The reason these towns along Lake Okeechobee are so poor and will be the last places in South Florida to gentrify or be developed into condos is bc it’s an hour’s drive from either the Atlantic or the Gulf, therefore it gets very hot and humid w/ no beach around and will forever be cheap enough for lower income folks to live in as the rich and upper middle class flock to the beach towns.

10:34 I used to live on this street in 2023 in the light-blue building to the right. I lived here because I needed a place to stay during that time. I never went out of my unit, especially at night, unless I had important errands to run. I slept through nights where I've heard gunshots, women screaming for help, power outages, and hooliganism. Not everyone I met was dangerous, though. There were many cool neighbors as well. It's a town where everyone is always sussing each other out, and for good reason. I'm relieved I no longer live there, but I hope and pray for the city to improve and for the people to escape poverty.
