Fun fact: the inflexibility problem has been an issue for decades at Disney. In the documentary 'Waking Sleeping Beauty', there was a moment where they talked about how Jeffrey Katzenberg had a meeting with the group of animators (this was around Beauty and the Beast's production) and asked how they were doing. One guy said that he didn't have any time to see his family. Another said he would have to sleep in the studio in order to make his deadlines. Katzenberg was supposedly 'moved to tears' and went "this is wrong, you have to have a life" and then did nothing to change it. Kinda explains a lot, actually.

Thing is, personally, I think most of this problem comes from the first movie. The first movie gave us the message that elsa's journey was done. She had accepted herself, symbolized by her control over her powers and acceptance of love in order to thaw. There was nothing hinted at about her wanting something more. ... And then frozen 2 tells us "oh, she actually doesn't feel comfortable, let's make her search for herself AGAIN". We don't know what she's truly looking for or why. Nothing was planted beforehand so the fifth element thing feels like an arsepull Long story short, it didn't need a sequel. So the sequel's story could only pull at nothing.

I think you’re right. The first movie definitely concluded elsa’s looking for herself. I do like playing with the Idea that she’s not ready to be queen, considering she was a complete shut in. Logically she shouldn’t be ready to be all the aspects of queen. I also like the Idea of just giving one more lore indication of where her powers come from. By framing it as a mysterious voice they had the chance to explore this angle. If elsa wasn’t so internally driven by it it could have absolutely been seen as a threat against airendell and elsa’s journey could have been to investigate the source. None of this 5th element stuff tho. Just 1 of a few other elements. In investigating and dealing with the threat elsa could be learning more and more about what it means to be queen to protect yourself and your people. She can use her powers against another spirit, accidentally harm it, and actually think about the nescecity of self defense. What if instead of the spirits being mad about the dam or the 5ths spirit leaving, say it was elsa who was ‘stolen’ not for power or whatever but because their parents fell in love, but as adults, and the actual voice is calling her back maliciously because it sees the power as stolen? We can go from movie 1 being elsa finding herself and accepting who she is, to movie 2 being elsa and anna together learning the war/peace responsibilities of the crown. That way we still get to a lot of the points they wanted to seem to hit.

They've always been that way ever since Bob Iger became the CEO of the company, which he's not anymore (but he doesn't actually officially leave Disney for good until the end of next year) now that former Disney Parks Chairman, Bob Chapek has taken Iger's old top job. But Chapek was the worst Disney Parks Chairman of all time. He ruined the Disney Parks division just like Iger ruined the whole company because he's just like Iger. So he was completely unworthy of becoming Disney's newest CEO. And as soon as Iger officially retires, Chapek is going to pick up right where Iger left off and continue to run Disney to the ground. That's a sure sign that Disney may never be restored to it's former glory and truly become great again and that's really sad.

After the hype peak its only played by people who are dedicated and beyond that no one speaks of it. So yes it was perfect timing but they still released a half baked game most likely because they had no pressure on their employees. WHICH ISN'T A BAD THING, but if you don't put expectations a delayed game will look just like a rushed game but with less glitches. I took a 3D animation course (didn’t finish it is literally hell. You have to be nuts to work in this industry) and sadly deadlines and last minute crunches are VERY VERY VERY common. Like it’s in almost every movie. And I’m not just talking about fully animated. Any movie with cgi works their animators to the bone last minute. Too give you an idea of what it’s like I told my friends hat we were told by multiple animators that came to talk to our class and when I told them what work hours turned into in the last months all my friend told me is “but that’s illegal, they can’t make you do that” and she was right. But animators jobs like this don’t work like most jobs. You work contract jobs. It’s true they can’t MAKE you come in and work 20 hours, but this shot needs to be done buy Wednesday and you know they don’t HAVE to sign you back. You don’t get it done, you don’t have a job after this movie. Doesn’t even matter if you know this movie is going to suck. One of the animators I talked to worked on the dolittle remake. She said it sucked in the kindest way possible. This was maybe a month before it came out?? I’m sure not all jobs are the same, but from all the people in the industry I talked to it is most of them. If ya have any questions feel free to ask. I have a good amount of industry knowledge even if I’m not in it. c:

