I was a nanny for parents who worked for the CIA. They paid me more money per hour than I make today--and this was 2007! When the kids went to camp for a week, they still paid me. For having a week off! They went on a cruise, (their girls were older and they didn't really need help when the parents were able to be with them) and they paid me for that week too--and brought me gifts back! Not all rich folks are awful! 😊

working for the CIA, they 1) Probably were more well-off than rich-rich unless they had family wealthy, and 2) Knew the importance of well-compensating assets so they don't turn on you. It really is just smart to make sure someone in your employ has a comfortable living so they don't have to get a second job...say, selling information about you to a foreign agent.

Meanwhile, I had a pretty good nanny job for a summer, and they'd planned to keep me on part-time come the school year when their youngest started kindergarten and I went back to college. The dad was antitrust counsel for Microsoft and worked out of town a lot, and they'd previously only had au pairs. They had a formal living room, dining room, and kitchen and a family living room, dining room, and kitchen. The kids had a giant playroom, and there was a mini theater on the top floor. The mom didn't work (despite having a law degree herself), so I was there while she went to her various charity board meetings and I don't know what else. They ended up letting me go at the end of the summer because they decided the mom needed to have another adult living there for when the husband was away. They were going back to having an au pair because, GASP!, what if there were an emergency or she needed backup for some reason?! Once I got over my shock at the whole thing, I had a good laugh with my mom on the phone because HOW ON EARTH did she ever survive as a military spouse, with my dad gone so often, raising two young children for so many years WITHOUT AN AU PAIR?! And, oh yeah, she worked part-time once we were each a year old and volunteered as a Cub and Girl Scout leader, made costumes for my plays, and made certain at least one parent (preferably both) was present for all of my brother's games and my performances. (My poor dad trying to figure out Shakespeare and, even harder, my modern dance choreography that I was SO proud of... 🤣) She paid a teenager across the street to watch me as a baby while she got my brother off to school. Otherwise in my memory, we didn't have many paid sitters. Just fellow parents helping each other out or my brother watching me. I just don't get these people's priorities. Both my parents would've LOVED having more time to spend with us, especially my dad. No, you don't need to and probably shouldn't spend every moment with your kids, but "can't handle the kids alone"? Why did you think it was a good idea to have them then? I dunno. I probably shouldn't judge, but it's REALLY hard, especially when they were basically saying the way I grew up was unacceptable or something. I had plenty of down-to-earth rich clients though. It's just that it's much easier to get away with being entitled when you have a lot of money.
@digifreak902 ай бұрын
I heard a saying once that was "being rich doesn't make you a terrible person, it makes you more you." Which basically meant, if you become rich, you able to do things you couldn't do otherwise, but wanted to. If a good, well-mannered, charitable person becomes rich, they'll generally become *more* charitable, because they can afford to give more. But if a ill-mannered, selfish, entitled person becomes rich, they'll become even more entitled because they'll feel that having that money makes them "better* than people that aren't as well-off.

I'm glad people are starting to realize this. It's a dangerous mindset to act like it's money that "corrupts" people when it's actually corrupt people that seek out having so much money. The reason why there are so many horrible rich people is pretty easy to see, it's almost impossible to be that rich unless you are willing to stomp on everyone around you to get there and are willing to have no real morals. And likely a good person that gets that rich won't stay that rich because they are more interested in helping others than hoarding more and more wealth. And then obviously when cluster b sociopaths have children they raise them with zero real love and the kids most likely end up just like them and continue the cycle of rich a*holes.

Most often elderly people. We live in a conservative state. But ffs. What is wrong with people. They'll give up good care simply over the color of someone's skin. The way the patients wife treated you like the housekeeper instead of the medical professional you are is appalling and degrading. And then referred to you as an "immigrant," as if that's a slur. I have no problem helping a patient out in need, but there is a level of respect that should be implied. These people could afford the extra help if needed.. But they were more than happy to let me and my siblings just come to the house and hang out, watch tv, play with the dogs and to help ourselves to the fridge. Which I usually brought my own food. But the fact they let us feel at home there while they were at work, reminds me of how kind and generous they were. As I got older and graduated, I remember painting their rent houses and their son's house. Those times it was mainly me and mom, my siblings were in school. But it was so fun! We loved our nanny, Mary! She got a new car every two years, as did our egg donour. I’m 53 now but still recall all the wonderful memories with her. When my parents divorced, I was 8, she got to keep her brand new car (completely paid off) and my dad paid her a year’s salary plus paid for a year of housing even though she lived with her parents still. Mary always stayed with us when my dad had to be away, he got full custody of us in the 70’s. That’s how bad the egg donour was! The cook made meals for her entire family on Fridays to bring home and during the week she’d take a meal home. My dad refused to make her live in our house. The cook taught all 3 of us kids how to cook meals and the maid taught us how to clean. She even taught me how to tie my shoes, I loved Carol too! She was funny. We come from generational wealth, the 1700’s. Few people know how many zeros are in my Trust and the Family Trust. We all had to get jobs once we turned 16, got old work trucks from my dad’s company and made our own money. Money doesn’t buy happiness or peace. Purchasing your own vehicle on your own is so rewarding. Purchasing your own home on your own is even more rewarding. Dad did a phenomenal job teaching us the value of working hard and that money is not what makes your life better or define you.

