In my opinion, this is some of the best lyricism of her career. I cannot believe we are getting this and the 10 minute version of All Too Well in a span of 4 months? I think all of the 1989 Easter Eggs were ‘Red’ herrings because the bitch is clever like that. I cannot WAIT.

Came back to this song wondering how autobiographical this song actually was in light of the Tortured Poets Department. Was this one of the first hints of a breakdown before Midnights? We really could not fathom this 2 years ago.

People are upset about TTPD not being about the Joe breakup, but I have fathomed the reality is we had a lot of information along the way ever since the Lover era (even an entire album in Midnights). She's been telling us the whole time, but we were delulu and assumed they were happy only because they were still together.
@Eragon26796 ай бұрын
The first hint (hot take) was the uncertainty in "delicate", then songs on lover were also filled with it (lover itself, the archer, afterglow, cornelia street), then (if you accept that folkmore was inspired by her life, i think she said so back then, but some people seemed to think it was all fictional) on folklore/evermore (exile, hoax, love-triangle) there were the first signs of (temporary) break ups. Midnights is accepted as an "it's about to end" album since the release of you're losing me, i think(?).

I think this is definitely from Joe's POV and I think Taylor is the Renegade. For me, it links back to these songs: Mirrorball ("and when I break it's in a million pieces" = "if I would have known how many pieces/how sharp the pieces were") Getaway Car ("us traitors never win" = "you wouldn't be the first renegade to need somebody" bc traitor is a synonym for renegade. Maybe she was feeling like a traitor who didn't deserve someone and who would never win but Joe is like...you're allowed to need somebody too) Call it what you want ("starry eyes sparking up my darkest night" = "I tapped on your window on your darkest night")
@VanessaTS283 жыл бұрын
Also, maybe a bit of a reach but there's a bit of parallel with Afterglow as well! Renegade's "let your damage damage me" + "you fire off missiles cause you hate yourself but do you know you're demolishing me?" = Afterglow's "why'd I have to break what I love so much?" + "I lived like an island, punished you with silence, went off like sirens." Also very random but there is a siren sound in Renegade at 1:27. Is that a connection to Afterglow too?? Lol can you tell I am unwell and my brain is moving madly in all directions????
@nargesseyedin41323 жыл бұрын
Ok I love you thanks for all this:)) I heard the siren and I thought maybe in the second verse the words are the same but she is actually talking about another night that she tapped on his window and it was the night he committed suicide hence the siren sound!!

Also in Call it what you want - "My castle crumbled overnight" "Windows boarded up after the storm" Renegade - "If I would've known, how many pieces you had crumbled into""I tapped on your window" Call it what you want makes the most sense because it was the time Taylor felt like a wounded animal and she pushed Joe away, but Joe stayed.

i personally think this is joes perspective about his relationship with taylor. or what taylor imagined he thought about. it’s about how taylor had so much stress with being so famous and having so many things to live up to that she was in a difficult place in life, especially after the kanye stuff. he really loved her but needed her to get her life together first.
my interpretation of the song was that the singer is trying to enter into a relationship (either romantic or platonic) with someone who has severe mental health issues or trauma, which they use as an excuse not to get close to anyone so they won’t be hurt again. knowing that this person desperately needs help from someone else, the singer still manages to weasel their way into this person’s life because of their immense love for them. it’s an attempt to offer help that they won’t accept/don’t know how to: “i tapped on your window in your darkest night… there was no where for me to stay, but i stayed anyway.” this person often uses excuses to not be close to other people, citing the timing in their life as inappropriate and also blaming their mental health. it could be argued that the singer uses the pandemic as a rebuttal, as the past year+ have shown that life is too short to worry about timing, as it all could be taken from you in an instant: “are you really talk about timing in times like these?… is it really your anxiety that stops you from giving me everything, or do you just not want to?” but also the singer knows that being with this person is likely going to hurt them as well, because seeing their loved one in this constant state of fear/anxiety is just as emotionally damaging for them too. they use this as a motivator for the person to get better by asking them if they’re going to allow their trauma to affect the singer. if they don’t work on themselves to heal, the singer is letting them know that they’ll leave: “let all your damage damage me, carry your baggage up my street, and make me your future history.” in my opinion, the saddest line is “you’ve come a long way, open the blinds and let me see your face. you wouldn’t be the first renegade to need somebody.” not only is taylor using the window as a metaphor again, but it’s acknowledging the person’s experiences and how they’ve shaped who they’ve become. they’ve been through so much that it’s permanently affected how they see the world and other people. the word ‘renegade’ here is very interesting because i don’t think taylor is using here for the exact definition. i think it’s meant to be a metaphor for the person’s self-implemented exile. if a renegade is someone that goes against traditional societal norms, then this person preventing themselves from entering a relationship would fit that description - it’s not something that people would normally do. to me, that almost feels like an homage to champagne problems. the two songs aren’t connected, but deal with similar issues of how mental health can affect someone’s ability to form or stay in lasting relationships. but the singer is trying so hard to be there for this person but they make it very difficult due to these coping mechanisms. they’ve become self-hating, unable to see any good in themselves and their efforts at self-depreciation hurt the singer in return. it’s very hurtful to see someone treat themselves this way, and it’s damaging the singer to only be able to watch: “you fire off missiles cause you hate yourself, but do you know that you’re demolishing me?” i also love how taylor describes the trauma as broken glass. because what do you do with broken glass? you pick it up. but in doing so, you might end up cutting yourself, bleeding by trying to clean up this mess. by offering assistance and helping this person through their issues by picking up the pieces, the singer gets hurt too. had the singer been aware of how bad the situation was, it’s very possible that they wouldn’t have gotten involved at all because it would end up hurting them: “and if i would have known how sharp the pieces you had crumbled into, i might‘ve let them lay.” but after all of that, the singer decides to leave anyways. it’s been too much, they’re too tired, and they’ve become unable to help anymore. the moment they’re about to go, their loved one reaches out and shows some affection back, begging for the singer not to leave them: “and you squeeze my hand as i’m about to leave.” I AM SO SORRY FOR THIS RAMBLING!! this song made me feel a lot of things and i don’t think any of us were expecting this song to hit as hard as it did. if you read all of this then wowwww thank you!!! love the video and the reaction!!!!

