Nutcracker: The Motion Picture? It’s not only a visual stunner of a movie with a true-but-tweaked approach to the storyline, but the set design and changes to the story were done by Maurice Sendak! Thanks to his influence, this take on the classic has one of the most unique versions of the Land of Sweets’ set pieces that I’ve seen, but it retains the heart and beauty and imagination of the original ballet. It’s definitely worth a watch, if you haven’t seen it yet.

I think the reason was because Tom and Jerry are the lead(-ish) characters. Both are not afterthoughts to the plot since they are actually involved. The one that is an afterthought is Tom because he's just another lacky being someone's btch to do things. The problem with other crossover adaptations is both are just unnecessary and would've benefited to just do an animated adaptation.

*The following is the opinion of a Salty SEAGULL named EARL who just shows up in my posts whenever he feels like it!* [EARL the Salty SEAGULL:] 2:50 - "Bah Humbug to the writers of this! They missed a golden opportunity to make Jerry the villain for once! Sorry but I usually root for the CAT in cartoons featuring CAT vs RODENT! Cartoon Rodents play the protagonist way too much and its more predictable than clever!" 3:38 - "At least they were nice enough to show Jerry's perverted side! Seriously, that rodent is just using the play as an excuse to look up the ballerina's skirts!" 3:52 - "Guess Jerry isn't the only perverted cartoon mouse! Still not surprising given how sex crazed some rodents are (seriously there is the one species where the males essentially become sex zombies due to their biology with their bodies dying during the mating process (whether it is successful or not)! Seriously their worse than spawning Salmon!" 4:14 - "At least Jerry can only look up this Ballerina's skirt when he's lift her above his head while they dance!" 4:52 - "At least Jerry wasn't responsible, as Tom would never be able to live it down!" 5:04 - "Don't ask Jerry! Unlike you, he can't talk!" 5:18 - "If memory serves me, he's been French in some of cartoons where he and Jerry are Musketeers!" 5:35 - "No you are not! Though to be fair, the animators probably upped the CARTOON VIOLENCE to cater to modern audiences!" 5:50 - "Calm down NC! Its a BLACK & WHITE CAT not a CAT in BLACK FACE!" 6:05 - "Again I wouldn't be surprised if these were just shots of Jerry's drunken sexcapades!" 6:22 - "I will admit that would be an interesting concept for a Toy Story film! I'd imagine it would be like some sort of toy disability and it would be interesting to see Woody interact with another pull string toy who can only talk when their string is pulled!" 7:07 - "Hey! I think Tom has every right to have a good time with a lady cat, especially after all the love interests he's lost to Jerry over the years!" 7:21 - "Yep, Playfully gruesome does some it up quite well!" 7:27 - "That would be more hilarious!" 7:47 - "Cause it is obviously being played by all the Tom fans who want to see Jerry drown!" 7:55 - "Does it also involve mice drowning?" 8:07 - "Gotta admit, this is a clever gag!" 8:17 - "Would have been way funnier if Tom did it to Jerry!" 8:27 - "Obviously Itchy & Scratchy has caused people to believe older Tom & Jerry cartoons are more violent than they actually were!" 8:34 - "Gotta agree the scream would have been more funny if a Sarlac pit suddenly appeared, though I'm guessing they didn't do it cause they don't own the rights to Star Wars and couldn't use Star Wars stock footage like an old episode of Muppet Babies!" 8:50 - "At least its better use of said score than the haphazard use of said music by Golden Films!" 9:00 - "Jerry has obviously been taking notes from watching Itchy from the Simpsons!" 9:05 - "Yep, the Woodchipper definitely feels like something out of an Itchy & Scratchy cartoon!" 9:07 - "Still more PG than Itchy & Scratchy!" 9:34 - "Goes to show why Tom is still one of the best cartoon cats in the business! He knows how to vocalize his pain to make it funny!" 10:44 - "There is also Pica from One Piece! Also I'm calling it now, the plot twist is the high-pitched Santa is just one of his elves!" 14:23 - "CALL IT!" 15:12 - "Nobody takes Rollercoaster cars to the face like ol' Tom! Also the scoring does kinda fit with the carnival atmosphere!" 15:17 - "Tom has obviously been upping his comedic face faults over the years! Gotta make it gruesome to appeal to modern audiences and out of respect for his boy Scratchy from the Simpsons (I hear Tom has a lot of respect for his parody)!" 15:24 - "Dude its obvious the animators just wanted to draw a SEXY BALLERINA, especially after the SEXY FIRE scene!" 15:48 - "By pulling the string, duh?!" 15:50 - "Creepy, Dr Mengel Germam CAT with an eye patch works too!" 15:54 - "I get the feeling the creators actually saw The Nutcracker 3D and that inspired this character!" 16:00 - "That description is pretty on the mark! Still it makes sense he'd be the CAT ARMY's specialist on TORTURE!" 16:11 - "Still its funnier that he just uses the pliers to pull the string to make her talk!" 16:35 - "Of course, not! JACK@$$ do their stupid stunts on purpose!" *rimshot* 16:38 - "Of course the Toy Maker is Santa Claus! How else can you explain toys the magically come to life and cats and mice reenacting the Nutcracker on Christmas?!" 16:47 - "Yep, definitely sounds like a Santa spell to me! He's always been a stickler for EVIL TRIUMPHS WHEN GOOD MEN DO NOTHING! Also what is there not to understand?!" 17:00 - "Again, Santa is a stickler for the EVIL TRIUMPHS quote and if you have a kingdom you gotta fight for it! It is NAUGHTY not to stand up and fight! Also Santa is afraid the CAT KING will become a NAZI/FACIST like RAT KING Hitler from The Nutcracker 3D!" 17:14 - "Gotta agree the Nutcracker that is out of step with the others works! I mean getting them all to sink up is just to tedious for Santa to bother with!" 17:17 - "Sounds like this Nutcracker had way too much of Mrs. Claus' Eggnog! Though then again that stuff would make anyone plastered and that Nutcracker is lucky he can still march!" 17:23 - "You know the SEXY BALLERINA looks kinda cute when she's angry... for a humanoid toy (her ballet outfit reminds me of the plumage of this really attractive lady Swan I happen to know)!" 17:27 - "Aw, for once I wish Tom would actually end up eating Jerry! But no, it just has to be set up for them to break his entire jaw! Thankfully cartoon cats like Tom have wonderful dental plans!" 17:31 - "This is a terrible Christmas movie! Where is the good will and kindness! I mean the mice get to live in the theater while the cats are forced to live in an alley in what is probably a cold dumpster! I really don't blame the cats for invading though I personally think Tom would make a far better CAT KING! Seriously he doesn't even get top billing as the main antagonist!" 17:51 - "That would be funny! It would be even funnier if the rocks falling had actually karmaically killed Jerry for not being nice to Tom and the Alley cats around Christmas and for cheating on SEXY BALLERINA with SEXY FIRE!" 17:57 - "Dude its not random magic! Its Santa's Christmas Magic! That toy risked its life to save Jerry, thus it automatically resurrected as dying to save Jerry would have been meaningless given he's no Saint and a two-timing pervert!" 18:05 - "Santa was using his magic so Jerry would put on a show for him and the human BALLERINA! By the way, I hear Mrs. Claus and Santa have an open marriage, so she doesn't have a problem with him taking the human BALLERINA on a date as that is what she wanted for Christmas!"

