Charmander Line Solo Challenge - Pokémon FireRed

Challenge Rules:
- I can only use my starter in battle.
- No items in trainer battles except held items.
- No glitches, exploits, or RNG manipulations.
First playthrough:
- No Double Team, Substitute until level 100
- 31 IVs across the board
- Cheating for information is acceptable as a last resort
Second Playthrough:
- All bets are off. Complete the game as fast as possible
- Max 31 IVs unless pursuing Hidden Power
- The option of a single egg move
- I will be playing these runs at 4x game speed
My footage will be edited to give what I consider a better viewing experience. This includes making cuts, fades, and adjusting the speed of the footage to match my commentary.
I use a software called "PKHeX" to edit my starter, setting things like it's Nature, and IVs to be perfect 31s, or marginally reduced to give specific Hidden Power typing to optimize strategy. All of the Pokémon I use are 100% attainable in the base game. The software allows me to create my "perfect" egg Pokémon in a much shorter timeframe.
PKHeX also allows me to set my Pokédex total to max after the Round 1 Elite 4. A requirement of Round 2 is catching 60 species and I am only interested in the potential of the Pokémon that I'm running instead of my ability to catch Pokémon optimally.

Great video and the 2nd run really blew my mind off, nice work of using belly drum, bellyzard ftw. Now we know why so many protagonists love charizard as their ace in the anime. Looking fwd to future belly drum users run through the game. :) Also the first run going -spd nature for brock it seems so much like a gigabrain move to exploit his AI XD.

I absolutely loved roasting through this game with Charizard. I wouldn't blame anyone for choosing Charizard, especially if they can get the drummin' type. It was totally a big brain play! Being at 23 speed compared to Onix's 24? That wasn't a happy mistake at all :)

Charizard was amazing 😍,belly drum was obliterating Kanto, unlike the first playthrough, in which sword dance was only available in round 2. Having a barve nature,was really helpful for belly drum😮, especially after some carefully planing the entire thing. If Charizard wad that great, I wonder how Blastoise will do.😮

Charizard still did incredibly well in the first playthrough, barring those couple of spots that were tricky. Belly Drum rooooocked! I loved playing that second run :D Unfortunately, Blastoise doesn't get a boosting move at all. It'll be relying on raw power, but STAB Surf has plenty of that :)

Always forget how strong Charizard is until I use it. Fire types are not loved by Kanto's elite four but Charizard still looks very strong here.

Eggsceptional knows about the homies with the domies. We dem boys. I never think to try and activate the starters ability for the boosted damage. They’re such good abilities if you know how to use them. Edit: you should look into holding exp share when grinding. In generation 2 it would double your exp. In generation three it’s not quite double but I am sure you gain more experience than you would without it.

Gotta represent the domies :) I was not aware of that mechanic with Exp. Share! I thought that it shows the XP multiple times, but the overall value remains the same. If I could justify starting the game with a Lucky Egg that'd sure be fun. Maybe I can get away with that on a Chansey run :D The Exp. Share in FR is gated behind 50 catches, so I COULD get it for free in Round 2, but in Round 1 I'd need to go catch 50 Pokémon.

I was asked about how I felt about Legends Z-A. I had to think about it, but because I haven't played much Pokémon at all beyond Gen 3 I didn't really understand the hype, but it's because I just haven't played the stories they're continuing. One thing I do know is that Mega Evolutions are AWESOME and I love them coming back. Stomping through the game with max power is my type of play :D Thank you!

No problem, my family loves Pokémon content and my nephew especially is interested in speed runs and solo runs I think part of it is I'm the only one who likes using normal types so I was the only who would raise and train up Pokémon such as Tauros, Snorlax, Clefable(before gen 6 when it became one of my favorite Fairy types) Zangoose, Slaking, Blissy, and every normal/flying Pokémon though I think Dodrio and Staraptor were the only ones I had normal moves on since Return on them hits like a truck but yeah growing up if someone needed a normal type for passing down egg moves I was usually the one everyone went to if they were too lazy to catch and level up the Pokémon themselves which started my services of providing eggs for others in exchange for Pokémon I didn't have, rare items like PP ups and sometimes Master Balls, and TMs before Gen 5 @@Eggsceptional

I loved Snorlax, but rarely use Kanga/Tauros because they were such a tedious task to catch :P I have a planned run in SoulSilver with Staraptor and I'm REALLY looking forward to STAB Return since you mentioned it. That's a really cool bartering system though! Did you have strategy guides so they could more effectively farming those items? Or was the grind real because we didn't know better as kids? Either way, it's amazing.

