I’m an alcoholic (dry) and I can confirm that some people really judge you for not drinking when you go out. I had friends who made fun of me. And one friend who straight up told me that I was selfish for not buying and gifting his party a 24 case of beers; because I should spend my money on the party. I was so annoyed because one of the really nice things about being sober was that I wasn’t broke all the time and could buy some nice things for myself like video games and cat trees.

Due to some family history, I don’t drink and I never have. The only people that have ever bother me about drinking are people I’m basically related to (one almost sister and my cousin’s husband. I don’t talk to the almost sister much anymore for various reasons, but the rest of the family who used to have mostly stopped)

I could take a few jokes, but if they are straight up bothered by you being sober then I don't think you need them as friends. Some of my friends are the heavy-drinker, party-goer, ex frat people type, and I have always been a one drink person. They never said a thing. They even exclude me of the bill splitting because they know it will be a lot for something I did not want - I just pay for my part. Sounds like I'm bragging about them because I am, I love them. These are the people you want to party with.

I wonder if some of these people started young and never stopped. I didn't drink at all until it was legal for me, and didn't drink much until older. Never have I pressured people to drink, and it feels like these people are projecting too hard. I will never get the "need to drink" to do things. The "I love dancing, but I need to drink first," or "you can't have fun without a drink." No, that is a literal you problem that should involve some self reflection.

For the dad math one, we were both crying because he can’t do math either. But I once had an AWFUL maths teacher who hated children and couldn’t teach so my dad tried his best to help me, we were getting the right answers. When I went back to class and did it my dad’s way and was getting the right answers, the teacher ripped my work out of my textbook and said “that’s not the way that I showed you, start over” so I crossed my arms and did nothing. Sometimes dads deliver and teachers do not

i had two different math teachers....same class, algebra 1. one was at the beginning, the other at the second half/end. i had passed the first class fine and even had fun with the teacher and liked him. but i had wanted to get a little more practice with some areas i had trouble with, like percentages in particular, but also the sine, cosine and tangent. this second teacher undid all of what i learned with the other one to teach "his way" and when i got more lost and confused, he got mad at me because i was failing. i dropped out of the class and took a special class to make up english credits instead since i didn't have enough to graduate.

I remember my dad helping me with a math assignment. We were supposed to be giving answers with "remainders," but my dad showed me how to do decimals. Which is ultimately right anyway. But the teacher gave me an "F" because we weren't taught decimals yet. It was so stupid! My brother once told me that he did math where the answer was a negative number, but at that grade level we weren't supposed to know about that yet and he and the other students were supposed to answer that it was impossible. He was right with negatives because he had logic. But the teacher failed his assignment. I recall he just stopped doing any homework for the teachers because of stupid stuff like that. Mainly when he missed one assignment and they called our parents assuming they were involved in our homework at home. They almost never were. Never with him, only a couple times with me ("Do your homework or you're grounded!"). It pissed him off so he stopped all together. I got lazy with homework too, but I do just fine on tests so they never got on my case.

Did that thrice and never again, instead of going straight to the point he would give 5 hour long lessons just for one question forgetting that i have other assignments to complete, give my practice questions expecting me to do them at that moment and me falling asleep in class the next day all because I didn’t get any sleep trying to complete my home work 😢.

my dad was awesome with math. he could do the most complicated equations, as long as it didn't involve letters. once the letters came in, he was lost. but you give him any normal multiplication, addition, subtraction or all of them combined and he would get it instantly. a shame he never graduated past 8th grade though.

I used to be a bartender, for anyone who doesn't drink, most of us are happy to fake your drink to look alcoholic. Sometimes that's easier than everyone asking you why you aren't drinking. We can make you a mocktail (aka virgin drink) that looks and even tastes like a mixed drink, or it can be as simple as putting it in a different glass and adding a slice of fruit! People see a lime or lemon wedge and will just assume it's alcoholic. We also carried the non-alcoholic beer at every place I've worked, which you may be surprised how much we'd sell. So don't be afraid to ask your bartender, they're usually happy to help and know lots of tricks. If you need an easy excuse that people won't question, just say you're the designated driver, as people tend to respect that at least. 💗

I was a bridesmaid for a “friend” 13 years ago. My baby was 14 months old. I didn’t want to be a bridesmaid as I had never had a good experience in the past but thought I would do something for me and it would be fun as we knew eachother for years. I was nursing and she knew that. I had told her I was not going to drink and she respected that. Unfortunately it was the wedding party. I was bullied, peer pressured, told I was a prude. Then her aunt threw up on me and that was the stag. The wedding I was ignored and I didn’t go to the gift opening as her friends were so mean to me. None of them had kids. Years later when she had a baby she apologized and said she felt horrible but she and I are not friends now. What if I was a recovering alcoholic? Me not wanting to drink because I was nursing was my choice. Still mad to this day.