I've met a lot of really rich people in my life (well connected friends), I've found the older the money, the less stuck up they are. I went to an evening BBQ at a massive horse farm in Kentucky with the most incredible mansion. Our host came around and introduced himself to every guest, remembered names and was brilliant at cocktail chat. Came across as a genuinely sweet, gracious southern gentleman, His family was multi-generational wealthy and made huge donations to charity. Twenty-five years later, I still emulate his formal mannerisms when meeting strangers. Its served me well.

@@cheeling794 Okay, a little long here. When you meet someone, shake hands, and repeat their name - "Nice to meet you (name). You have a better chance of remembering. Smile brightly and look them in the eye when you shake hands. Look people in the eye when they speak to you. Actually listen, Practice polite small talk with friends (no religion/politics/or anything that might be taken the wrong way). My go to icebreaker is cooking - comment on the delightful menu/canapes or cocktails. Make sure it's positive - criticism tends to get back to the host. Everyone eats and I've found food and travel - even local gems you may know about - are the most engaging topics for pretty much everyone. Everyone has their own fun memories. Watch your manners. Please, thank you, yes ma'am, no ma'am especially for your elders goes a long way. Dress appropriately. If you're a man, collared shirt. Always. Polo shirt for a BBQ is perfect. If you're at a dinner or in a restaurant, don't even touch your fork until everyone at the table has been served. For women, nothing too short or too revealing. Stick with natural fabrics like cotton or linen if you can. You don't see wealthy people wearing rayon very often. Definitely wear flat sandals if it's garden party or BBQ. Heels poke holes in the lawn, cause you to trip and will ruin your shoes. Smile and look like you're having a great time, even if you're a bit bored. That's how you get invited back. And whatever you do - don't get drunk. Even if other people are. Get a mocktail every other drink; club soda and lime looks just like a gin and tonic.

@@hashtagmate for the cooking techniques, you can learn a lot on KZbin. I would recommend seeing a nutritionist with all of the reading materials you have from your physician. That way they can help you establish a base meal plan you can follow. As your skills grow, you will be able create more dishes for yourself within the parameters of your dietary needs. I’m sorry you’re having such a time. That’s one of the reasons I went into this specialty… I love food, and I believe everyone deserves a good meal. However, not everyone’s bodies are capable of digesting specific foods, and then the simple act of eating is a source of stress and discomfort for them. I don’t like that. I want everyone to enjoy good foods, because everyone deserves to enjoy good meals. Hang in there, hun. 💝
@JustHereForCats2 ай бұрын
@@LittleRayofSunshine69750 I pray you find that too! I can’t imagine how stressful it is to need to eat, but have a hard time digesting everything. It sounds like a lot, and I value the fact that I have the skills to help others through that challenge. If you can afford a nutritionist, I would get a meal plan for 4-6 weeks from them… then look up cooking techniques so you can use those to enhance your meal plans. You’ve got this! 💝

I know a lot of extremely wealthy people through working for a charity. Many were so nice and did physical labor setting up the events and never talked down to the couple paid staff and never talked down to regular working people that could only volunteer their time. Only a few that donated money and attended the pre-opening gala were ever rude or bossy to anyone. There was a mixture of came from old money and worked hard and accumulated new money. I've come to the conclusion that money only emphasises the personality of whether a person is a good, down to earth person or a rude, obnoxious person. It doesn't matter how they achieved their riches.