By the time I started my egg service I already found websites that had the info I needed so I didn't need physical strategy guides. Tauros I'll admit I got lucky with in Yellow since I caught it first try but I always liked Snorlax especially after gen 2 so when LeafGreen came out I would swap between the two in Link Battles@@Eggsceptional

Eggcellent sir, eggcellent, one of your best even. I'm not going to lie, I don't think I need to say much on it, you ran the 1st run roughly the way I thought you would, there are one or 2 choices I am curious of. going into Brock seemingly early. with Charmander I often train against wild Mankeys for the attack EV's ready for spamming metal claw against the rocks. leaving Misty later was a good call though. I also wonder about your choice of natures for both runs, quiet and brave, I'm surprised you didn't go Brave for both. you were mostly a physical attacker throughout both runs after all. leaving rock slide until the R2 and not going into it with brick break was interesting though, but I guess STAB aerial ace was a nicer option and earthquake at the end was a nice touch as well. the 2nd run, well we've talked about that and it went exactly as we thought it, you set up and either sweep or reset. nuff said. and it worked, what a time you set, I was surprised, thought there would be more resets by the way of the sheer mathematics of it being likely to happen more. overall though that was superb, Blastoise is going to have to work hard to beat that time, but you know what, I think it might, its bulk and typing and movepool is superb after all. but I shall wait for next week for that one. when the time comes for the Gen 4 runs, I think you'll love Charizard there even more, it has all those egg moves plus, a few extras. in Gen 4, using a Snorlax as the dad (that poor mama Charizard lol) you can have a Charmander with Belly Drum and CRUNCH. yes it gets to crunch and its physical in Gen 4 so its a belly drum boosted crunch. oh the fun you can have. plus thunder punch and fire punch are physical as well, imagine that set, plus all the other options you had in gen 3 thrown in. I have 3 Gen 4 Charizards, each with a different boosting move and a completely different set, you'll have such fun. good news, Special Nidoqueen is done. it swept the game right up until the R2. for that I needed to go full cheese and had a moveset of rain dance, blizzard, thunder and crunch and then lost rain dance for fire blast. I needed it, the special stat is decent but unless you go for a higher level or maxed special EV's its not up to handling the R2 with a standard special set of thunderbolt, ice beam, flame thrower and crunch or surf. I had a few resets of course, but I got through it ok. I am on physical queen now and its doing ok so far, I am doing my nugget bridge chores right now and will report back how it handles the rest of the run

Thank you! My thinking behind the Quiet was that I'd be needing Dragon Claw for Lance for sure, and relying otherwise on Flamethrower to solve a lot of problems. I knew that once I made it to R2 Atk wouldn't matter because we'd be buffed up with SD. I was admittedly very conservative with my move choices in this one. I didn't even teach Aerial Ace until the twilight hour because I wanted the flexibility that Charizard just didn't need. As far as fast Brock goes it's always a question of time for me right? What's fastest? Belly Drum was sooooooo good. I can't wait to play another drummer. I'm not convinced Blastoise has what it takes to claim the #1 spot. Belly Drum was way too strong. I think I know what egg move I want to go with for Blastyboy but I shan't reveal it yet. The options were much more limited than Chars. Ooph a Charizard with Belly Drum, Crunch, some physical Fire move like Fang? I don't know.. then probably another Rock move because it's so versatile. I cannot wait. Thunderpunch even? Oh yeah. Gen 4 everything has been calling to me lately. Good thing I'm working on that overlay/video intros right now :) I find myself wondering what's the faster way through with a special Nido? Higher accuracy lower power, or taking a few potential resets to be hitting harder? Physical Queen sounds fun too but there's something about those special sets. They just feel like the cover things better. I don't know if that's true or not. But Rock + Flying/Fighting/Normal over and over can feel a bit same-ish. Looking forward to more Nido updates!

