Frozen II, also known as Frozen 2, is a 2019 American 3D computer-animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. The 58th animated film produced by the studio, it is the sequel to the 2013 film Frozen and features the return of directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, producer Peter Del Vecho, songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and composer Christophe Beck. Lee also returns as screenwriter, penning the screenplay from a story by her, Buck, Marc E. Smith, Anderson-Lopez, and Lopez, while Byron Howard executive-produced the film. Veteran voice cast Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, Jonathan Groff, and Ciarán Hinds return as their previous characters, and they are joined by newcomers Sterling K. Brown, Evan Rachel Wood, Alfred Molina, Martha Plimpton, Jason Ritter, Rachel Matthews, and Jeremy Sisto.

Admit it. The ONLY reason they put Anna and Elsa’s parents ship in this movie was to shut up the Little Mermaid and Tangled theorists. Edit: also the Tarzan theorists, my apologies for the exclusion.

Oh yeah, definitely. I think they should've let theorists theorize. Many theorists end up having to rewatch the movies they theorize about so they either buy movie tickets or a DVD which, either way, is profitable for Disney.

What I'd really like to know now is how the writers decided that the film should end with Anna as Queen. Jen Lee has gone on record saying that she views Anna as a fairytale heroine (the kind which ends up a Queen) and Elsa as a mythical heroin (the kind which usually meets a tragic fate). I can get by Anna being a fairtytale heroine, but I don't quite get their point about Elsa, apart from the fact that she's horribly overpowered in the setting. Although the tragic fate thing would at least explain the ending. They wanted Elsa out of the picture without killing her since this is Disney, so they came up with a rushed-up non-explanation. If anything, Anna in F2 was Hans'ed. They gave us minimal hints suggesting that she would become a Queen. She is suddenly “a leader” when she wasn’t before in the first movie. I don’t consider leaving the kingdom in the hands of a stranger like Hans to be a good move, and I don't see it as something that qualifies her as a good "leader”. And what they did in Frozen II to prove that Anna is a leader is through retcons. And not even good retcons, since she managed to convince a total of one person, Mathias, to let her destroy the dam. And even for that, she used Elsa’s authority and name (“my sister gave her life”). She has other qualities, but "leader" is not one of them. She also never studied for it. I know the books are only semi-canon, but the ones set during their childhoods show that as a kid, Anna was usually outside playing while Elsa was busy studying. Even as an adult, Anna sleeps in late and spends her days outside. Which establishes that she’s a free spirit, not someone who should spend her life at a desk. It’s not what she wanted. She was never written as a wannabe queen, all she ever wanted was to be with Elsa and be useful to her. She’s not the single and introverted Queen that was different and new, but the usual extroverted princess who gets a boyfriend and a kingdom. Undoing the first movie's progressive display of an unmarried Queen who didn't need a husband or boyfriend to be capable of ruling. It would make more sense for Anna to be a knight or ambassador. Any sort of position that would allow her to use an ice sword.

@@TheLewistownTrainspotter8102 That's because Jennifer Lee was never the sole writer or idea guy for the movie, John Lasseter ideas on Elsa was the one that made that character popular in the first place, and now since he is no longer in the company, Elsa and Anna felt inconsistent because they're filling in the blanks for somebody else's vision and not their own

I heard rumors about how Disney was going to make Anna & Elsa a couple before this was released. But it looks like they backed out of that......kinda. I mean it's not there, but at the same time it is. But I get the feeling if this movie came out 2 or 3 years later from its debut, Disney would undoubtedly go All In on that. Hell, they may just do exactly that with Frozen 3 they just announced.

So I kinda need to interject with something here: Anna's song isn't about losing Olaf, it's about losing Elsa. She knows what Olaf dying means, her sister is gone as as far as she knows is never coming back. That's what Anna's character arc is about, how her incredible focus on Elsa defines her and warps into a kind of co-dependency where it's the *only* thing she cares about. All of her freaking out and emotional turmoil up to that point was because Elsa was pulling away (in a healthier, less destructive manner than in the first movie), trying to do things without her, following *her* journey which Anna *isn't* a part of, and The Next Right Thing is the culmination of that where Anna has to find a way to move forward in a world without the thing that, for the last three years, has been her purpose.

@FatedHandJonathon 4 жыл бұрын
@@tacticstonk4740 It's not symbolism, man. Olaf "dies" because Elsa does; Anna knows this. He's the messenger, not the message. The song is very directly sung about Elsa; in what sense has Anna "always followed" Olaf around?
@thomasgeary9145
@thomasgeary9145 4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad someone pointed that out. Anna had a pretty decent character arc in this movie. She wanted everything to stay the same way. She follows Elsa so she can keep her safe and bring her back so everything remains the same. Also destroying Arendelle wasnt what would lift the curse it was destroying the dam. Something Anna thought WOULD destroy Arendelle. Her arc was completed by moving on thinking she was losing not only her sister but her entire kingdom. And doing it because it was The Next Right Thing.