Did you guys see the part where Taylor says “to need somebody” five times but in the third time she changes it to “I need somebody”? And then Bon Iver starts singing the chorus part like “let your damage damage me”, “carry your baggage up my street”, “get your shit together so I can love you”. Which I think really gives a shift in perspective there. I wasn't a fan back then, but look: if the public "narrative" at that point is "they are still together and happy" people who would say "oh, that song is about Joe" would be ripped apart for suggesting that. Also many people somehow took her folklore explanation ("fictionalized stories, inspired by my life") as those songs being 100% fictional. And since this song was also written with Aaron Dessner it just got put in the same category, so to say.

Best Swifties channel in my opinion! Love the reactions, the breakdown, the way you discuss stuff and EVERYTHING! THANK YOU. ^^ ... This song is a great one discussing how we sometimes bush people close to us away in fear of anything really that's only happening in our mind (most of the times). I think we are all guilty of that sometimes I'm guilty of doing it. And the reason in my opinion stems from the fact that if they knew they won't love is so they better not know. Or we don't love this about ourselves so we try to hide it. Or we don't like to reach to others to not seem weak and vulnerable. Sometimes this gets overwhelming and it hurt the people around us. And sometimes we are aware of that so we try to bush them and cut our ties with them so we don't hurt them. Or simply we are just unaware. And the world "renegade" could mean (English is not my first language) but for me it represents the idea of a rebellious person that person who doesn't like asking for help. And doesn't want to share anything with anyone because they doesn't feel like they need to. And there's no need to do that. Simply they likes to do through stuff alone. And if they enter a relationship this could hurt the other person in the relationship. Because they might feel neglected or it's not their place or it's not right. Maybe idk love seeing other people's thoughts on this amazing thoughts. I already love yours ^^

I was a huge Taylor fan from the beginning (saw her live front row and everything) but Red was the last album I really loved by her and when she released 1989 I was a bit of a dick about it cause I was a angsty teen and pop snob and was like "no I like country Taylor blah blah blah". Then in about 2018 I accepted that I liked around 2/3 songs from Lover but that was it and then when folklore and evermore dropped I was absolutely enveloped in her. Now I'm in the same position as you that I went all the way back to 1989 and then had all of Reputation and Lover to fall in love with and give them a real listen. My family absolutely cannot cope with me right now listening/watching TS around the clock (essentially having 6 albums to catch up on including the re-recordings). Live shows, collaborations, talk show performances. Cannot stop.

Bonny burping at 24:45 made my day 😂 I also read that “Renegade” could be from Joe’s perspective, meaning him meeting Taylor when she was not in a healthy place back in 2016.. and then your interpretation of the song hits even more

the wait is over haha. I really need your reaction to finalize a Taylor Swift song in my head.

I somehow knew back in 2021 when she said ‘talk about timing in times like these” with COVID and everything exactly to whom and what she was referring to…but I held denial like he should have held her 😭🩵 By the way this song is just 🤌

She can submit the re-records for Grammys “ A Recording Academy spokesperson says “Current eligibility guidelines would allow for the new performances and albums to be eligible if they were recorded within the last five years. However, none of the older songs would be eligible for songwriting awards.” From Billboard

Battle, sometimes known as Let's Go, is the only unreleased song I've heard to date, so if its not on RED TV, imma be upset.

I think 'how sharp the pieces' line means that whenever a person feels down or depressed, they tend to spew hate on others cause they hate themselves and that makes you take a step back

I think it’s so honest and raw to write about how hard it is to love someone struggling with their mental health. Because that person is struggling we think it’s selfish to talk about the toll it takes on those around them so we keep quiet but they’re really valid feelings nonetheless. It is hard to love people who make it hard to love them because they’re in pain. I love this song so much

There's 2 great things about TS releasing new songs/albums: 1st the song itself, 2nd your videos! I get as excited for the video reaction/breakdown as I get to hear new TS songs... Thank you for taking your time to educate us so well