@@Eggsceptional ok that makes sense, I am very glad the negative speed natures need not entirely ruin your plans for taking on Aerodactyl in either of the runs, that could of disastrous, fairly it wasn't perfect but it worked. and yeah the R2 of the 1st run and all of the 2nd run was pure physical. considering how much you are likely to heal throughout a run, going for bigger PP isn't always a must, Charizard had more than enough moves to cover that, never missing is really nice and should be taken advantage of as much as possible, if you get a chance to use shock wave or magical leaf or shadow punch, you take it because it takes so much luck out of each battle. Belly is so fun, there are a few on your list that will make good use of it. if you need another one as soon as possible, you could stay on the Gen 1 starter kick and use the starter from the manga which was Clefairy which we've talked about as a possible VS booster set calm mind vs belly drum, lets face it your 1st run would be special with calm mind and 2nd with belly drum egg move will be pure physical. and if you can resist using the moon stone long enough, clefairy gets meteor mash on its level up set, you'll love it. Blastoise will be interesting, you're building it up for us, I need to see it blast the game. ya see, I knew you'd like it, I think it gets fire fang via level up, I;d still go fire punch, but I am bias. Charizard will also have a good opening move along with belly drum or whatever boosting move you give it in the form of shadow claw, nice physical ghost move to replace shadow ball. the special set is also good, as we talked about in the chat, it does get solarbeam so a sunny day set will work nicely and you'll still have a dragon move in the form o dragon pulse. Gen 4 Charizard is epic, possibly more epic than Gen 3 I got lucky with the accuracy with that set with special queen, I cannot speak for how well it will go for you or anyone else. Queens special is not massive and is certainly less than Kings so having more power is a must. keeping crunch is a tricky option because after Agatha, it drops off and reverting to a set similar to kings with rain dance strats and ice beam or blizzard to finish the coverage. my physical queen got lucky with a decent HP rock so rock tomb is not needed and will work until rock slide, having HP flying would be better I admit for the sake of coverage but I cannot help that now but I think you'll be able to sort that out for your own run and find out how good it is

​ @jptheflipper3825 It's true, though when you're going through the leagues relying on low PP moves can be a bit tedious. Generally though, as long as you're frugal enough with your Elixirs/Ethers it isn't a problem, but you don't get multi shots at the E4 if you need to leave. One shotting everything with Belly Drum sure helps to conserve that PP :D Speaking of the glory of no miss, and shame of low PP moves, Sand Attack/Smokescreen/Double Team are especially nasty when you miss 4/5. That's true, but I think doing Clef like that makes the most sense in a VS style video. Special Clef VS Physical. Treble VS Bass if you will with the Belly Drums. Meteor Mash on a Clefable though, how much does that bring? Return/Shadow Ball/Belly Drum/either Brick Break or Sub feels a lot stronger. Don't get me wrong, I love Meteor Mash, but if we're going all out for speed and our Atk is maxed at the start of battle.. :P Without the egg move.. heck yeah! 45 isn't THAT bad to get to. For sure! I say it every time, but Gen 4 will be great to re-run in. Both sets sound amazing, but you know me. I'm leaning towards that boosting set because well.. fast with +4/+6 is pretty damn hard to beat. Belly Drum wouldn't work against Red though.. I'd need something to make Pikachu go away right away? Ahh now I just want to play it. That's fair enough getting lucky with the higher power set on Queen. Saving between E4 members though if you have yourself set up correctly it then just becomes a matter of when instead of if you'll win. I suppose the same could be said without saving but the resets are longer. HP Rock is just so good. I just looked it up and Queen get Aerial Ace but King does not. Who would've thunk eh? (from second comment) It's a shame that the special favoured Queen gets AA, but not King. Ahh it's a shame to not use Surf, but when it isn't on a Water mon I'd agree that Ice Beam would be a better use of the slot. It's so interesting for how similar King/Queen are how many differences there are. I do apologize about the Tuesday stream, I know there are quite a few people that look forward to them. I'm really trying to position myself so that kind of thing stops having to happen when things come up that are outside of the norm and require my time. It's true! As long as I'm honest with my cheaty shenanigans it seems that for a more fun/interesting strategy people seem lenient. After all, as long as it's still legal in Gen 3, I'm fine with it. Forget the logistics of moving it between games. It's true, but I wonder if there's another Pokémon capable of a no-miss set? Mayble a touch of leniency, no miss + 1 set up move/recovery move. I can't see anything but Smeargle but that's without any research at all. I doubt it in early Gens, but as the Generations progress I feel it's more likely. Ahhh yes, but Razor Leaf is all the way at level 42! I get that I can't get my stone until Celadon, but man! That feels hard :P I want that powerrrr. Plus in the second playthrough.. do you see what I see? SD and some method to deal with Ghosts is proven method. Probably HP by the league.. Probably Rock :D Blastoise has been an interesting one to put together. I hummed and hawed about the egg move quite a bit but I think I know what I'm going to be doing. I'm about to start the second playthrough so wish me luck! I agree though, it's a run where you're relying solely on Blastoise's raw power. And with STAB Surf there's plenty of that in Kanto.