As a former TSA officer: I was regularly accused of being a thief and a perv by travelers who didn't bother to learn the rules before showing up. I was called other rude names when I wouldn't let people skip the line just because they were late. We chose our shifts in order of seniority so most new people started work between 2-5am. Management would constantly change requirements and HR was a joke. Most people there are dying inside. 😬

Well I actually had this old guy who had his older female coworker pat me down because I was wearing a Chevron print dress...I asked another TSA agent at a different airport and she was also weirded out by that. She said that shouldn't have happened. The one who patted me down was even asking him why she had to pat me down. I felt violated and I had my 6 month old with me too. My mom was there and asked can I ask you why you're patting down my daughter? They legit didn't say why. Edit: had another instance where the TSA guy was telling my husband to go ahead of me when he was helping me break down the stroller since we had two littles. Rude much? Like me doing everything by myself while having to watch the kids was going to make the line go faster.

Really? That's sad. Also, I hate the random checks that they do. I had that happen when my mom, myself and my grandma went to Florida about 10 years ago, before Covid happened. My grandma was randomly selected to do a body check and that was so stupid and unnecessary. She also had to throw away some really expensive lotion and shampoo or something but that was her own fault because she accidentally put it in her carry-on instead of her checked bag. I was amazed she didn't think it through and the product was worth a lot of money too. TSA are crazy. I hope when I fly again, I don't get "randomly selected" for a search. if they do, I'll comply but I don't want that happening.

The girl who’s late reminds me of a pretentious girl from my High school. one time she was 20 minutes late to class and as she walked in she interrupted the lesson and to loudly say “sorry I’m late, I got a record deal!” She said it so casually too like she was trying to not make a big deal out of it but clearly wanted everyone to know. Nobody cared or said anything (it was the first class of the day) and the teacher just said “good for you” before going back to the lesson. Looked her up, 10 years later and it doesn’t look like anything came from that “record deal” (she was an ok singer btw)

Comparison is the thief of joy, sometimes even when we compare ourselves to our younger selves. All you can do is be better today than you were yesterday and it sounds like that is what your are aiming for. I don’t like blaming other stuff in my life because it gives away what little power I have in my life. So instead, I find the low hanging fruit. What is the one thing I can do today that could easily be done every day, incorporated into my routine, that will make my life better? There is no one size fits all approach, unfortunately. One thing I have found is the only thing that works for improvement long term, is what works for YOU and that you can maintain because at the end of the day, you are the one consistent agent of change in your life.

Omg that POV of your dad helping with homework hit so hard. When I was learning to read my dad would yell at me for not knowing words I had never seen written before. He made me cry so hard when I was 5 because I couldn't understand how to read the word "ocean". That's a hard word to try and figure out when you've never seen it spelled out before and instead of telling me what it was he just yelled at me for not being able to understand. He would also yell at me for getting words wrong (I'm dyslexic) and he said that I was just a "lazy reader" Edit: he also yelled at me in kindergarten for not understanding a riddle he gave me to help me with my homework. It was a worksheet where different math answers were associated with letters to spell something out. The answer was "Peanut butter". The riddle he gave me was "It's a type of butter that's brown" what 5 year old would logically come to the conclusion of peanut butter? I was standing there thinking about a brown stick of frickin butter and confused af and he was mad that a child that could barely read didn't understand him

Exactly my situation with a knife at airport security 🤣 I was a teenager travelling with my mom. I carried a pocket knife in my backpack in case we bought fruit and decided to eat them. But I forgot to put it into our checked-in luggage and it was not in an obvious pocket. When security lady couldn't find it, I wanted to help and direct her, but she was really aggressive with me. Since then I'm feeling anxious every time I go through security. But of course I understand her.

My dad is from Iceland, and so ive been there many times while growing up. LAst time i went i was 13, we were coming back in to the states through the Baltimore Airport. The security people forcefully separated me (a very stressed, anxious, autistic kid) from my parents to fill out immigration(?) papers or something. I was half-way crying and shaking and sweating and I didnt understand why my parents didnt ask for me. I filled out the paper work and finally got through, but oh man. i was terrified. It was after 9-11 so every TSA agent had a firecracker up their butts about everything. Honestly ruined my desire to fly anywhere. Any other time i've flown i've been in full panic mode. Oh i also flew to iceland alone once and got to watch a TSA agent tackle and beat a lady into the ground for not removing her jewelry while they were checking my bags. I think it was also at the Baltimore airport. At this rate. i think i'll just Astral Project to Iceland.

I feel you Nyx... I come from a French-Canadian family. My mother is fluent in French, but never spoke it to us kids. Consequently when I started taking French in school... I went to her for help. She wondered why I couldn't speak French or have the right accent...."I was French-Canadian after all." She thought I would learn it through osmosis! She treated me like I was stupid and refused to help me. (I know now that she was embarrassed as my inability reflected on her as a parent.) She became good friends with my French teacher ... and he could never figure out why I was not getting more confident in my French speaking... as "I had such a great mom to practice with."🙄 I also learned not to ask for help or speak up... I was afraid of being humiliated and called stupid.