When Anna says 'the only star that guided me was you' she's talking about Elsa. The reason she is so profoundly devastated in that scene is because she knows that if Olaf is falling apart, something happened to Elsa. That's what she's mourning, it's just compounded by Olaf's death.

Honestly the deleted scenes show the movie that we should've gotten. Not only do we get all of the Elsa stuff, but Anna's role as queen is better foreshadowed through the use of the song "Home", where she sings about how much she loves Arendelle and wants to give its people more. That could've been a point of debate for her when they have to flood the fjord. Also, Kristoff was supposed to propose (well, Anna does actually, but either way they get engaged) at the beginning of the movie. Kristoff was going to have an internal conflict about how he didn't enjoy his life in Arendelle because the royal life doesn't suit him. It made Anna question whether or not they should get married.

Well fuck, I think we can blame the higher ups at Disney for that. Jennifer Lee clearly cares about Frozen - it's her baby and it made her name - but since Disney is full of corrupt arseholes who don't know shit about writing, I suspect they restrained her from telling the full story.

So a lot of stuff had to be scrapped in order to cater to them. Also, deadline. This movie HAD to be finished before Thanksgiving weekend and there was no time to redo anything. No excuses! To clarify: Anna 100% knew her sister was dead while singing "The Next Right Thing." It was the only way Olaf would fade. The song is for Elsa, for Olaf, and for pushing away Kristoff. She is, once again, alone like she was all her life. In her eyes, she has no family again. It's all either been taken from her or she has pushed it away. If you truly are a fan of 'show dont tell', this scene truly does an incredible job at it. Olaf is a catalyst, not the entire reason she is sad.

Dude, I think the reason why they needed to point out the unsurprising twist of the parents drowning was because Anna and Elsa needed closure about their parents once and for all. Sometimes, when people you care about go missing and are probably dead, there’s a part of you that will always need to see evidence of your missing loved one’s fate before moving on. They did it because they HAD to be sure. Because they needed closure. They needed to see for themselves that their parents were really dead. If they hadn’t, it would’ve eaten them up from the inside for the rest of their lives. Basically, they showed that shipwreck scene not for the audience’s benefit, but rather for Elsa and Anna’s benefit. So that they could get closure and move on.

in some respects, Ice kinda overpowers all 4. Freezing water, for a starter, being able to become an immovable force to wind or even change it's course because of temperature, can overpower fire in greater quantities and we have real-life examplesof water overpowering earth with things like permafrost and even CRACKING STONE with the simple act of expanding when water freezes. So in some respect, Ice is pretty able to strong-arm all 4 elements into submission.

I would personally have loved to see them having Elsa on her own journey and Anna having to take her place as queen while Elsa is away. Then seeing Anna and Christoff taking on the new responisibility and letting them learn how to fit in, and how it effects their relationship. That would have been more interesting to watch next to Elsa's story. And it would fit more into Anna becoming queen in the end, having learned that's her right place to be and it wouldn't change the end of the original story too much. But that's just my opinion

I agree with NC that this movie feels clumsier and less fulfilling than the first. However, I think a lot of the popularity might have to do with how much it resonates with people experiencing grief. I'd argue that grief is the subplot of the whole movie for both sisters, although it's a little clearer to witness with Anna. Both sisters never had closure over the loss of their parents, so I feel that part of the reason Elsa starts her journey, which Anna follows on, is to learn more about her parents and their fate, and to feel closer to them. This is part of the reason why the boat is placed in the movie, so they can have some closure about their parents death. I also want to point out, though it looks like several people have already, that Anna's song of grief is not about Olaf, but rather because his death indicates that Elsa may have died too. Elsa has become the most important person in the world to Anna, so much so that she refuses to leave her side. The song is her realizing that she is alone in this world now, and needs to figure out how to live her own life without her sister. My mother recently passed away and I have heard the phrase "Do the next right thing" multiple times in grief counseling. It is a mantra given to the grieving in the early days so they know how to get through each day, until they develop a new normal. It is no coincidence that Anna's song is called "The Next Right Thing". She feels lost without Elsa, without her parents, even to a far lesser extent without Olaf, and she needs this mantra to help her move forward on her own. It is rare for a children's movie to tackle the uncomfortable subject of grief, and I think that Frozen 2's open and honest portrayal of some of the emotions and confusion of grief is part of why it has gained so much popularity.

Olaf was a fine character in this one, had a couple of funny moments, and I get that Anna's song was mostly for Elsa, with Olaf being a part of Elsa's power as she's created him and brought him to life.