​@@Eggsceptional I am very frugal with the PP restoring items, I collect all of them, including the few hidden leppa berries around the region and I tend to only use them at the R1 and R2, also, I tend to not leave the league once I am in there, I have plenty of rare candies by the time of the league and if I need levels between members I make use of them. after years of watching PokeTubers, I know very quickly when to rare candy instead of racking up the reset counter. there is a certain level of yolo strats with that method but it tends to work, most runs have 0 resets until the R1 at the least and usually none until the R2. thats fair with the physical vs special Clefable with calm mind vs belly drum, I had forgotten about that, it is still an option of course. I like meteor mash on Fable, I've done it before and it was all kinds of weird fun, it does have the capacity to boost attack on occassion after. I am tempted to do my own run with it now for giggles (after Queen of course). I'd be tempted to try belly drum, meteor mash, shadow ball and double edge, I rarely go for normal STAB, but when I do, I go big, i prefer coverage to sheer power after. go for it, once you are done with your Gen 5 run, have a go with Charizard in SS, should be fun. although you are right belly drum is too big a risk for Red, unless you get the best luck imaginable against the Pikachu of course and that will come down to a thunder miss or going for a KO with earthquake and hoping you can set up on what Red sends out after and that will be down the AI choosing something strong against Charizard. I can't believe that with aerial ace, that makes no sense, but again King gets confusion and amnesia for egg moves but Queen doesn't, I guess King would be too good with aerial ace to round off the set. at least I will have aerial for my physical queen, I can see a set of shadow ball, aerial ace earthquake and rock slide by the end of the run, but I might need to chop and change between HP rock and brick break in the R1 for the coverage. I can give you a good tip now, STAB earthquake against Tyranitar will do the same damage as a non STAB brick break, so I know I don't need it for the champion. as long as you are doing something that is within the realms of regular gameplay with your runs, I wouldn't call it cheating. trading a pokemon to another game shouldn't be considered cheaty as you need to do that to evolve a number of Pokemon, if you happen to use what is available in that game before you trade it back, like giving it a TM it wouldn't normally get until later or a move tutor move or anything along those lines, I'd call it ok. for example in Platinum, you can catch an onix before the 1st gym, I would not call it cheaty to trade to another copy of Platinum thats already been completed, give it a decent steel move like iron head from a move tutor and then trade it back holding a metal coat so its a Steelix before the 1st gym. in theory you could do the same in SS. other than Smeargle, I am not sure, there are a few Pokemon that get 2 never miss moves, mostly thanks to the shock wave TM, but in Gen 3 they are quite limited, in Gen 4, there are more and it is quite possible to go full physical or special with a select few, I will look into what would work best and get back to on that one, I;d till say smeargle is best thanks to its boosting capacity. it is true with Victreebel that the early game and some of the mid game is quite rough because of the lack of power, your best set will boil down to vine whip, acid, normal moves and a few status moves, having growth will help but a decent HP will be needed and this will be with weepingbel, once its a victreebel, you;re gonna be fine but its gonna be a long wait for that. I can imagine your 1st run was a learning experience with Blastoise but the 2nd will feel like nothing, blastoise is superb for solos after all, I hope you have fun with it and do it justice. it will be good practice for the Nidos, trust me. STAB surf is OP in kanto, add in a decent physical move or 2 and it perfect, there are few big bulky special defenders and they fall easily to earthquake or rock slide or whatever you want to use for coverage

