@@DonLee-pv2kq when they were writing MOP, Kirk's solo thats ends with Cliffs solo was originally written by Kirk or Cliff (i cant remember the full story currently), Cliff tried to convince them that he should play it all on bass and they settled on splitting it, Kirk playing the first half and Cliff ending it. Cliff's songwriting and musical theory knowledge were such an underrated part of what made that era of Metallica truly legendary. His songwriting worked in so much classical influence that James and Lars just don't have. I love the consciously progressive spng structures and pute aggression of Justice, but when Cliff died an extremely significant piece of wbat made Metallica special went with him. His skill on his instrument speaks for itself, but Jason and Rob are exceptional players in their own right. His songwriting was what truly elevated the band.

You need to look up “akroasis solo on bass.” This guy perfectly plays one of the most bonkers guitar solos I’ve ever heard on a bass guitar. That solo is already regarded as practically impossible on guitar, so the fact that they’re playing it on bass guitar, which has much higher string tension and requires a higher action than a guitar and thus is harder to shred and tap on, is just astonishing.

You know. When I first heard Orion, it didn't take me much to decide that, if there's a song to be played, this is the song that's gonna be played at my funeral. That was 4 years ago, back in summer 2016. I haven't changed my choice ever since. It also marked the start of my interest in bass. I looked up Cliff's clean bass track (without the other instruments), and have listened to it more times than I can rememeber. I also learned that Cliff originally played the piano and that this also influenced his playing style. As someone who also plays the piano, I found this wonderful. And I started loving bass, realising that a whole world was opening up before me. I started actively looking for basslines in music and realised just how much of an impact a good bass line can have on the piece of music. I started getting better audio equipment and now I just couldn't imagine to enjoy music without solid bass (at least where it's expected). While I may not start playing bass myself, I certainly have started to feel a desire to pick it up. It's just, that I have just enough time for one instrument, and I do love playing piano with all my heart, but thanks to Cliff, seeing how playing piano can affect how you play bass, I want to believe that I at least have bass in my heart. All of these emotions welled up within me after hearing your solo bass cover. It's a wonderful arrangement for possibly one of my favourite pieces of music of all time and wonderfully captured the spirit that I love so much about this piece. Thank you so much for this.

@Machine Maker Many people listen to Metallica but not everyone hears... I’ve been a bass player since I was 12. I’m turning 50 in a couple days. Cliff was my hero growing up and still is. Most people play his stuff in tribute and I say God speed, but that brought a tear to my eye. If I understand correctly, everything you played was his arrangement. You played the whole damn thing at once. Incredible. I reckon Jaymes and the boys ought to invite you on stage to perform that in honour of the man who wrote it.

@@CharlesBerthoud James' guitar solo around that section is purely phenomenal; so beautiful, so touching, yet it's almost bittersweet. It has a lot of emotion and feeling behind it; like James has a lot of meaningful things to say, but has little time to say it, so he gets right to the point. It's as if James is telling Cliff his "last goodbyes", and by the very end of the solo, James lets Cliff know that he's now free to Ascend; then it happens. That's how I've always interpreted the solo, and I always will.
