Here is a description of my Alice pack Bug out Bag or 72 hour pack. I plan on buggin in, however you never know when you may have to leave your house for things such as wildfires, hazardous material spills, natural disasters or other man made disasters.
I am always changing and upgrading my pack, contents and setups. I have used the Alice pack for years as well as many other packs, I keep returning to the Alice pack as my pack of choice due to its versatality. I have slightly modified my pack to make it more comfortable by using the Molle II straps and hip belt. I have also added the Molle II Modular Sleep System Carrier for my sleeping gear.
I use this pack for other things as well such as for Civil Air Patrol extended missions, 2-5 day trips, and some overnight trips. Depending on what I will be doing is how I will load it out

Forgot to mention - I'd swap the toilet paper with paper towels; most paper towels are MUCH stronger when a little wet. Good kit, man.

You should add a sleeping mat. its not about comfort, it insulates the ground from sucking the heat out of you

Cool video. You should break down your MRE's to make your pack lighter. Also, you should add a mil spec trash bag liner (preferably 3 mil) as a cheap device to keep your stuff dried. I would also use biodegradable plant based baby wipes instead of the toilet paper. Multipurpose item.

What we did when I was in the army for both the ALICE and MOLLE rucksacks was put a wet weather bag inside as an additional liner to help with waterproofing. You should invest in those. Plus, if you're out kayaking or canoeing with it and it falls off your canoe/kayak somehow, it will float if you pack it right. We also put it over our heads to see if there were any holes. If there were any, you'd just use 100 MPH tape to fix that. I thought that was kinda dumb, but I suppose it worked.

My only thought is - consider the weight vs.utility trade-off of replacing your canteen with an old G.I. stainless steel version. Having had the experience of trying to thaw out a plastic canteen, I've made the switch for both of those I carry and won't be going back. I've also added a diy fish mouth spreader (a la Dave Canterbury) and detached the cap chain from the split ring so I could hook on a spring clip, making the canteen cap detachable so the canteen can be placed in or hung over a fire for boiling.

I would recommend using extream care when using the Colgate Wisps. If you're not careful, you can mess up your gums bad. I speak from experience. Wound up needing a gum graft as a result.

I haven't read all of the comments so this may have been covered. I would suggest a flat carpenter's pencil (Lowe's, Home Depot) in place of the pens which can dry out. They last a very long time. If needed, you could shave off a few curls for dry tinder.

I really like your system, and a great presentation! However, maybe i missed some things : optics and signaling? Like binocs, compass, signaling mirror, whistle? Pretty much all surplus stores sell them, they have been around since the Vietnam war era. You can find them for as cheap as $10 and they go up from there depending on the condition and if they have a frame. I would get one with the frame.

Looks good. I like seeing what others pack in theirs. I especially like that you keep everything in ziplock bags. Such a great idea and they add no weight and take up no space. Good logic. But watching you vid makes me think I've over-packed in areas I may not need to. For instance, I have 4 different knives, 2 compasses and a multi-tool. I would never get rid o f the multi-tool, but I do wonder how much I need it since my travel routes (mine bag is just for getting me home. I'm not bugging out) are cross-country and not in any areas where I'd need it. But I can't seem to leave it out of my pack. An idea I'd like to share with you is about your fishing setup. I have 4 of those Yo-yo fishing reels and all the accessories needed for fishing. It takes up about as much space and adds about as much weight as yours does, but I can fish in 4 different areas at a time and all while I'm doing something else. Just my .02.
@Skills2survive

Thanks for watching and commenting.. I agree with the knives. I usually have at least 2 and a multitool. I also agree with the fishing. Since this video was made, I have changed and added some things, to include some of the yoyo fishing reels. They are pretty cool pieces of kit and are worth it IMO. Thanks again.

Cool! I recently learned that those Yo-yo reels can also be used for snares if you need em. Pretty cool thing to know. Goes with the "2 is 1 and 1 is none" philosophy. Good luck out there, and I hope you never need that pack. ;)

Cool video. 32 pounds is pretty good. You could definately get it lower, but you'd lose some of your redundancy, or your comfort items (trowel, saw, tp, extra water bottles etc.) Losing the TP would be a bad idea I think.

yo yo reals are great for traps/snares or unattended fishing lines( see sigma 3 survival) . #4 picture wire or 18" 45lb tess fishing leaders are great for snares. i also noticed you seemed to be a lil light on tools( tomahawk or machete). and you might have over packed on food. and under packed on containers for water. good luck .

Hi Chris, Thank you for the in depth load out of your medium ALICE pack. Great idea putting your poncho on top of the pack under the straps, never thought of that. Now I can free up one of the 3 outside pouches. I also did the "Hellcat" mod to my medium ALICE. Like you said, I also keep going back to the medium, I have the large ALICE also but don't like how it hangs a mile off your back. I have large and medium MOLLE packs, also the CFP-90 which didn't seem as comfortable and too heavy. I want to make the medium ALICE work, mostly for a 72 hr Bugout Bag and also use it for 2-3 day backpacking trips. My question is, have you every used it carrying a small lightweight tent and sleeping pad /mat?? I personally don't like to camp under just a tarp and I hate hammocks. If you have used a tent and sleep pad, where would you put your sleeping pad and tent?? tent on top under the flap and the sleeping pad on top of the pack under the straps like where your poncho is? Any info would be greatly appreciated. I've been trying to find the best way (if it's possible) with this pack to make it all work out and be comfortable without weighing too much. My tent is about 3 lbs. I took your advice and got the TNH inflating sleep pad. I've got that sitting on the bottom inside the main compartment. Thanks.
@Skills2survive
@Skills2survive 6 жыл бұрын
Usually when I carry a tent, I strap it to the bottom of the pack. If you have the sleep carrier on there it's a little more difficult to attach and it rides lower. I have put one on top of the pack before as well. I carry a sleeping pad the TNH outdoors is the one I carry now. I used to carry a thermarest ridge rest pad. I'm not much of a hammock a camper either...lol. I have a few times, but it's not my thing. I would rather sleep under a tarp or in a tent.
