13:55 So, what you're saying to filmmakers who use CGI these days if roughly this: "The problem with the scientific power that you're using here, it didn't require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you patented it, and packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you're selling it, you're selling it."

Actually, the hunter in The Lost World had an introduction scene where he saves a woman from being raped, but it committed the crime of making him too likable for someone on the villains' side, so Spielberg tossed it and they were forced to throw in the exposition somewhere else.
@Samaru163
@Samaru163 9 жыл бұрын
Ryan Lohner Wasn't there also a scene with Peter Ludlow where we saw him speaking to the board of directors about their losses from the first film? I thought that did a much better job of explaining his case than the movie's introduction, which made him look like a generic bad guy in a suit.
@Rmlohner
@Rmlohner 9 жыл бұрын
Samaru onesixthree Yep. And one more: seeing Roland and Ajay capturing the baby T-Rex, during which Ajay accidentally breaks its leg. With that scene taken out, you get the impression they deliberately injured it so its cries would attract its parents, making Roland far less sympathetic. Spielberg really wasn't into anything beyond one-dimensional caricatures in this film.
@Samaru163
@Samaru163 9 жыл бұрын
Ryan Lohner Shame. I actually liked Roland and Ajay, despite Spielberg's attempts to make them unlikable, and I think developing them into interesting characters would have made Lost World a bit more bearable.

Literally just got back from Jurassic World, carefully veiled spoilers below! A: Overall, enjoyable for me. No one I talked to who saw it with me seemed disappointed. It's not the best movie ever, but it's a big step up from 2 and 3. B: CGI and props are not as good as the first movie. Funny enough, it felt like they move too fast and too fluid. It just doesn't have the weight it should. Even the obvious physical prop was so darn quick I couldn't buy it. Action scenes don't suffer though. It's not bad per say, but just not up to Jurassic Park. C: Holy smokes is there one scene where Doug's inner NC is gonna shout out with glee. I could hear him in my head singing out. D: Wow, the kids in this one are not horribly shoehorned in. I'm shocked. Though, some drama happens between them that's completely pointless and never comes up again. Uuuuh, editors? Ya there? Maybe a reaction to the actual drama would've padded better? Like that overly prolonged and gruesome death scene? Geeze, is this a Dino snuff film??? E: Michael Giacchino delivered majorly. Lots of scenes where I was ready to cringe at John Williams being reused for cheap, but was pleasantly surprised by original music more fitting to the scene. The soundtrack was perfect. F: "Hey guys, remember how good Jurassic Park was? Let's talk about how good Jurassic Park was now." (Funny enough, people in the theater seemed on board with that.) G: On a related note, the original stuff did do a great job drawing me in. It had enough new things to justify itself and wasn't just sucking up to the first movie. (What sequels?) H: *~product placement~* "Hey guys, corporation sponsorships are evil." *~product placement~* There were other things I noticed. Good dialog, bad dialog, but I think that covers the major points. Not a must see, but if you like Jurassic Park, hey it's good.

Two things you oughta know, Doug: 1. Don't worry, the director of Jurassic World, Colin Trevorrow, has confirmed there will be dinosaur animatronics in the movie. 2. Apparently Chris Pratt's whole "raptor whisperer" thing is a reference to the original novel where Dr. Wu, suggests to John Hammond that they alter the dinosaurs DNA to, and I quote, "slow them down and domesticate them."

jonny boi 'just got done watching it and the director is a liar. There were maybe two instances in the film that used animatronics. I wouldn't mind either but they explicitly said they were going to use alot of animatronics so I feel lied to. They knew that people liked the mixture of the two effects in the original movie so to get hardcore fans to go they said they were going to "capture the magic" of the original.

Chris Pratt isn't a "raptor whisperer", he raised them and they see him as the Alpha of their pack. It's like when you have dogs, they see you as the leader if their wolf pack. And the motorcycle jungle scene looks fucking badass.
@deadbynightupbylunch

Keaton Smith I wouldn't say dogs as much I would say Tigers. There are them people like Kevin Richardson who raise these animals and are aware of how dangerous these animals can be because they don't train them like dogs to behave, they respect them on a mutual level without insulting them. So even IF Chris was playing a "Raptor Whisperer" it doesn't annihilate the possibility that a dangerous animal would attack you. Especially a fucking dinosaur as ruthless and badass like a Velociraptor.