"Adults liked it, but kids found it too vague." So what you're saying is, individuals that grew up watching Frozen liked it and thought it was a good sequel, but smaller kids that never had a connection to Frozen didn't know what was going on. So instead of going with the adults that would for sure spend money on a good sequel, they bet on the kids who MIGHT NOT watch it, and so made a film that felt like it didn't even belong in the same universe. GOT IT.

"Kids found it too confusing and vague, so the crew decided to go back and simplify everything." Back when Frozen came out in 2013, I was about 4 or 5 when I saw it, and I didn't even understand most of the movie. Maybe it's because I skipped most of the scenes, or because I was just paying attention to the visuals and the music and not to the dialogue, but rewatching it as a 13 year old, I realized that there were a bunch of things in the original movie that I didn't get when I was younger. I didn't understand what the trolls were doing when they were changing Anna's memories, or why Elsa was distanced and isolated from Anna. I didn't understand what happened when their parents died, so my Dad had to explain it afterwards. I know that everyone's saying this, but I'll say this again: They didn't need to go simplify and clarify things to make it easier for kids to understand. I didn't even understand the first Frozen movie when I was 5 years old. When they rewatch it when they're older, the things that went over their head when they were younger, they will understand later on. And this is the thing with a bunch of media and stories.

@@boyfriendkisser The difference being that Into the Unknown, while a decent song, is fairly vague in subject matter. You could put it in nearly any adventure movie. The lyrics of Let It Go are much more personal and specific to the character in question and acted as a turning point for her. Thematically it has much more in common with Show Yourself. It's the kind of song that gives a sympathetic look into the mind and heart of the character, which is why they rewrote her around it. It would have been fantastic as a villian song too because it would have made us understand where she was coming from and given the villain depth. For Frozen II, Disney had six years between feature-length installments. It was announced in March 2015, effectively four and a half years. Typically Disney films take five years in production from conceptualization to finish, though Frozen already did a huge amount of heavy lifting for the sequel by establishing characters, setting, and various assets. Like this review describes, if you love frozen 2 I think this will help you understand why it was so great, and if you hated frozen 2 it provides a certain amount of insight as to why it was so bad (though I wish the documentary started earlier, it begins when they're animating which I assume is several months after the story is written).

Crunch is disgustingly normal, and it's basically garunteed every animated movie you've seen in the last five years has gone thru some form of it. But more attention should be drawn to it, and I think people who do critisim of media should know and care more about the actual humans behind the stuff they're talking about. Animation is fucking hard, period. Nice to see that acknowledged.

Exactly. Many people call themselves "animation fans" but they don't even bother learning the names of the people who worked hard on the product they say they love so much. @Meleena22184 жыл бұрын
i just graduated animation this year and let me tell you about crunch time people that read this. it's disgusting. EA got in a shit load of trouble for mistreating their staff during crunch time. I forget what it was called, something like the worker's wives? basically, the animator's wives all got pissed that their spouses were pulling 80 hour work weeks to get games done and not being paid for the overtime. sadly EA is one but many companies that do this. I believe TellTale games had the same issues, rockstar, Disney, Ubisoft (I think), and so many more. Japan is really well known for pushing its staff too for small wages mostly in the 2d animation field. one of my profs told me stories of being scared of holding up the pipeline because it could cost the company everything and possibly blacklist them for future work (not sure how it is nowadays but that was waaaay back in the day so...). my other profs told me of times where the studios would go bankrupt and can't afford to pay the staff for months of work so the staff would show up and raid the studios of computers so they could sell them for money. but I still want to make video games lol just wish we'd unionize the field so we would be more secure.