It still amazes me that the Willy Wonka film was what halted these movies from being once a year like Scooby Doo. That being said, I would love to see them team up in a future movie. I’m honestly surprised they didn’t do that in Scooby Doo and Guess Who.

Hopefully the license for Tom and Jerry plus Scooby wouldn't cost Warner that much. Since they only do distribution for the characters but don't own them from a technically.
@EWOODJ
@EWOODJ Жыл бұрын
Then who owns them?
@stephenholloway6893
@stephenholloway6893 Жыл бұрын
@EWOODJ Turner and Hanna Barbera respectively but their all in the same parent company. It's just that sometimes the rights does get transferred and sometimes like in this case it doesn't only the distribution. Same with the DC characters for example Warner has distribution but not the rights itself.

The interesting thing about the titles for this movie, Fast and the Furry, and Shiver Me Whiskers is the real life names they are puns on or are named after. The Fast and the Furry is a pun on Fast and Furious, which is why it’s a car-racing movie with Tom and Jerry in it, Shiver Me Whiskers is a pun on the phrase “Shiver Me Timbers,” which is what pirates say, and that’s why it’s a Tom and Jerry movie with pirates, and A Nutcracker Tale is named after the Christmas Nutcracker soldier and it even has the Nutcracker March music conducted by Tchaikovsky, which is why it’s the Tom and Jerry Christmas movie.