I only ever really use them in the leagues and occasionally an Ether if my PP management wasn't fantastic and it saves me a trip to the center. I rarely grab the Leppas as I usually have enough to get me through, but some Leppa strats mixed with Giga Drain or something might be nifty. I could see Meteor Mash on Clefable being all kinds of fun. That almost opens things back up to a Clefairy starting solo run where I see if holding out on Mash is worth it in P1, or just going full special. Either way, Clef still feels like the best "phys vs spec" candidate. Double Edge is always tempting - 180 base power with STAB is insane. My only problem is that recoil damage. It can really stack up. So many runs to do in SS too... I was thinking more about Charizard VS Red and if I could manage to 1 shot Pikachu then set up against (presumably) Blastoise next setting up Rain Dance? That might be the way. Only one way to find out :D That's fair enough with the chop and change. As long as you have the TMs to support it I've found it to be quite nifty. Cheap, unlimited versions of Brick Break sure helps. How many TM10s do you typically end up with in your runs? Also with the Nidos... STAB Earthquake. I just had to say it. Love EQ. That's true, though I suppose it starts to tip toe on that line. You don't get the Metal Coat until the SS Anne in HGSS so without the assistance of another file you couldn't get Steelix that early. Buuuutttt that's also ignoring the fact that you need a second copy anyway for the trade. I agree though, as long as it's within the boundaries of "legal within the original parameters of the generation" then I'm fine with it. Ahh if only Mr.Mime got access to Swift. Mewtwo gets close with Swift/Aerial Ace/Shockwave, but that does still leave an open slot. Mewtwo > Smeargle, but Mewtwo has stronger options than the no-miss moves :P Fair enough with Victreebel. I forgot about getting Acid earlier so with Normal/Poison coverage and SD I could get through the majority of the game. It's a little clunky, but it'll work at least. Probably. Blastoise has been an interesting one. Without a great egg move option it was an interesting run to route as almost nothing changed from the first. Just smarter moves, better grinding, and HP. Those alone mad e a big enough difference mind you!

I prefer this to gym leader Matt. Nothing against him but he spends sooooo much time trying to justify his decisions he ends up boring you until he actually starts talking about the run again. My man here is simple and to the point like “I did it and it did/didnt work” and right back to the game play.

Thank you! I will never claim the be the best runner out there. I much more prefer the story telling elements of going through these runs. Sure with a bit of friendly competition against myself mixed it, but I will happily take any feedback that helps make me a better player :D Gym Leader Matt is awesome. Imagine doing these solo runs with only using STAB attacks......i feel like it would limit a fella to only using dual-type pokemon just for SOME coverage.

Any same type as base is allowed. so for example venusaur could still carry sleep powder and poison powder-- but not growth, sweet scent or swords dance. or your beloved substitute... I actually ran SS a while ago with a team of 3 Dual types and only used STAB...it was tough, i will admit. I ran a houndour, articuno and a gengar.

@@DoctorKamino That's a pretty wicked combo of STAB moves though. Given that I'm usually doing the solo format, I'm wondering how many runs would actually be possible using only STAB moves? Solo runs that is.

@@Eggsceptional I would think that any dual-type that has a good STAB move for each of it's types and at least one boosting move, or statusing of opponent move from one of it's types would be a candidate for victory. I think the player would have to VERY CAREFULLY pick their moves - and keep the PP of those moves in mind. I don't think I would try it with ANY Single type non-legendary pokemon. I am going to dare to say that MewTwo is so OP that he could win solo only on my rules.

@@Eggsceptional Im gonna throw a gift into this idea and say that since this run is so fucking hard, one can start the challenge with an OPTIMAL move set of any moves the pokemon CAN know from TM's,eggs or move tutors - level up moves still have to be waited for UNLESS those moves are ALSO a TM - So for example, LAPRAS could begin the run knowing SURF and ICE BEAM.