That's probably the main reason why Nintendo's online survices suffer the most, compared to other companies. Recently though, they hinted in an interview that they are planning on changing and improving their online survices, probably to keep up to the expectations of modern gaming speed. If that happens, their profits will boost drastically!

When I watched Frozen 2 for the first time, the ending blew me away.... for the wrong reasons. From the point Elsa froze and Olaf got Thanosed I was super into the story. I was like "Holy crap this is a really cool twist!" I thought Elsa and Olaf *died.* I was *entranced* by the idea that Disney had done such a risky and bold move. I loved Anna running from the rock giants to destroy the dam..... then the movie copped out and everyone came back to life and the kingdom didn't get destroyed and I got off my computer feeling dead inside. I was so shell shocked by how quickly I had gone from being emotionally invested in a *Frozen* movie of all things, to being slapped in the face by Disney consumerism and predictability. In hindsight I thought: Of course Elsa and Olaf wouldn't die, they're cash cows, Disney wouldn't be that brave. They wouldn't send little kids crying out of theaters. But I believed that they had been that brave. And it hurt to see that I was wrong. There was an article I read that the original ending was going to be the destruction of the kingdom and Anna becoming queen, but Disney put a gun to their heads and said no.

One of the stories I heard was that whenever they were making a new animation, artists would sit in this one, incredibly hot room with their shirts literally *soaked* in sweat (and tears) while Walt himself would silently loom over them, arms crossed. Then they would finish a scene, hand it over to Walt to have it "inspected", and if he liked it then they can proceed, and if he didn't then he'd throw every single sketches into the bin so they'd have to do it all over again. Test screenings remain a controversial issue within film studies and film-making. One of the most relevant problems with this practice is the fact that the viewers' opinions on a movie ALWAYS change after further thought! If they waited even just one day (ideally, several) before taking the viewers' opinions into account it would show a significant change in how they feel about the film.
@kaydwessie2964 жыл бұрын
Test Screenings are another disgusting byproduct of capitalism. Good art doesn’t go for a “demographic” Good art exists as it is whether you like it or not.

Doctor Speedweed, should they try a second test screening or another review with the same people? I feel like that'll give a more accurate view of the movie.
@dubitataugustinus4 жыл бұрын
@@nightynightlayla374 well, maybe they shouldn't have test screenings at all. Does it really work? those films that are made with the sole purpose of making money tend to be pretty mediocre imo. That said, some academic article suggested that the best situation would be to invite the viewers to watch the film and leave their phone/email, so they can be contacted and asked for their opinions later (I believe the study said a week was a reasonable time).
@nightynightlayla3744 жыл бұрын
Doctor Speedweed, I don't really think test screenings are a bad thing if you're refine the movie the best you can. Sometimes it's hard spot flaws in your own creation. I think it's the best to find good criticism so you can make it perfect as can be. The problem with Frozen 2 is that there's a dissonance with the creators' vision vs the target audience.
@dubitataugustinus4 жыл бұрын
@@nightynightlayla374 but how is a group of random kids more adept to criticize a film than the many professionals that work on it? There are editors for a reason. The only thing you test is your target demographic's ability to like/dislike a thing without having either time to process or the knowledge of the medium. Remember when Homer Simpson made his car the way he wanted? The product isn't better by appealing to the common denominator. The quality of a product relies on the talent and dedication of those who make it.

My husband's takeaway from ten minutes of the Frozen documentary was that he would never want to get stuck behind Jennifer Lee at Starbucks. I have to agree. She seems like a nightmare to work with when the cameras are off. She even shot down one of the lower animator's ideas in the documentary (the one that recorded herself running in order to animate Elsa) and then immediately turned around and tried to claim the idea as her own. The responsibility falls back on her for not finalizing the story sooner and no delaying the release. The movie wasn't ready, plain and simple.