Cpt. Bald They aren't pure velociraptors, either. They're closer to Deinonychus in build, but since they had go do some splicing with frogs in the original, they came out with pebbly skin, like frogs. If the Jurassic Park scientists cracked the ENTIRE Velociraptor genome, they'd better get a Nobel Prize or something.

I was born in '93, and I grew up watching the Jurassic Park films. I also kinda like The Lost World, but I think that's more from nostalgia, and seeing a T-Rex tearing shit up in a city was fucking awesome. This is their thoughts about the movie while they were watching it the first time and or while writing the NC reviews, behind the scenes tid bits and tangents about other movies, its fun to hear them bicker on sibling rivalry as well. it's nice to just hear the brothers talk and have a real commentary.

As a kid, I knew not to trust companies thanks to the Alien Franchise. That's why I never had a problem with the T-Rex rampage scene at the end of Lost World. I always just assumed it was a weapons test. Plop a biological weapon into a densely populated area and pretend it was an accident. Hammond's nephew was clearly a money grubbing idiot and the board wanted to get rid of him like they got rid of Hammond. The rampage would really all fall on him. It's pretty obvious the T-Rex didn't kill that crew on the cargo ship. It couldn't have. The guy who was dumb enough to let the Rex out wasn't dumb, that's what he was told to do. It's all one big set up. Why would a company like that make Dinosaurs for a Zoo anyway? It was an accident while they were making some kinda weapon. Hammond just let imagination get the better of him. The Park was just a front for InGen's bioweapons division. Dr. Wu is clearly involved and so was D'Onofrio. It's all clear in Jurassic World. Granted I think there really isn't a master plan and they're exploiting the plot holes, but it does make sense.
@DarkOmicron
@DarkOmicron 7 жыл бұрын
Actually I think you're not far off in thinking that if we assume Biosyn, Ingen's rival company, starting to either infiltrate, merge, or buy shares regarding Ingen's board. They clearly want access to dinosaurs and it doesn't seem they want to build a park with them.
@nickstevens8596
@nickstevens8596 6 жыл бұрын
In the book, Hammond wanted to make a park because he thought it would be the best way to make money out of biotechnology, since he could charge customers whatever he wanted (something Gennaro says in the movie). He didn't want to make drugs because you couldn't charge too much for them and eventually you'll lose the patent.

Sorry, Jeff Goldblooms character arguing that nature got rid of Dinosaurs is pretty accurate. There is a reason they were wiped out even if the evolutionary part is bs. In the end he proved to be right because when trying to tame dinosaurs, they fail miserably. It's not like trying to tame the animals living in our time. Goldblooms character was right about that and I believe that in real life. I don't wanna live in a period where the T-Rex and the Raptors are alive. Fuck that!!!!

Come on, CGI now is MUCH better than it was in the past. Sure you have a few gems like JP or Starship troopers in the 90's, but most of it was shit. What makes it "look" bad is over reliance of CGI. Say what you will about Prometheus, it had some great special effects because it utilized both practical effects AND CGI. Same could be said for JP.
@Changeling9000
@Changeling9000 9 жыл бұрын
I get annoyed when they say CGI in a movie is fake and there's nothing there. You shouldn't complain about the effects being fake unless it's done horribly (Son of the Mask). It 's like complaining about Who Framed Roger Rabbit because all the cartoon characters are all just drawings.

Crazy Horse 9000 Yea, its all about suspending disbelief. When I watch ET running around, I know its an animatronic, but I dont care. I let myself believe there is an actual Alien running around knocking shit down. What makes CGI or practical effects bad is just as subjective as anything else in film. I liked the CGI in Avatar and bought into that world. Others hated it and felt no emotional connection to Pandora because they knew all they were seeing were computer animations.

My great nostalgic movie... if I could see one film for the first time again it would be Fellowship of the Ring. One month before Fellowship of the Ring I saw what I think was my first live action fantasy film ever which was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. At that point I thought Harry Potter was great and they did well with it and I was so amazed that they managed to bring Hogwarts to life. But then THAT happened at Christmas. And it was The Lord of the Rings that made me truly realize what film could do and how much it could blow your mind. I always liked movies of course, but when Lord of the Rings hit I understood the beauty of filmmaking. It was my generation's Star Wars and I'd love to have that feeling again.