My dad is a millionaire and I got a small apartment paid in college + 500 bucks/month for groceries + uni bills so enough to survive in my Country but also not enough where I wouldn't have to work part time to buy nice things. @leonorapaust63692 ай бұрын
My situation is quite different, my parents weren't well off at all for many years. Through luck and very specific circumstances though, I ended up with a veryyyyy affordable living situation when I got my first full time job, which allowed me to save lots of money for my Masters in a different country. Now my parents, who are finally doing better in life, pay more than half my bills and I pay the rest with my savings, so that I can focus on my studies instead of work. I wouldn't say our lives were always cushy, but I'd be a moron to not see how privileged I am now. But I try to be honest with friends, because I actually like inviting them to food and drinks or covering them. If I weren't honest, they would feel bad about accepting my gestures or not being able to return them, and I don't want that.

She is amazing and we treat her with respect. She can use our kitchen all she wants, she can eat wherever she wants. One time her daughter had to come with her to work and I let her know her daughter could hang out with my kids and she was more than welcome to the snacks. She mentioned her last employer had her daughter sit for her whole shift in the kitchen and not touch anything. I remember being the kid who tagged along during a shift. I was a live in CNA & worked for a very wealthy lady for years. I lived in the entire bottom section of her beachhouse with my kid and took care of her for 5 years until she passed away. She was a mean old lady that cussed ,hit ,kicked everyone out but me So we got along but it was the best job I ever had . I loved caring for her. I got to live in a beachhouse rent free for 6 yrs & the family paid me very generously. I had to be there 24/7 bcuz she was 98 when I moved in & had dementia. She made it to 102! I was even asked to stay until the house sold for a year rent free after she passed away just because they did not want the house to sit empty. I was paid extra to hire extra girls for whenever I wanted, then they paid those girls too so I always had help. The only issue was she hated everyone but me so it was hard to keep help. I went through 13 girls in those 5yrs. And no agency would help as they were basically barred from receiving help . The lady had dementia it takes a special person to deal with that & not to take things personal. The daughter who paid me was the sweetest stoner rich lady herself. The house sold for 2 million when I left.

My grandma had dementia up until she passed away. She acted the same way as your patient did, but she never was like that before she got dementia. It's a horrible disease, but know that it was the dementia that was making her act that way. My grandma would ask the same question over again and get mad at you when you didn't answer her back. It made her really mean, but I know that she was only acting that way because of the disease. I read that having a stroke as well as having hearing loss can lead to dementia. My mom had a stroke last October and she is doing a lot better now. She still struggles with finding her words but she is still able to drive her car. She had very minimal brain damage thankfully. She was able to talk the second day she was in the hospital. When she was admitted, she couldn't move or talk.

So many families cant bear it which is why I always came in to do their hospice care. My lady used to see and talk to her son that died and ask me if I saw him too and I just changed the subject. They spend alot of time being very confused which makes one very frustrated and mad so they tend to act very out of character. I had dementia patients that were very sweet and never acted like that but I've had a few that were very combative. I just like to be as kind as I can be to them because I loved caring for them all. It really was an honor to take care of so many that needed it and I hope I can go back to it someday but I retired for now due to my own health. Thank God your Mom is doing well. Out of her two previous failed marriages he's the one that was most loyal and faithful to her. Did my mom fell in love with my dad? Nope. She just wanted stability and security that this third marriage would last until her last breath and it did.

I made sure our nanny's and housekeeper always had their own living space so they could close (and lock) the door and hang out. My kids always knew that after 6pm and before 7:30am they weren't allowed to go into nanny's space. Our staff always wrote down on the shopping list what they wanted. As long as it wasn't outrageous, they could pretty much put whatever they wanted on there. Thank you Charlotte! My kids & I live in the Big Bend in Florida, & just took direct hit from Cat 4 Helene, as it made landfall. Miracle we survived. Our property is unrecognizable, bc not only did the hurricane batter us, but a tornado spawned on our property, & gave us a huge nut kick, in addition to the throat punch. So much carnage. We’ve been hit directly by 3 hurricanes & 2 tornadoes on our property, in the last 13 months. It’s SO hard to stay positive right now, having no clue how we will get through cleanup here, but so thankful my family is alive, after approximately 15,000 pound tree hit corner of our house/ roof. Came to KZbin, looking for something to make me smile & lift my spirits, & found your beautiful face on this new video. I so appreciate watching your vids, even if it’s just a brief, uplifting distraction- thank you💞

I grew up and went to school with a lot of kids from really wealthy parents. Although I never came further than the playing room or kitchen almost as big as my appartment, I knew that all mom's cooked themselves and most also helped with the cleaning. Only when they worked themselves they had a nanny I only know 1 family who did not. They were of noble birth and had a butler, people who cleaned the house and cooked, had a chauffeur, gardener etc and lived on an estate.

