My maternal grandparents met when they were 15 years old, dated for six years, and they were married for 45 years. There are roughly 40 couples in my faith community, married/together for anywhere between five years and 50+ years. I know they are friends as well as parents, lovers, partners, etc.

They have too strong a sense of civic duty, and abdication would throw the country and the Commonwealth into constitutional chaos. A further point is that if the Monarch were to abdicate, there is a possibility that his or her descendants would be removed from the line of succession. Thus, if this were so, and Charles abdicated, his sons William and Harry would not be eligible for the Throne, and it would pass to his brother Andrew. I can’t find any definite answer to this question, and since there’s no complete written British Constitution, it would presumably be a case of “suck it and see”!

He didn't gaslight Diana, that's a media construct. She didn't even love Charles, she had contempt for him as she herself admitted in the "Diana Tapes". What ruined their marriage was a combination of Charles being a character with little emotional range and Diana's personality disorder known since childhood that made her an extremely difficult person to deal with, narcissistic, clingy, self-centered, manipulative, spiteful, wayward, bipolar, ruminative and prone to rage fits and drama. The RF was horrified by her dramatic behaviour, being the cyborgs deprived of emotional depth they are. No two more incompatible persons could ever be matched as Charles and Diana were and if anyone is to blame should be the Spencers for two reasons: pretending nothing was wrong with Diana because of mental health stigmatisation failing to provide her proper psychiatric care since childhood (I guess that would also spoil her chances of a future high status marriage), and not informing the Windsors about her true nature. I guess the pressures of being bankrupt and Althorp being slowly decaying from lack of costly maintenance spoke lowder than morality and pushed Diana into a marriage she was unfit for. Despite not being particularly clever, I have to give it to her she played the victim card masterfully and to this day people judge her an innocent victim. She wasn't. She was a gold-digger dazzled by the perspective of what she wrongfully thought it would be a life of luxury and privilege as Princess and future Queen.

Many tears were cried and much suffering was endured by the wives and children of those married men whose marriages she destroyed. If Diana was so hurt by Charles' affair with Camilla and if she had any morals she wouldn't be sleeping around with married men. She didn't even pause to think about the immense shame and embarrassment her own two boys felt knowing her mother was sleeping around with married men or the mean gossip from schoolmates the boys had to witness. Charles, on the other hand, had only one affair with the woman who was the love of his life, which according to Lady Campbell was a mere friendship and only started to be a sexual relationship after Diana's first adulterous affair. Diana knew perfectly well about his longtime friendship with Camilla but her paranoid jealousy and adulterous behaviour ended up pushing Charles to a romance with Camilla.