I'll be honest, when Elsa stopped the wave with that ice wall, that is the one time I actually boo'd a movie in a theatre. Because, it could've been a good message about being able to adapt to change, no matter how bad. Arendelle could rebuild, there could be a sweet ending bit of community as the forest people help the reconstruction. Both Elsa and Anna could've been leading the effort together, and that one lack of commitment is why I struggle to give this movie a recommendation.

I kinda like what they did with Ana. It was mentioned that Ana now sticks to Elsa like glue, but considering the events from the first movie, it makes sense. Elsa wasn't a part of a good chunk of Ana's life growing up and was, for the most part, fighting for Elsa to come back. Now that she is in her life I think it's only natural that Ana wants to keep Elsa as close to her as she can. Which leads to the point about Ana's solo song. I'm pretty confident that Ana isn't singing to/about Olaf, but about losing Elsa for good (to her knowledge) and trying to find the strength of having to move forward on her own without her sister around. Which of course helps her accept Elsa leaving and now having to rule Arendelle on her own.
@7snowdog

Exactly. As the director said, in the first movie Anna had everything to gain, in the second one she had everything to lose. There are some great stories from history about people ending up in vastly different cultures than they began in. Yasuke, the black samauri from the 1500s, is a great example. Ahmad ibn Fadlan, the Spanish Muslim who gives us the first historical record of Viking society, is another. (The book Eaters of the Dead and the film adaptation The Thirteenth Warrior start with the historical Fadlan and tack Beowulf and extensive creative liberties onto the end; they are absolutely fantastic!)

I don’t like how this and Ralph Breaks the Internet seem to accidentally walk back on, if not outright contradict, their previous films’ messages. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the messages they ARE trying to tell, but they don’t really work with the characters involved because they kind of force them to act out of character and against what they should know for the sake of the message. That’d be like if a Zootopia 2 ended with “well, I guess we CAN’T coexist peacefully”. This could have really benefitted from a few more minutes in the oven.

Frozen 2's song that follows the mom's song immediately after is just about how everyone is happy which we already knew because that's how 1 ended: with everyone happy. In Anna’s opening song, I got more of a “it’s been 6 months vibe”. Like three years is a long time for shit to happen. Why are the spirits calling out to Elsa now? Why is Olaf just now getting permafrost? Why do none of the characters look older? Why does Anna and Kristoff have less chemistry? Etc. As a cat owner, as soon as I saw Doug stumble through his house screaming, I waited for the moment a startled Chaplin would come running out from one of the rooms. The scene where Chaplin bemusedly peers in while Doug rolls around in a chair screaming leads me to believe this is just an ordinary day around the Walker household, however.

Elsa looks good with her hair down. And looking at this again, isn’t she the first to become a queen and step down on the position? And when you think about it, isn’t she and kida from Atlantis the most powerful females in Disney? Power wise. At least in terms of good guys.

Anna’s arc is more about letting Elsa do her thing and that she doesn’t need Anna’s protection. It’s like the clingy parent learning to let go of their kid because it’s what best for both of them. Anna’s overcompensating for years of absence and has her own life to live instead of shadowing a Elsa.

i agree, and the concept of anna's arc is the saving graces of the movie for me, but it's hard to tell how much was a conscious decision to explore anna's character and how much emerged as a result of elsa being the focus of the movie and everything existing to prop her up.

Let me enlighten you. Anna said it herself. Elsa was a gift from the spirits of the enchanted forest because their mother saved their father, an enemy of her tribe. Also, it’s obvious that the spirits bet on their offsprings, the royal descendants of that tyrant that built the problem of the forest in the first place, to destroy the dam when the time comes. And from that we can conclude that the spirits waited for Elsa to calm down before calling to her. That’s why they weren’t there in the first movie. Who would want to put the burden of the truth on the shoulders of an already emotionally and mentally unstable person? They probably sweated so much when these two went through a near-death experience in the first movie. Lol. XD

@@davebautista2027 Yeah and people aren't really born with 50 ft hair. Tangled still went with it and nobody cared. (Yes, it was because of the sun or whatever but that still doesn't explain things, and I know the show goes more into it, but since they're technically two separate entities, I'm going to ignore it. Besides, a movie shouldn't make you have to watch/read something else to understand it) Like the Critic said, the OG Frozen sacrificed logic and stretched plausible deniability to tell a story and focus on the emotions. AKA, it was trying to be a classic fairy tale. When you go back to watch Cinderella, do you wonder where the Fairy Godmother came from? No, because it's a fairy tale. When you go back to watch the Little Mermaid, do you wonder where mermaids came from? Or how they somehow understand english like the land people? No, because it's a fairy tale. Crazy logic is just kinda how fairy tales work. A moon that eats children who stay out too late? Makes sense! So how is it fair to not care about the magic systems and logic in those movies but suddenly it's not fair to not care about the magic systems in this movie? Plus the "dont like it dont watch it" argument is so dumb. You can want a continuation of the story you love or the characters you love without needing/wanting to know about Elsa's powers.