I don't care about your race, your social status or how much money you have if you're abusive, inconsiderate and unkind. If you got more money than most but you're hoarding it and treating poor people or "the help" like trash - YOU are the TRASH not them! You can be the hottest guy on the planet (looks wise) but that doesn't matter to me if "inside" you're the equivalent of the black sludge that covers a smoker's lungs... 🤮

I had a ‘friend’ whose mother & grandmother were hit by a train when she was not even a year old.💔 The day she turned 18, she had access to over $500k. She built a house with her boyfriend at the time, bought them both vehicles, and then he dumped her before they even moved in. I was there for her through everything and currently had my own apartment and a toddler. She didn’t want to be alone in her 4 bed/2bath house in the country and begged us to stay with her. She set up a room for us and said she didn’t want anything in return. No rent. Nothing towards bills. She started paying ME to drive her wherever she wanted to go. If she wanted to go out to eat, she paid for us. If she wanted me to take her through a drive-thru to grab a soda & smokes, she bought mine, too. I never once asked her to do any of that stuff for me. It got to where I wasn’t working a regular job anymore because she wanted me to be available whenever she wanted to do something. Plus, she was providing EVERYTHING I & my child needed, while also putting $$ in my pocket. This continued for almost 2 years, before she decided to completely switch up on me one night over a dude. I hadn’t been able to go out to the club for a long while because my baby daddy was/is a pos. He finally decided to keep our baby for the week, and we went out. At an after party, I had met a very good looking man who was receptive to my attraction. We had been dancing and then sat down on the couch; holding hands & chatting with a group of people. My “friend” lost her damn mind! She asked him why he was interested in me instead of her. Never had she expressed interest to either of us, though. It was so random, but she was drunk. Had she stopped there, I would still chalk it up to being drunk. However, she proceeded with, “wouldn’t you rather be with someone who has half a million dollars & a brand new house than a single mom on welfare?” 🤬 She did not get the reaction she wanted, but the one she deserved. Every person sitting within earshot came to my defense and basically said she may be rich, but she’s also a b!tch. I was her transportation for the night, and we had brought my car. Those who were aware of that said they would leave her halfway home and cut ties. I took part of that advice and cut ties, after taking her home & getting my stuff.

I have so much more respect for someone who's like "Yeah, I do have a trust fund. I am priviledged. Things were more comfortable for me than others. I didn't have the same struggles." Especially when they are generous and maintain respect for others. Priviledge isn't inherently bad; it's all about how you use it. Someone who won't even admit to having it isn't going to use it to help anyone but themself.

"Eat the rich" isn't about rich people being assholes, it's about the system that enables their hoarding of wealth using exploitative labor practices. It's about a billionaire not paying himself a taxable salary and leveraging unrealized gains to hoard even more assets. It's not about whether they are kind or not, it's not even about them, not really, it's about the system and its loopholes designed to keep us poor and desperate, beholden to the corpos that lobby against anything changing. "not all rich" please, please I am begging you to stop qualifying statements with "not all" because we know, everyone that's aged enough to develop nuance knows. It doesn't need to be said, but especially "not all rich people" omg. I have my head in my hands.

Nailed it. Hate the game, not the player. Among other factors, changes to the tax code over the past 4 decades, combined with the Citizens United ruling, play an essential role in the ever-increasing wealth gap. "On Jan. 21, 2010, in the case Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (FEC), the Court ruled to strike down a prohibition on corporate independent expenditures, which has since enabled corporations and other outside groups to engage in unlimited amounts of campaign spending. [...] Campaign spending by corporations and other outside groups increased by nearly 900% between 2008 and 2016. In 2020, total election spending was $14.4 billion, up from $5.7 billion in 2018" (Georgia Lyon, Campaign Legal Center, Jan. 15 2024). I'm sure most of that campaign money went to candidates who have the best interests of the average citizen in mind, not those whose policies are favorable to corporations and their shareholders. /s Depending on the context, it can be important to qualify some claims/opinions with words like "some", "many", "most", etc. because while "most" rational people can extrapolate that there are exceptions, others are unable to differentiate a generalization from a universal fact. That can feed into pigeon-holing and stereotyping in lieu of seeing everyone as an individual, evaluating them on their personal merits or lack thereof. It also leaves the door open for a claim to be disputed or invalidated by the existence of counterexamples. Though, realistically, trying to have a civil discussion/debate on SM is about as productive as talking to a potato so I guess it doesn't really matter.