She used to buy me gifts of clothing 1 size too small... to motivate and inspire me... and then would say things like.."Are you sure you want to wear that??". No matter what is on my plate food wise... she would always say "Are you sure wou want to eat that ." Now that I eat whole, clean foods... she always says what an inconvenience it is to make meals when I visit. (Even though I bring all my own food and help prepare meals). "It's always something with you!" It's a NO-WIN situation. I even used to let her complaining about my healthy food and eating habits derail me from my health journey... I don't do that anymore! I would also make sure I had enough time to go to Starbucks or wherever and get my coffee and then go to class but I wouldn't be late. That's rude and disrespectful. I was late plenty without the coffee, honestly and I thought it was tacky anyway. Those girls are losers who will never accomplish anything in their lives.

The one about being a b-word as a teen, that wasn't me. I never went through the "terrible two" or was mean as a teen. Not sure if has to do with the fact that I have autism, but from the time I started kindergarten at 4, my mind was basically 100% focused on getting through the day and then I fell asleep at home. So, maybe I didn't have enough energy, or my mental capacity was too drained?

@@KarmatheCorgi There is a difference between the rare disciplinary smack and real physical abuse. So many people seem to confuse the two. I'm sure I'll end up getting lambasted for this, but sometimes it's necessary. Sometimes you exhaust every alternate form of discipline, and literally the only thing you can do to get the kid to listen and stop misbehaving is to give them a swat. As long as it's a rare last resort, and as long as it doesn't leave any marks, I see nothing wrong with it.

"The friend that's unnecessarily mean to their parent." Within the first sentence I would have been on the ground! I'm honestly stunned at the fact that people talk to their parents like that! I had to watch it four times to see if I heard it right! 🤣 Although my momma taught me that your children will be double the trouble you were for your parents! Good luck to the kids who grew up disrespectful. ❤ Your gonna need it! 🤣

I had an airport worker who was SO INCREDIBLY MEAN TO ME for no reason I started crying in the airport lol. I went to go walk onto the flight and she basically arm barred me and told me to step back. I asked her why and she said “BECAUSE I SAID SO” and she proceeded to let everyone on the plane before me while she scowled at me. She acted like I murdered her first born but I had never met this lady!!!!! Edit; this was at the Billy bishop airport In Toronto

I really related with that drinkers/non drinkers one, except with coffee. I don't drink coffee and everyone's like "WHAT!!!?? How can you not drink coffee!? Aren't you grown up? (I'm 43, but... no?...) I am not even myself until I get a cup of coffee in the morning!" Well, I am myself when I wake up, and I can stay awake all day by just being me. Same with my kids, they’d NEVER even think about it. They barely even raise their voice with me, they know I gave them life & deserve respect. The same respect I had for my parents.

I once got stopped for a secondary search by TSA because when I left from visiting my mom, she gave me large pickle & a slice of homemade pound cake. I put them in my carry on bag on top of a book. The TSA agent was cool he and I both laugh when he opened my bag and he saw what was in the bag. I called my mom when I got to my gate and told she almost got me put on the "no fly" list. She just laugh and blame it on my book. To this day I triple check my carry on to make sure I have everything is correct.

I literally went through a hellish, highly abusive summer bootcamp for math with my NF. It was so bad my mother sent me to regular summer camp for the last two weeks of summer cuz he was so abusive and he slipped up and acted like that towards me in front of her. Was not conducive to an ADHD person to learn math, to be sure. I only did well in math afterwards cuz I was terrified to do badly and him take over 'teaching' me again.

I was half way through a 14 hour flight from Heathrow, and found a lighter in my bag. I didn't know it was even in there and must have been from a previous trip. Anyway, the airline had specifically stated no lighters and matches or things of that nature on board, for obvious reasons, yet I got through customs with it! This still haunts me to this very day!!

I used to try to teach my sister how to do Maths. She would be bawling by the end of it. I literally could not figure out how she did not understand decimals and fractions. Later, I found out that I was just naturally gifted at Maths so there was no way I would have been able to explain to her how to do something I could just instinctively "see". It was like trying to teach a colourblind person how to see red.

@@battlebear437 Oh, I hope they don't make you feel bad because they are in the minority. A lot of the time people who think they are bad a maths are actually average at maths, they are just comparing themselves to people who are gifted at maths. I saw that a lot when I was a teacher. Kids who would be hyper-stressed because they were constantly being compared to gifted siblings when, in fact, they were actually good at maths just not brilliant.

I knew a few of these types in college too who never really grew out of it. Still continue to encounter these folks in grad school and beyond. . .typically in something to do with music or the arts though.