Aww no word about Richard Attenborough's character, shame because he was what I really love about this movie. Why? Because it would have been so easy to make him a bad guy who doesn't care about how safe the park is as long as he makes a ton of money. But no he's a decent guy would just wants to give the world something truly amazing and by the end, even though he knows the idea of the park will not work, you really sympathise with him and feel bad that it didn't work out.

Ikr he just wanted to do something amazing and share it with the world. That scene at the end with all of them sitting in the helicopter, he is just staring at his amber cane with a “where did I go wrong” look on his face combined with the soft piano Jurassic park theme playing, you can really feel his sorrow and disappointment. He just wanted to give something to the world and it completely back fired and many people suffered for it. Just saying all this is almost bringing me to tears it’s done so well.

I think Jurassic World is going to be good. From what I read, Chris Pratt isn't supposed to be the "raptor whisperer". He made the raptors think he's the alpha of the pack. And the fact that they made a super dinosaur is new, inventive, and could lead to some awesome action scenes. I'm super excited to see how this unfolds.

Right? These guys are pretty entertaining on their own but when they get together, and I assume it's due to the competitive nature of two brothers, they just must talk over one another. It gives me a headache and you lose the point of the vid because it's just constant noise. I doubt they realise they are doing it because it's just the way they have always talked. But seriously it's like two different conversations going on at once. Be respectful to the other person when they are talking. Rob's Dr. Grant impression was really funny.

There is only ONE scene with an animatronic in _Jurassic World_. One of my few complaints with the new film. Just saw the new film tonight. It was the best sequel this franchise has gotten. I got chills, nostalgia, and randomly clapped at one point. Takes a lot for that to happen for me. 4/5

Rhett Gedies Exactly. The first sequel was incredibly stupid. Like... why is the T-Rex in the city? Why did they put her in a ship going to the city? That's stupid. Not to mention that scene where the kid sees the T-Rex from his room.... The second sequel was.... eh. My few complains with Jurassic World is the forced romance and the movie felt short to me.

Another reason 3's better than Lost World is its setup actually makes sense, unlike Lost World. In 3, they at least have a legit reason for going to the island. In Lost World they just wanted to document the dinosaurs to save InGen from bankruptcy, which was a really weak motive that didn't even make sense, especially for Dr. Malcom to go after the events of the first film. In 3, they go to find the missing son on the island. So 3 at least did improve on the setup from Lost World.

It has maybe one or two redeeming moments but for the most part it's a disaster.

The reason for the second island is because the second book is a sequel to the first movie, but still tried to have continuity from the first. In the first book, the island is nuked or something like that, and the main two characters were supposed to die. However, they survived in the movie and because everyone loved Jeff Goldbloom, the author decided that he would keep them alive, but move it to a second island to keep the continuity of the first island being blown up. Then the second movie was based off of the second book, so they moved to a new island without the explanation of the original ending of the book. Basically, they didn't need to move it to a new island. PSI actually liked the mobile phone horror 'mechanic' from the 3rd movie. That was it.

I agree with them on everything they said about the first movie. I disagree with them about the worst line in the second movie. The worst line in the second movie (in my opinion) is when Malcolm and company take the baby T-Rex back to their trailer, the baby's parents come to get their baby back and Malcolm says "Mommy's very angry." I'm like yeah...you just invaded the dinosaur's island, attacked them, and then you were foolish enough to steal the baby of the most bad-ass dinosaur on the island, break his leg and hold him captive in your trailer. OF COURSE she is going to be pissed and throw you off a cliff. lol The Lost World was insulting to me....Jurassic Park 3 was boring and painfully irritating. The only sequel in my opinion that is a worthy successor to the original Jurassic Park was Jurassic World....because they had the courage to try new things (like the genetic hybrid and Chris Pratt as a Raptor Whisperer). Some of it was silly, but that last scene with the Motherfucking T-Rex more than made up for it.

Just one thing to mention is The Lost World never tried to paint John Hammond as being a villain. The only reason Ian said to Peter "Now you're John Hammond" was that he jumped in with the same ideas that John Hammond had. Assuming he had control of the dinosaurs, but he didn't, and people were dying because of it. You weren't supposed to hate John Hammond at that point.

