Hey Jim, thanks for the great videos! I found a passion for this kind of thing a few years ago and it's become a bit of an obsession. My income is low, and my home is a single wide mobile-home, but I own it! I'm planning to build the entire interior out as a space ship. After MUCH internal debate I've decided to mostly use a design heavily inspired by the MCRN (The Expanse) aesthetic, because in addition to it looking like a space ship I want it to actually look NICE in it's own right. Greeble will be in the nooks and crannies rather than the main attraction. The thing I've most been struggling with is the flooring, and the ceiling. I had pretty much decided (despite wanting something better) to use the black vinyl diamond plate looking garage floor mats. I've used these for under my motion simulator and they look great. Still, I really wanted grates! I love your solution here, I even own two of those exact shelving units! I will have to see whether or not it's practical to incorporate them or something similar, given the fact that this will be an actual full time living "space" (hahaha. Sorry) instead of just a set which means wear and tear, the need for vacuuming, and it needing to both be safe for and not stress out my 14 pound dog! If anyone is wondering how I can get away with this, I got divorced two years ago now and discovered how much I enjoyed being single after 24 years of being not-single. I decided "It's going to stay that way!", and after two years have had no second thoughts. =) I've been having a blast working on my projects, and only having to compromise with the pooch and the credit card companies. ;P

I've also used some wide strips of mirror plex (hidden from camera) to reflect overhead light back "up" onto the set and characters as fill light..and also to create a creepier feel for certain shots. (Bottom-lit stuff is often very effective---as I'm sure you know---for scary scenes, as it tend to make people ---and/or creatures---take on a more sinister quality).

Another thing you can use to extend your corridor is use a mirror. It's good for an establishing shot.

I would also advise people to really think about how things would be designed. It may look cool for there to be a bunch of crap on the walls, but that would be extremely atypical for any kind of corridor. Corridors are for people to travel through. There's a reason we don't just stick breaker boxes and so on in the middle of our hallways. The same general logic applies to spaceships too, and when things deviate from the patterns we recognize, we, on some level at least, notice. And while the rule of cool largely applies, at some point, a lack of sensibility does hurt your work. You don't have to be realistic, but people still don't want nonsense.

It does seem like the current wall dressing is made for something like an intentional b-movie or a self ironic piece (or an NC review, hint hint...). But that's why the modularity is useful. For a serious science fiction theme you could use just the panelling from the lower panes or something like it (maybe add a green screened fake lcd)

This! +1. That said, spaceships, like airliners, are space-limited and pressure vessels. Rooms have to be tube shaped to contain air pressure, so room/corridor distinction isn't always there. Corridors in real vehicles are always multipurpose, since an empty corridor makes the vehicle bigger than otherwise needed (easier to target, harder to maneauver).

My two cents concerning art direction: In its current state, it looks a bit noisy and messy but if you're just looking for a Generic SciFi Corridor® that's totally fine. If you limit yourself to certain shapes (e.g. just big angular styrofoam pieces) or limit your palette to, say, only painted Gatorade bottles and egg cartons, it may look more coherent and distract less from the actors in the foreground. Save the circuit boards and blinking lights for your "data center" or "engine room" sets. ;)
