I don't like being criticised but I am listening, I don't lash out or shout like Narcs do.

Such an important topic... Looking forward to this one. Criticism is usually received as a personal attack and vindictive by the narcissist if it challenges anything that most balanced or thoughtful people would take into consideration and make corrections if warranted.

They will also interpret something you said as criticism even when you're not actually criticizing them at all. It's their paranoia that gets them. They are avoiding toxic shame. They often cause the very thing that they are avoiding.

Narcissistic collapse. I experienced this 2 yrs ago with my husband of 13 yrs. He then went into a seething rage that lasted 1.5yr while i endured his narcissistic abuse. It’s like his mask came off once and for all. I am so perplexed by this despite having done so much research on the topic-how could he so drastically change so quickly? And then never return to the masked person who at least could be nice and agreeable? Now I’m left with an unapologetic, antagonistic ahole. In hindsight and after consuming thousands of hours of education on the topic, i believe what preceded the narcissistic collapse was a direct and pointed harsh criticism from me to him of something that had been building for quite some time for me and i didn’t hold back. Well i have sure as hell paid the price now! We have young kids which makes it very hard to leave. I have also learned through all of my educating that my mother is a malignant narcissist or narcissistic sociopath, and my father is a narcissist. My father in law is also a narcissist and my MIL is a huge enabler of him. To say i am enmeshed is an understatement. I feel like all of my structures as I’ve known them are crumbling around me. Although i feel strong and my kids keep me going, i feel like i have a lot of people around me trying to bend me until i break and sometimes i dont know how much more i can take, as i already feel like a shell of myself. I am learning to set boundaries and often calling out behavior (which i think i have to stop bc it just makes it harder for me to deal with their wrath); my family is not liking me setting boundaries. I don’t know how i will get out of this and keep my kids as best protected as i can

Is he still nice outside of the home? Does he still wear the mask for others? They often don't even try to mask up at home.

Thankyou Darren great videos. Your channel popped up today and I have returned to binge watching. I've been away for 2+ years trying to heal, and I'm doing Ok. I joined a social group and found some great friends, something the narc didn't allow me to have friends. I'm free now 3 years others in the group have varied personally traits. Some others in group I get a blue light flashing off in my brain. I met my narc when I was 14 years old, I've just celebrated my 70th. I try not to think of the lost years. I'm a survivor 😊

I just started watching again as well. I believe that when other people say certain things to me it's like a trigger, and I jump back in to watch for awhile as a kind of therapy. I have been divorced for a few years myself. Once you see it, it can be a bit too easy to see those tendencies in others. And Happy Birthday! Glad you are free! 🎉

I just discovered this channel recently. I love your voice. It's very soothing. Sort of ironic given the grave nature of the subject matter is in contrast to the tranquil way the information is being delivered.

Organizing my space, I took a few (unsolicited) good ideas from my narcissist. When I said one idea didn’t make sense and I was going to do something else, she took it personally, threw her hands out in a martyr pose and said, “fine, if you want to keep struggling go ahead” and turned it into my character flaw because I didn’t want to do her thing. She talks a lot about me dealing with the log in my eye, which is ironic because she has a ton of issues to deal with that she blames me for.

Since you are not interacting with a narcissist, or thinking about or acknowledging her existence, you don't need to worry about criticism, what she thinks or anything else. With narcissists, noninteraction is the best and only solution. If interaction is legally necessary, only in writing and in dry ice cold, stripped, bare necessity clinical words as few as possible.

I really enjoy these videos; I feel like all the things I’ve not been able to express, were confused by, got blamed & attacked for have actually been heard & validated!! 🙏🏻❤️ Bless!! I also enjoy playing them when my narc “husband” - who is now on Day 3 of the Silent Treatment 🙄 - is in the room. I used to turn the volume down so he didn’t get offended, but now I don’t care. My existence offends him. There’s freedom in knowing that baseline because it makes everything else I feel the need to do for myself permissible. 😅

It's so sad they can't accept criticism. I know I struggled to learn how for a long time, because I grew up modeling the behavior of my narcissistic parents. So now I am wondering, in theory, who corrects their enemy? No one. Criticism is advice on how to become a better person. When they can't accept criticism, they are in effect doubling down on their poor behavior. Of course they end up alone, because they've rejected a lifetime self improvement opportunities. It also makes sense their self-esteem would be so fragile, because it's built upon such a dilapidated foundation. It's an odd feeling to be more mature than one's parents.

Narcissist has two self-images, one fake, in which they feel entitled, superior, and flawless, and the other, real, in which narcissist is just another imperfect, insecure, faulty, struggling human like other people. When criticized, narcissist defends the fake self-image that does not exist. How does such behavior even make sense?

Hi Darren, thank again for all of you efforts and generosity in sharing. I wanted to ask youu= a question that keeps eating away at me. Can a narcissist have muliple targets that they are controlling, and if they can, is it common or uncommon? I know you are busy, I have not heard anyone ever mention it, so I assumed it was no, but I don't know for sure, and I try not to assume.

I'm not an expert, but I would surmise that most narcissists have backup supply sources. They get supply from positive and negative sources. The negative source is those who tangle with them and the positive source is those who buy their BS (flying monkeys).

I feel their fear of criticism stems from the all or nothing mindset. If you stand in the all section, you can’t say enough. If you are suddenly back in the nothing section, wether you speak or remain silent, it’s criticism 😅