I had quite a phase of Michael Crichton books (and the movies based thereon) back in my tweens. I kind of agree that his stories are more great ideas and the characters are mostly cut-outs. That may be why I eventually grew out of them. In regards to one of the points that neither sequel advances the story at all, I will contend that TLW (the movie) does add a little bit more than JP3, in that it's the first time the public becomes aware of the dinosaurs. The story has a bigger scope and the stakes are higher - more lives are on the line than in any of the other movies. I also never minded that the whole movie was "dark". It was more of an exploration/survival story and most of the action took place at night, which if you think about it is a pretty scary time to be running from raptors. To shoot that scene in the day time would just be repeating what we already saw. Also, "no fences this time" was a set-up they hadn't done yet, so we did finally get to see how the dinosaurs would behave in the wild. It's possible that I wasn't bothered by the problems of TLW as a kid because I was caught up in all the JP and dinosaur hype and I was still quite young. There was a lot of marketing too, as I recall - who didn't want all the dinosaur toys back then? And the most important thing for a kid at least was getting to see new dinosaurs and new situations for them. I realize it doesn't hold up as well now but I'll take it over JP3 in which has almost nothing going for it.

I pulled him back down into his seat, and we were hugging so tightly for comfort. I will try to explain why I find The Lost World to be a guilty pleasure, and a movie I actually enjoy, because I enjoy more than just the movie itself, but a lot of things that were associated with the film as well as my viewing of the film in theaters with my father: First of all, the first Jurassic Park is one of my most favorite movies of all time. I've seen it more times than I can count probably. Own the entire DVD Box set of the first 3 movies, the cool one with the doors to the park on the cover. BUT, I WAS TOO YOUNG TO HAVE SEEN THIS IN THEATER. Jurassic Park came out in 93 I think? I was 2 years old at the time. But by the time The Lost World had come around, I had probably seen it a dozen times already, maybe more. Had it on VHS even. SO, THE LOST WORLD was the FIRST JURASSIC PARK I saw in theaters, and I also saw it with my dad at the time, one of the first films I ever saw with my dad in theaters ever. I also read both the books, and didn't mind The Lost World book too much. On top of this, I played THE LOST WORLD PC GAME that came bundled with my old school Gateway computer in what, 99 or something? AS WELL I HAD THE BOARD GAME THAT I WOULD PLAY WITH MY FAMILY A LOT. It was a decent board game, and it was really neat because you would have paper "houses" that you had setup, you would move your characters/dinosaurs on top of roofs, behind stuff, etc to eat people, escape, etc. We played this board game QUITE A BIT WHEN I WAS YOUNGER. If anyone else here had the board game, you understand what I'm talking about.: it was quite a "spectacle" of a board game Lot going on there, and it was fun to play. SO having played the game so much (a kinda standard type of "RTS lite"? I'll call it. Easy game in retrospect, but I had tons of fun as a kid playing a DECENT JURASSIC PARK GAME compared to all the other ones that existed, alongside of it being one of the first "blockbusters" I saw with my father when I was young, make it a movie that has a place in my heart. NOT A GOOD MOVIE, thats for sure., but when you combine all 3 of these elements: playing HOURS UPON HOURS of the game as a young kid,, being one of the first blockbusters I saw in theaters ever, WITH MY FATHER nonetheless (hes not a big theater guy at all, I think this might be one of the only movies I've seen with him in theaters, ever, 26 years into my life), to it being a board game I played a TON with my family, ON TOP OF IT being a sequel TO ONE OF MY MOST FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME, makes The Lost World have a special place in my heard. Both as a guilty pleasure as well as a movie I somewhat enjoyed watching because I saw it with my father. Sorry this is a long post, but considering the big four reasons for my enjoyment of The Lost World, I felt I had to delve into it a bit. Sequel to one of my most favorite movies of all time+one of the first blockbusters I ever saw in theaters WITH MY DAD nonetheless, combined with both the PC game as well as the board game, makes it one of my guilty pleasure movies that I will always enjoy, albeit with the gained knowledge that it is a bad film after studying film for a few years at school.

In some editions of the Jurassic Park DVD (and surely a tv program somewhere) there is some very interesting behind the scenes information about how they made the movie. At first it was going to be stop-motion animation with clay dinosaurs, but it looked just a bit too clunky for Spielberg and others. That's when they decided to make the full shift to CGI, and the early T-Rex CGI test was fantastic. The way they did the Gallimimus scene was cool too. The one time the CGI falls just a little short, imo, is the final T-Rex shot. It's just barely noticeable. But holy shit, the T-Rex intro in the rain, that made me start sweating. It holds up so fucking well. Directors back then knew how to keep a scene quiet to build suspense, not have a fucking orchestra tell you "HEY ITS SCARY NOW, BE SCARED!"
